AB - The subject of this paper is the elements of a timber lamella structure: the lamellae and their joints. The lamella structure is usually in a diamond pattern, so it relies on additional elements to achieve stability. The analysis of the elements precedes the design of a prototype of a timber lamella vault. The characteristic diamond pattern can be kept for the design of rigid or semi-rigid joints. The design of the joints is challenging, so this paper focused on the analysis and systematization of joints designed for timber lamella structures. The existing timber lamella joints were classified and analyzed based on five parameters: eccentricity, load capacity, the number of elements, easiness of assembly, and adaptability to the circular cylindrical surface, to systemize the existing joints and propose a new one. A design for a new joint was proposed based on the presented joints. The systematization and discussion gave a comparison of all joints, their advantages, and limitations. The conclusion was that the geometry of a circular cylinder and the type of elements for the prototype confirmed all the benefits of the historical lamella structures: uniformity of elements, easy assembly, and economical design.

AB - This paper presents the ideas of the neo-avant-garde architect and inventor Buckminster Fuller. Relying on observing the Universe and analysing microorganisms while using the available technology, Fuller experimented and designed new architectural structures. His ideas were based on the advantage of steel as a material which works best in tension, thus reducing its cross-section and the overall weight of a structure. A unique characteristic of Fuller’s opus is his utopian projects for flying structures and biospheres, with the idea of creating a new microclimate, which never fails to inspire architects and artists. Fuller’s utopian ideas should be reconsidered in the contemporary age, following innovations in materials and technologies. This paper questions the possibility of applying Fuller’s design methodology to contemporary structures, making them more lightweight, sustainable, and economical. The positioning of Buckminster Fuller’s utopian ideas in a contemporary frame also revises the effect on social changes created by this type of architecture. It is a fusion of visual art, inventive design model, mechanical activity, economy, and overall evolutionary strategy for a new society. Concluding remarks will open questions about the possibility of the realisation of utopian ideas for a better and sustainable world. Or is it all still a utopia?

AB - This paper presents timber lamella structures applied to the circular cylinder surface when
all lamellae axes intersect at the nodes. To achieve the uniformity of all elements in this structure,
the geometry of the structure must be carefully designed. The main methods for the research are
graphical and numerical methods for geometric design and a prototype construction for a specific
geometric pattern. The methods are discussed for their ease of replication, as well as the possibility of
reinterpretation on other surfaces, while the prototype design and construction give insight into the
process from design to execution. The combination of these methods allows for a thorough analysis of
the geometry for lamella structures. The analysis shows that geometrical design must begin from the
whole to the lamella, and that the number of element types in the structure depends on the disposition
of the elements and the angle of the pattern. The discussion shows the advantages and limitations of
the proposed methods, while the conclusions give the guidelines for the implementation of lamella
structures into new design projects.

AB - This paper presents a structural design methodology in order to find the best possible solution of protective structures for active archeological sites. Besides the typical demands for construction on these sites which arise from the typology and the level of protection of cultural heritage, active archeological sites require a structural solution with regard to time and direction of further excavation. The hypothesis is that modular spatial structures which are easily assembled or disassembled, and have the ability to be extended in one or more directions, are the most functional solution for these sites. This paper shows the analysis of several types of spatial structures based on the requirements of active archeological sites. It explores the possibilities of structural systems derived from multiplication of one primary element of structure, their material and joints between elements. The most adequate assembly of the entire structure is supposed to be found in the interdependency of the load and the dimension of the element’s cross- section, in a suitable geometric configuration. The focus of the analysis is on structures made of short-bearing elements which have the advantage of the efficiency of transport and assembling. One of the design criteria for this methodology is that the structural system itself looks simple and elegant in order to complement the archeological site. This is shown in the paper through the analysis of patterns in which these structures are assembled. The aim is to correlate the position of the elements in the structural system, the dimensions of cross-section, and the lengths of the straight beams which form the spatial structure in order to find a simple, functional and economical solution for protective structures at active archeological sites. The conclusion shows the advantages and disadvantages of the design methodology presented in the paper, as well as the discussion about the analyzed spatial structures. This type of methodology that systematizes various design criteria from different fields of research engages the problem of design of protective structures for archeological sites and opens up new questions for further research.

AB - The importance of masonry arch bridges as a traffic network element calls for a thorough
analysis focused on both structural stability and loading capacity of these historical structures, considering
the usage of these bridges in contemporary traffic conditions. This paper focuses on the analysis
of longitudinal cracks in a single span masonry arch bridge to evaluate its influence on structural
behaviour of the system. As longitudinal cracks do not necessarily present an inevitable collapse
mechanism, analysis of the causes is crucial for evaluating the serviceability and functionality of the
bridge investigated. The methodology is based on the following: literature review, observation of the
stone bridge in Ivanjica, geological testing of the site, geophysical testing of the bridge, laboratory
testing of mechanical characteristics of stone used for the bridge construction and biological analysis
of the samples of implemented materials on the bridge. Finite element analysis of the bridge was
conducted to define the causes of the longitudinal cracks. The 3D simulation model was based on
the data collected through observation and experimental analysis. This paper provides extensive
research on a single span masonry bridge, examining how different deterioration mechanisms, in
conjunction, can lead to the appearance of cracks in masonry arch bridges and provide remedial
measures accordingly.

multidisciplinary architectural projects through a workshop held at the University of Belgrade
- Faculty of Architecture. The participants of this workshop, from different backgrounds and
faculties, have been doing a research about the use of mechatronics in architecture. The
mechatronic system was analyzed on a physical model based on the project by the architectural
studio 4of7 Architecture for Slavija square in Belgrade. One of the aims of this workshop was to
show the user-object-environment relationship and to explore the advantages and disadvantages
of this kind of architectural design. The final product of this workshop is an interactive physical
model that can show the movement of architectural elements in real-time. This model can help
in the education about the use of mechatronics as a new design method in architecture. The
concluding argument would show the possibilities of mechatronics in architectural projects for
urban space and it will aim to place it on the map of design methodologies in architecture.

AB - Architecture represents the synthesis of form, function and construction. In the works of the architect Ivan Antić this can be read at the first view of the building. A master in designing movement through an object, Antić constantly developed the relationship between function and form, as well as between function and construction. A detailed analysis of his work, projects and drawings, gives insight to these relations, making them clear. The observer can see the architect's logic and simplicity in designing even the most complex buildings. The relationship between the design concept and the way the structure manifests itself in his projects will be presented in this paper. The logic behind the design of Pinki Cultural Sports Center, with emphasis on structure, as well as the relationship between the architect and the engineer can be seen throughout this paper.
