Regeneration of rural settlements by renewal, remodelation and conversion of public facilities in village centers
Апстракт
The transformation of the way of life and living space in the last two centuries in the centers of the villages
of Serbia, caused by many spontaneous and violent upheavals and changes in social behavior, does not
stop even today. It is sometimes radical, and is constantly charged with potential, which, if well articulated
and focused on real activities, based on the romanticism of the past and the imagination of the future, can
bring new human values to the living space.
The manuscript seeks to shed light on possible approaches and useful actions in the regeneration of rural
settlements, by renovating the existing construction fund - public facilities in the centers of Serbian villages.
This contributes to the consideration of a wide range of possibilities of access to heritage in rural or
suburban areas, i.e., possible desired outcomes and benefits of such action. In a long period, observing
from the genesis of rural centers to modern processes, through their diachronic devel...opment and
stagnation, a permanent oscillation and fluctuation in the quality of spatial manifestations is observed. Of
course, this phenomenon is the result of frequent changes in the concept of social conditioning, and the
context of the socio - economic - political environment. In the conditions of imminent extinction of
settlements, it is useful to actively respond to such processes, which, in addition to their regenerative role,
can bring new qualities to rural environments.
Among other examples of discontinuities in rural development, the manuscript refers to the mass
construction of cooperative homes after the Second World War, in rural areas of Serbia. This tendency
represented the first step in the imagined general socialist transformation of villages and settlements of rural
character in the peripheral zones of cities. As contents that were destined to carry social and cultural life,
cooperative homes, as a rule, occupied central positions in villages and suburbs.
By overcoming the ideals and value systems of the proclaimed and implemented social order in the
decades at the end of the 20th century, there was a change in the paradigm of the socialist model of
planning of rural settlements in Serbia (as well as in the surrounding area). With this abandonment of the
principles that had been valid for almost half a century until then, the possibility was opened, and it
happened, that the architectural and construction heritage of that epoch would be increasingly
neglected. The still solidly preserved architectural heritage from the socialist, but also earlier periods of
construction in the villages and urban areas of Serbia is, from the point of view of the modern context,
many times interesting for extensive research and protection and revitalization projects. Тhe manuscript
strives to reaffirm and revitalize the existing identity and ambient values in rural centers in Serbia, with the
aim of regenerating rural areas in every sense.
