AB - An integrated building design requires the intensive early collaboration of architects with other disciplines in order to respond to sustainability requirements. Therefore, the education of architects should enable acquiring knowledge and skills essential to function effectively in an interdisciplinary team in practice. Integrating theoretical and practical knowledge within the course curriculum is one way to accomplish the above. Lecture-based courses in structural design within the Undergraduate Studies of Architecture at the University of Belgrade combine theoretical and practical knowledge within the traditional learning model by applying theoretical knowledge to individual non-contextual problem-solving. In the final year of the study, structural design learning is based on contextual problem-solving in teams in the studio, within which buildings and their structures are designed following sustainability requirements. This paper aims to present the applied approach of a combination of two models of learning, individual non-contextual and team contextual, and to assess, using surveys, the influence of applied learning method on the development of cognitive abilities, knowledge, skills, and motivation of architecture students, focusing the contribution of early project-based learning. A total of 230 final-year undergraduate architecture students participated in the survey. The analysis of the survey showed that the applied approach of early team contextual learning in the field of structural design contributes to the development of critical and creative thinking, understanding of the meaning of the subject matter, development of research and analysis, organizational, communication, independent learning and teamwork skills, and motivation to the acquisition of new knowledge and self-engagement. The above indicates the need for constant improvement of the architectural education methodologies and processes to respond to growing complex requirements in practice oriented towards sustainability.

AB - The advances and proliferation of digital technologies impact architectural practice asking for a revision of not only design production but also the education of future professionals. Using a case study from the University of Belgrade—Faculty of Architecture, this paper examines the efficient application of 3D printing as a design tool and opportunities for the implementation of this technology in architectural education. The research goal was to establish an educational framework for the studio course that was appropriate to local settings, starting with a review of educational approaches and the usage of 3D printing in architectural design. Starting with the premise that there is a bidirectional relationship between design and its tool, the educational framework for architectural design studio was proposed, tested in real educational settings, and evaluated. The results indicate that the use of 3D printing in studio course proved to be an effective tool for design exploration and presentation that supports (1) linking the logical way of thinking that requires parametric modeling with concept-based thinking; (2) change in mindset that occurs in the design process when students have a physical model in front of them to assess; and (3) improvement of deep understanding of spatial cognition among students as well as their competencies related to the use of the specific technology in the design process. The paper demonstrates how 3D printing technology improved educational methods, impacted students’ experiences in the design process, and elevated design exploration to previously unattainable levels of materiality, detail, complexity, accuracy, and aesthetics.

AB - This paper contributes to the research in the field of generative computational design of discrete assemblies and their implementations in constructing spatial structures in architecture. Works and research on discrete architecture and architectural ontology suggest that the considerable promise for a complex, open-ended, adaptable architecture could be a digital form of assembly based on parts. In this study, the topic of compositions made of discrete elements is researched from the perspective of the creative process. Respectively, the paper explores the possibility of using generative systems based on graph grammar formalism in the creation of adaptable spatial configurations in an architectural context. We tested this approach through design research in which a computational generative system was used as an embedded system for formal explorations. Starting from the specification of discrete elements/modules and their inherent attributes, then the definition of the composition rules and constraints, we applied the graph grammar formation procedure which, by a random selection of the modules and rules on each iteration of the additive process, generated a variety of complex spatial structures. The emergent discrete continuities exhibit new and unanticipated detail, materiality, structure, functionality, and aesthetics inherent to the design process augmented by human-machine interaction. The structural performance of these structures was evaluated using software based on the Finite Element Method (FEM), while the constructability was tested through the construction of small-scale prototypes. This theme enabled us to study specific design methodology, as well as to investigate the potential of digitally intelligent architecture.

AB - Sustainable building involves reducing negative environmental impacts with a simultaneous increase in life quality. The aim is to optimize building performances while considering all
aspects of sustainability: environmental, economic, and social. The building structure determines the
building’s performances, and it should be designed and evaluated as a subsystem of the building,
in line with the objectives of the system–building. This paper investigates structural design based
on integrated design objectives within the criterion of social benefits for users throughout the use
phase of the building, focusing on protection and safety, aspects of comfort, spatial organization,
spatial adaptability, and maintenance. The problem was studied using integrative literature review
methodology and system theory. The main findings of the research are a review and critical analysis
of the representative literature and the derived conceptual framework for structural design based on
the criterion of social benefits for building users, which should support more comprehensive and
more efficient decision-making during systemic design and optimization of buildings. The presented
integrated literature review indicates the need for the application of a systemic approach to structural
design in order to create sustainable buildings.

AB - The economic power of the population that migrates is below the level that allows the purchase of apartments in towns at market price. Cheaper illegally built residential buildings are most common form of resolving housing issue for this group of people, as evidenced by the fact that illegally built settlements in Belgrade cover as much as 40% of the area determined according to the General urban plan for housing. The Law on the legalization of illegally built facilities provides for the reduced criteria regarding the fulfilment of standards in the field of planning and spatial design. In this sense, it is possible to legalize the residential buildings that are not fully compliant with the Law on planning and construction, which envisages compliance with European standards, energy efficiency, accessibility, adequate quality of construction products and compliance with rules of construction. The above is not in line with the strategies for raising the level of sustainability of construction, which concern reduction of negative environmental impacts, with simultaneous increase of quality of life in the built environment. Having in mind the above, this paper analyzes possible deviation from standards foreseen by the Law on planning and construction in the process of legalization, as well as the consequences of applying this principle on the environment and quality of life of users of residential space. The paper points out the necessity of improvement of legal acts, that is, the process of legalization, which would also take into account the possibility of additional requirements for meeting the standards, especially regarding the aspects that can be improved with additional investments.

AB - This paper deals with the results of experimental determination of load-bearing capacity of structural timber connections realized by nail metal connector plates, in the function of nail to steel plate connection rigidity. In the first group of test samples, the nails are embedded in pre-drilled holes in the steel plate. In the second group, the nails are embedded in pre-drilled holes and then the head of nail is welded to steel plate by its circumference. The main originality of the study is reflected in the achievement of rigidity of the connection of nails and the sleet plate, that is, in provision of rotation resistance, which leads to the plastic hinge formation at the surface of the steel plate, and thus to the increase of connection ductility. The study showed to what extent the degree of nail-to-plate connection rigidity affects the load-bearing capacity of structural timber member connections. Experimental testing was conducted in accordance with the provisions of Eurocode 5.

AB - Raising the level of sustainability in construction refers to reduction of negative environmental
impact and resource consumption throughout the life cycle of built facilities, with a simultaneous
increase in life quality. Ferrocement is a material that is nowadays increasingly used
worldwide precisely because of the possibility to meet the numerous requirements which concern
the ecological quality of buildings. Having in mind functional and design possibilitieswhich
ferrocement offers as a constructive material, it is used for making of a wide range of structural
elements, as well as for the strengthening of the existing structures. In addition to the above,
ferrocement finds its application within the composite building structures. This paper analyzes
the forms of application of ferrocement within composite building structures, as well as the
benefits of its application in such systems in the context of sustainability. The analyzed systems
are based on the composite action of ferrocement and conventional reinforced concrete, the
composite action of ferrocement and steel load bearing elements, as well as on the composite
action of ferrocement, steel load bearing elements and conventional reinforced concrete. The
present analysis pointed to the key sustainability benefits of ferrocement application in composite
building structures, as well as to the need for further research on possible use forms of this
material within such systems, in function of raising the sustainability of the built environment.

AB - Integrated design represents a contemporary approach of conceiving and development of building projects. It is
defined as a design which results in buildings that successfully perform their function, in accordance with all aspects
of sustainability: social, economic and environmental. The key issues to be considered during the design are related
to the environmental protection, with special emphasis on harmful emissions, energy efficiency and materials and
waste, as well as to the social benefits for building users, with special emphasis on protection and safety, comfort,
spatial organization, space adaptability, maintenance and visual stimulation. This approach implies that different
disciplines are involved in the decision-making from the very beginning of design process, with the idea to respond
to the increasingly complex requirements. The paper discusses the innovative educational model, partially applied
within the studies of architecture at University of Belgrade, which should address this new reality. Whereas integrated
design requires system thinking and continuous interaction of all participants in the design process, research
strategies that cross the boundaries of individual disciplines are applied. The learning is based on the integration of
the theoretical knowledge in the field of architecture and engineering in function of problem-solving. It implies a holistic
view on the design, within which education, research and practice are integrated into a single process that encourages
critical thinking directed to multidisciplinary optimization of design solutions. The basic elements of the discussed
educational model are presented in this paper, as well as its potential and limitations.

AB - This paper demonstrates the results of experimental determination of load bearing capacity of structural timber member connections realized by WOLF
and LKVC metal connector plates. Considering the complexity of the connections realized by these modern mechanical fasteners, this paper deals only
with plate anchorage capacity (stress in the metal-wood contact). The aim of the conducted experimental study was to determine the metal connector plate
anchorage capacity in accordance with the provisions of Eurocode 5 and also to analyse the ratio of the load bearing capacities of these two types of
connectors in terms of their geometry. Experimental testing was conducted by loading of multiple samples up to the limit plate anchorage capacity.
Discussion of the test results included the analysis of the connection deformation for different levels of load, as well as the mode of reaching the limit
plate anchorage capacity. Review of the determined limit plate anchorage capacities, for the determined displacements of connection, was given in the
conclusion, together with the comment on test results.

roof structure. Due to the age of structure, action of long-term load, failure of
connections, etc. originally designed and realized system was compromised. This
resulted in the visible deformations of roof structure elements, which jeopardized the
load-bearing capacity, stability and usability of structure. Repair was carried out by steel
trusses, placed right next to the existing wooden structural elements, which allowed
adequate acceptance and transfer of load, and thus prevented further deformations of the
elements of roof structure.

Integrated design of structural systems

AB - This paper deals with the concept of integrated structural design, within an integrated
approach to the design and evaluation of buildings, for the purpose of achieving
ecological quality of buildings, in line with recommendations for sustainable building
development. Integrated structural design refers to reduction of negative
environmental impact and resource consumption, with a simultaneous increase in
life quality and health and safety in the built environment. Integrated structural design
is based on targeted integrated performances of a building throughout its life cycle.
This type of structural design is based on a systemic approach, in which the structure
of the building is seen as a functional unit, i.e., as a sub-system of the building, whose
behaviour is directed towards the aim of the system-building – ecological quality. In
this process, a structure cannot be understood, and thus evaluated, without
understanding its relationship with the specific function of architectural space. This
systematic approach in its practical operationalization has the design of systembuildings
of different relationships and connections among sub-systems, building
structure and construction materials, that is, the design of buildings of various
quantitative and qualitative properties, with a higher common property – ecological
quality.

AB - This paper demonstrates the results of experimental determination of load-bearing capacity of structural timber member glued finger-joint connection and analyses the possibility of application of this type of connection in timber trusses. Loadbearing capacity of connections, formed in this way, is determined on the multiple samples of timber members, with different dimensions of crosssection, loaded up to the ultimate limit state. The recommendations for further research in the subject area are given after the discussion of the test results.

AB - Trends of abandonment and degradation of rural areas in Serbia in the last ten years
reached the progression peak. There is a huge amount of rural territories with extreme
demographic changes which lead to very serious misbalances in economic and social life on
a local community level. Migration of rural inhabitants to urban centers lead to the completely
abandoned villages, villages with no children, inhabited by elderly people, with large percent
of one person families. The deeper and more integrated analysis of contextual change
processes is necessary in order to identify all significant drivers of these trends.

AB - Tensegrity type cable domes are three-dimensional structural configurations, prestressed inside the perimeter compression ring, in which the continuous tension throughout the roof structure is made by continuous tension cables and discontinuous compression struts. These kinds of structures can be formed like spatially triangulated networks or like networks nontriangulated in space. This paper examines some effects of network geometry on the behaviour and structural efficiency of tensegrity type cable domes. In this paper the roof cover is considered non-interactive with the supporting structure, unlike rigidly clad tensegrity type cable domes. Since the main bearing elements of tensegrity type cable domes are prestressed cables, they show non-linear load deformation and rely upon geometric stiffness. A geometrically non-linear analysis of non-triangulated and triangulated structures for different load conditions was conducted employing a computer program based on the perturbation theory. The incrementally-iterative procedure, with an approximation of the stiffness matrix by combining the elastic and geometric stiffness matrix, allows detection of structural instabilities.
