AB - The paper addresses the shift in architectural education regarding the need to develop new
approaches in teaching methodology, improve curricula, and make advancements in new learning
arenas and digital environments. The research is based on the assumption that online workshops
could offer a unique learning experience for students in higher education. Accordingly, workshops
are considered an essential element in teaching emergency design. As a result, this can produce
broader and more innovative solutions to COVID-19 challenges regarding social distancing, limited
movements, regulated use of public space, and suspended daily activities. The theoretical notions
of emergency design and education for sustainable design enabled the identification of research
perspectives and spatial levels to be taken as a starting point of the workshop “COVID-19 Challenges:
Architecture of Pandemic” that was conducted by the University of Belgrade—Faculty of Architecture
in April 2020. The critical review of the workshop’s procedural and substantial aspects led to
identifying four main COVID-19 design challenges perceived in performance, innovation, alteration,
and inclusion. Additionally, the paper’s findings concern the identification of learning potentials
and limitations arising from a current topic affecting global society, for which neither solutions nor
adequate answers in the field of architecture and urbanism have been found.

AB - After World War II, Military had great political and economic influence, power and land resources, while airports, as a military infrastructure, were considered as a valid asset for the bigger and, at the time, more important image of urbanization and modernization. This paper aims to explore potentials of underused military infrastructure perceived as a critical aspect of the image, quality of place and sustainability in the contemporary globalized world. The focus of the research is on the marginalized military airport in Kovin, city located in the Danube region, northeast part of Serbia. Having in mind that airports, no matter of their initial character (civil or military), demand substantial areas regarding land use it is especially important to explore the potential of former military airports that are not active anymore. As such former airports represent great spatial potential and need to be explored from various aspects. Focus of this research will be on former military airport in Kovin - Serbia, and authors will explore its potentials and restrictions for further development and influence on surrounding areas. Context of the research is on Serbia, country in transition and its military infrastructure that belonged to former Yugoslav National Army (YNA). During Yugoslav period military buildings and areas were strictly controlled and forbidden for civilians until the 1990s and breakup of Yugoslav state. As such airports are important property both to the state and army and to local municipalities in which they are located. Development opportunities, strengths and weaknesses possible solutions for the present problems will be analyzed through case study of student project, realized during 2017/18 school year, at the design course at the Master studies at University of Belgrade, Faculty of Architecture. The main assignment for the course was to develop spatial and functional model, while creating a landscape that establishes a connection between the overlooked military infrastructure and its possible civilian use in peacetime conditions. The results of this paper come in form of providing appropriate strategies and possible outputs for urban transformation of military infrastructure to secure high quality of living, promoting and enhancement of cultural and environmental values of the specific site.

Semiotics of architectural: detail between rationalisation and representation

AB - The aim of this paper is to discuss the realm of values upon which thoughts on architecture have been conceived, through the drawings of architectural detail. Although modernism, which opposes technical detail and ornament, is still regarded as influential theoretical position, it neglects to address a broader meaning of a detail in architecture. The research disputes the opposition between an ornament and a technical detail, claiming that a detail in architecture is the more abstract term, which represents a certain level of design throught besides utility and embellishment. It is argued that both modern and traditional values from different aspects of societal and cultural activities, as for their changes were being referenced to the micro level of architecture, transforming the way of their presence through different visual representations of detail along the history and theory of profession. In this paper, the small-scale drawing are used as a medium a medium which reflects transdisciplinarity of the profession and its entanglement with the knowledge and dynamics of other fields of human activity such as philosophy, economy, religion, engineering, and arts.

AB - Considering both the visual and narrative character of architectural discourse it is possible to examine the capacity of a drawing as an autonomous form, but also as one assigned to it throughout the course of creation of new architecture. This paper's intent is to examine the place and the role of the architectural drawing of the detail within design research. Thematically different, the narratives are instruments used for creating a relationship between the project as a whole and its parts, while the detail defines the path from an idea to the realization of architecture, that is, from abstraction to concretization within the above-mentioned process. The notion of scalar imagination has been introduced in order to indicate the relationship between the traditional modernist understanding of the roles of detail and scale have, while the question of the real size of designed architecture has been moved aside. The scalar imagination reveals the relationships between the elements of architecture, while its visibility reveals the architect's ability to build the necessary information network while moving throughout the diverse levels of those relationships. The goal is to avoid vagueness of architecture represented by the drawing and favor the polyvalence of its meaning by presenting concrete information. In that sense, for the benefit of achieving clarity within the methodological approach, we researched the conditions of visibility within the relationship between the drawing and its meaning. Therefore, this paper focuses on the scale as a direct connection between the drawing of the detail and the continuity of the idea of architecture.
