abstract = "Cities are challenged by the process of globalization. The challenge is to re-create the urban landscape according to the identity paradigm. It focuses on the issues of becoming recognizable in the global network of pluralities. The question is: How to manage pluralities towards coherent identity? The paper assumes that urban design has the power to integrate different values into a new unity. This unity should be participative, consensual, and unique. In other words, the hypothesis is that urban design has greater potential to create a new identity than urban planning. The research aims to discuss the pros and cons of urban design in comparison to urban planning when thinking and acting on brownfield waterfronts. Expected results are the definition of principles for re-creating waterfront brownfields as well as developing cognition about brownfield characteristics and regeneration. Apart from theoretical and conceptual comparison, research will study a case of Belgrade’s waterfront regeneration called “Integrative urban design in Savamala regeneration”.",
