AB  - Belgrade is the only capital in the world at the confluence of two major international rivers navigable for global shipment—the Danube and the Sava River. However, it was only after the unification of all riversides within Yugoslavia in 1918 that Belgrade started to develop its riverfront; initially, as green recreation areas during the socialist era. Since the post-socialist transition, this trajectory has sharply changed in order to create new urban nodes along the riverfront. The best example is the newest project of the urban renewal of waterfront development at the Sava River, the “Belgrade Waterfront Project.” This mega-project has sparked a lot of attention. The aim of this research is to present, evaluate, and spatially determine this attention before and after the project inauguration. This observational study is conducted by using two methods from social discourse: a survey, as a traditional method, and analysis based on social network data (Twitter) as a newer, “smarter” one. Comparing and mapping their results, this research offers recommendations on how to harmonize and modernize the development of this crucial potential of Belgrade.

Smart Mapping Tools for the Balanced Planning of Open Public Spaces in the Tourist Town of Golubac, Serbia

AB  - Cultural tourism is becoming an important factor for local socio-economic perspective today. This is especially visible in smaller remote locations with rich cultural and natural heritage, where the other economic drivers are usually limited due to this remoteness. The proper example for this is the Iron Gates, where local heritage has been isolated by this longest gorge of the Danube. Nevertheless, the boom of cultural tourism has been noticed last years. The problem is that it is very concentrated in the main heritage sites, leaving the other parts without observable socio-economic benefits. Golubac Town at the western entrance of the gorge is such example. This is the only town in the Iron Gates with a historic urban core and the variety of open public space. Although magnificent Golubac Fortress is close and the Danube is the widest in its flow in the front of Golubac, local tourism is still underperforming.
This paper aspires to examine the prospects of Golubac Town to become a proper destination of cultural tourism by the comparison of two methods, both based on spatial networking through mapping. The first one is customised space syntax, oriented to the use of open public space by different users as a prerequisite to support the deconcentrated use of wider urban environment. The second method is newer and “smart” – it the mapping of the use of open public space extracted from social media (Tweeter, Instagram, and Flick) and it is more attached to visitors. Using these two methods on the case of Golubac the paper results in the recommendations how to improve traditional urban planning and design for the potential tourist destinations that face the high spatial imbalance of tourist visitors between their parts.

Using Sentiment Analysis of Twitter Data for Determining Popularity of City Locations

AB  - The paper considers mining and analyzing data generated by Twitter social network, regarding content classification, language determination and sentiment analysis of tweets. Analyzes are based on geospatial tweets collected in timespan of four months within region Vracar in Belgrade, Serbia. All of collected data is first being preprocessed, filtered and classified by given criteria, by using "Twitter search engine" (TSE) application, that has been upgraded in order to detect tweet language and execute sentiment analysis of the tweets written in English. This type of analysis can be used for determining popularity of city locations of interest and public spaces in general.

AB  - The ICT supported methodology for properly determine attractiveness of public spaces has
been an important tool in fields like urban planning, transport, marketing, business, migration
and tourism. The use of Twitter data is very interesting to make analysis of how people use
urban open spaces and what is the geographical pattern of their communications. Since the
Twitter is a massive platform for online communication within extremely diverse social groups,
with data generated by users of this network it is possible to research the spatiotemporal dynamics
of location and different aspects of users’ behaviour.
The paper concerns the study of user-generated twitter data that could support and improve the
understanding of spatial patterns for urban planning and (re)design of public spaces. The data
generated by Twitter social network are analysed, regarding temporal and spatial distribution,
content classification, language determination and sentiment analyses. The data based on
geo-referenced tweets collected in Belgrade, has been pre-processed, filtered and classified
by given criteria, by using “Twitter search engine” (TSE) web application based on Twitter
REST API.
