AB - The first decades of the 20th century were marked by a great rebellion against tradition, current
habits and aesthetics. This manifested itself in art through avant-garde movements throughout
Europe. Through their revolutionary concepts and tendencies, these movements sought to
change the overall social and cultural environment. At the same time, the character of the
historical context was such that it coincided with the revolutionary aspirations of the avantgarde
movements, and their art had a significant political engagement.
The ways in which members of these movements conceived their ideas and activities were
varied. The aim of this research is to examine different models of action of avant-garde
movements, their influences and effects on cultural and social transformation. This implies an
analysis of the methods and echoes in society that the activities of avant-garde artists had. The
research examines the effect of the utilitarian approach of constructivists and productivists,
pointless and meditative in suprematism, critical denial of the bourgeois epoch in dada, or
aggressive provocations in surrealism. Also interesting for the research is the influence of the
fierce fighting spirit of the German artistic left, as well as the activation of the nationalist
content in Italy.
Through research the goal is to acquire knowledge and reach conclusions about the potential to
significantly influence the wider social community and human consciousness through the visual
arts. The avant-garde is a suitable testing ground for research on this topic due to the large
number of diverse artistic practices that, with more or less success, have pursued the same goal
– a revolutionary transformation of culture and society. In addition, avant-garde art and ideas
were decades ahead of their time, and rethinking this phenomenon may be significant to us in
terms of comparison with today’s visual arts context.

AB - The aim of our study was to investigate whether the experience of objects’ implicit features would change if we
observe it as a real 3D object or as a photograph or a drawing. In our experiment 46 participants estimated their
impression of 10 objects shown in four different presentations. As stimuli, we used 3D objects, their virtual
reality models, photographs and drawings from four different viewing directions, created by architecture students.
As a measure of implicit features experience we used 12 bipolar adjectives grouped into four factors
(attractiveness, regularity, arousal, and calmness) and 3 adjectives forming aesthetic experience factor. Results
show significant differences between types of object presentations on four factors of implicit features experience,
but not on the aesthetic experience factor. Real 3D objects were experienced as more attractive and calm, while
VR presentation showed reduced arousal than other presentation types. On regularity VR and real 3D objects
were experienced as same and more regular then drawings and photographs.

AB - Belgrade is the only capital in the world at the confluence of two major international rivers navigable for global shipment—the Danube and the Sava River. However, it was only after the unification of all riversides within Yugoslavia in 1918 that Belgrade started to develop its riverfront; initially, as green recreation areas during the socialist era. Since the post-socialist transition, this trajectory has sharply changed in order to create new urban nodes along the riverfront. The best example is the newest project of the urban renewal of waterfront development at the Sava River, the “Belgrade Waterfront Project.” This mega-project has sparked a lot of attention. The aim of this research is to present, evaluate, and spatially determine this attention before and after the project inauguration. This observational study is conducted by using two methods from social discourse: a survey, as a traditional method, and analysis based on social network data (Twitter) as a newer, “smarter” one. Comparing and mapping their results, this research offers recommendations on how to harmonize and modernize the development of this crucial potential of Belgrade.

Architectural drawing in the process of visual research: The new school concept of the representation of space

AB - The viewpoint of architect Đorđe Petrović on drawing as a research process, driven by his work at the Faculty of
Architecture, University of Belgrade within the field of architectural drawing, is to be taken as a starting point for the
analysis of the process of visual representation of architectural space in this paper. The analysis is primarily focused on
the relevant period from the beginning of the seventies, when the concept of the New School was formed, and Petrović
introduced the concepts of visual research and visual communications to the curriculum, in his reassessment of the role
of architectural drawings as a purely technical and information resource. The basic methodological question concerns
the interpretation of the concept of visual research, conducted within the reformed curriculum, as well as its position
in the then socio-cultural context and in relation to the actual practice of the time and the period that preceded it.
Looking at the drawing as a powerful means of representations of space, the paper discusses architectural discourse
determined by architectural drawing as the product of social and theoretical practice, similar to the hypothesis of
Henri Lefebvre, presented in his work The Production of Space.

Utopian projects drawings as indicators of modern society needs

Kovač, Vladimir

(Ljubljana : Faculty of Architecture, 2015)

TY - CONF
AU - Kovač, Vladimir
PY - 2015
UR - https://raf.arh.bg.ac.rs/handle/123456789/665
AB - The paper explores architectural drawing as a medium of representation of utopian
visions, which aim to indicate needs and problems of modern society. Architectural
drawing has always been a powerful tool for reviewing and representing the space,
both material and mental – social space. Thus, drawings of utopian projects from
the sixties and seventies of the last century had followed and generated significant
social changes. Starting from that period until today, architectural drawing
remained the model of detection and conceptualization of the problems each
community faces and fights.
Unfortunately, modern cities are not the places that will provide a sustainable and
humanized tomorrow for us. In such environment, drawings of futuristic projects
and utopian visions are opening new topics and suggesting possible solutions.
Also, in this process, architectural drawing is recognized as a model of creating a
deflection from the recent social practices and anachronistic principles of urban
development and, therefore, it is opening the possibilities of new concepts and
alternatives. Hence, the aim of the paper relates to exploring and defining the
parameters of the social context that caused the production of utopian projects,
and thus established drawing as a medium of their presentation.
The study begins with an analysis of social conditions in the period of decades after
the Second World War, which brought specific and avant-garde utopian projects.
In those years, architectural drawing was recognized as a means of struggle
against the repressive principles of post-war modernism. Finally, the study focuses
on drawings of modern utopias and cities of tomorrow, and reviewing the
characteristics of the social context in which these utopias were created.
