AB - The industrial heritage of the city of Belgrade is the focus of this research, which highlights
the possibilities of preserving industrial heritage from the perspective of a contemporary context
and sustainable development. Guided by theoretical principles on the preservation of cultural and
industrial heritage, their values, authenticity and spirit of place, as well as the idea of the necessity
of integrating industrial heritage into the contemporary context, this paper aims to examine the
possibilities for the preservation of industrial heritage following theoretically established principles,
with the introduction of new uses and sustainable solutions. The analysis of the case studies of
Belgrade’s industrial heritage presented in this paper results from research conducted by the teachers, associates and students of the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Architecture. The research focuses on the possibilities of translating the principles of preserving cultural and industrial heritage from their theoretical definition to practical application. The students’ conceptual solutions for protection, revitalisation and presentation of the analysed case studies represent the research results. An important aspect of this paper is defining the criteria for valorising students’ conceptual solutions, which are aligned with the principles of preserving cultural heritage and establishing sustainable development. The valorisation of students’ conceptual solutions through a defined set of criteria indicates real possibilities for the simultaneous preservation of all the values of industrial heritage and its transformation into a social, ecological and economic resource of the contemporary city.

AB - One of the main challenges in preserving built heritage in the 21st century relates to the possibilities of its revitalisation and adaptation following modern needs while protecting its values and authenticity. Protection of built heritage does not mean only the identification, affirmation and promotion of its urban-architectural and aesthetic values but also a set of cultural-historical values for which it is necessary to recognise built heritage through a multidisciplinary approach – within the broader social context. Therefore, the teaching process at the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Architecture aims to establish a unique multi-disciplinary approach to the industrial heritage's revitalisation and adaptation. This paper shows an industrial heritage research methodology systematic representation, applied to the case study of the Hangar of the Old Airport in New Belgrade as an important monument of industrial heritage and technical culture of the 20th century. Through student proposals for revitalisation and adaptation, the applied methodology, the approach for preservation, revitalisation and presentation of industrial heritage's values and the preservation of its authenticity, as well as a description of the use of industrial heritage's values, have been given; which ensured the continuity and survival of industrial heritage for future generations. A special contribution refers to the proposals for preserving the Hangar, which contributes to the teaching process improvement in the built heritage studies at the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Architecture.

AB - This paper presents the ideas of the neo-avant-garde architect and inventor Buckminster Fuller. Relying on observing the Universe and analysing microorganisms while using the available technology, Fuller experimented and designed new architectural structures. His ideas were based on the advantage of steel as a material which works best in tension, thus reducing its cross-section and the overall weight of a structure. A unique characteristic of Fuller’s opus is his utopian projects for flying structures and biospheres, with the idea of creating a new microclimate, which never fails to inspire architects and artists. Fuller’s utopian ideas should be reconsidered in the contemporary age, following innovations in materials and technologies. This paper questions the possibility of applying Fuller’s design methodology to contemporary structures, making them more lightweight, sustainable, and economical. The positioning of Buckminster Fuller’s utopian ideas in a contemporary frame also revises the effect on social changes created by this type of architecture. It is a fusion of visual art, inventive design model, mechanical activity, economy, and overall evolutionary strategy for a new society. Concluding remarks will open questions about the possibility of the realisation of utopian ideas for a better and sustainable world. Or is it all still a utopia?

AB - This paper presents research on the historical and urban development of the palace complex on Terazije during the 19th and early 20th centuries, placing a focus on the period from the 1840s to the 1880s, i.e. upon the architecture of the Prince’s Court (Knežev dvorac, also known as the Stari konak) and the Court of Crown Prince Mihailo, which were both demolished in the early 20th century. The process of urban transformation of the complex and the design of buildings for the accommodation of the then-rulers is presented, based on the available historical material (old plans and photographs), as well as pre-existing interpretations of this topic available in published literature. Both the appearance of the court buildings and the complex itself in certain phases of development are reconstructed, facilitated by comparative situational representations and axonometric projections. A typological and stylistic analysis of the architectural characteristics of the Stari konak and the court, which are to be considered representative examples of the transition from the Classicist to the Romantic era of Serbian architecture in the middle of the 19th century, is given. The paper places a particular emphasis on the historical and cultural significance in the present of these now-demolished buildings for preserving the memory of an extremely important period in the history of the modern Serbian state.

AB - This paper aims to explore industrial heritage of Belgrade that is located in the city center
and therefore, has considerable potential for future architectural and urban development of the
Serbian capital. The whole Belgrade riverfront area along the Sava and the Danube Rivers has a
large number of abandoned industrial buildings that have significant value and need to be preserved
and revitalized. This paper represents a research project conducted by lecturers at the Faculty of
Architecture in Belgrade in the course History and Theory 1—Visual Culture in Architectural Theory
and Practice. In order to provide productive research, we have employed the case study method based
on the old Mint “A.D.”, which we have chosen as a characteristic example of Belgrade’s industrial
heritage architecture. An important goal of this research is to provide professional information
and raise public awareness about the importance and potential of industrial heritage for the future
economic, cultural, social and tourist development of the city. This paper analyzes possibilities to
comprehend the problems of the city’s industrial heritage protection regarding its historical and
urban context, its genesis, authenticity, identity, cultural, architectural, economic, social, productive,
creative and environmental values. According to that, the main goal of this research is concentrated
on the sustainable preservation of specific cultural tangible and intangible values, spirit of the place,
city identity and historic cityscape values that characterize industrial heritage in the social, cultural,
natural and built environmental systems.

abstract = "This paper aims to explore industrial heritage of Belgrade that is located in the city center
and therefore, has considerable potential for future architectural and urban development of the
Serbian capital.
According to that, the main goal of this research is concentrated
on the sustainable preservation of specific cultural tangible and intangible values, spirit of the place,
city identity and historic cityscape values that characterize industrial heritage in the social, cultural,
natural and built environmental systems.",

The myth of form

AB - The myth of form contains an architectural paradox. Without form, there is no architecture. The hypothetical question of form vs. thanatos justifies the myth of form in architecture. The autonomy project of architecture is a myth that has its different fields: cognitive, practical, and, ultimately, subjective. The subjective is inseparable from the field of architecture, both in terms of creation and perception. If there is no form in architecture, architecture disappears as a field. A formal approach to architecture uses proportional analysis to find repetitiveness in intensity. The tip of the iceberg is the autonomy of architecture. In architecture, the formal has its own strict rules; by contrast, avant-garde practices questioned the rules. The following text aims to observe the city in its totality through the cracks of the narrative myth of form.

AB - Marking the 100th anniversary of the founding of Bauhaus, one
of the leading and most in uential modernist art schools, which,
despite its short period of activity (1919-1933), paved the way
for the new artistic, theoretical and social toponyms through its
educational system, this text collects and exposes the specic
and complex echoes created by designers, artists and architects
from the Yugoslav cultural areas. The subject of this paper is
related to a group of students from the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats
and Slovenians (from 1929, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia) who
studied architecture, textile design, photography and the ne
arts at the Bauhaus in the period 1924-1932. Education at the
Bauhaus, political context, as well as work in various prestigious
architectural bureaus or individual design practices were of
utmost importance in forming the ideological frameworks of
the Yugoslav Bauhaus students’ production. In other words,
the text seeks to illustrate the complex relationships between
the individual poetics of the Yugoslav students at the Bauhaus
and the historical moment in which they acted. The aim of the
research is to determine the cultural and social positions of their
work through relating the aesthetic reading of artistic practices,
concise review of the socio-historical context and individual
cases of Yugoslav students. The research methodology is
framed by the existing sources and interpretations.

Architecture as a textual phenomenon: Alexander Brodsky’s architectural practices of appropriation

AB - This paper analyses architecture created through appropriating existing materials while focusing on strategies of intertextuality. It argues that the meaning of an architectural object does not derive from itself, or its poetic concepts, but rather from its relationship with order architectural objects, other art works as texts, cultural texts, and every day practices. My aim is to show various theoretical problems of the theory of architecture and art, which is a network of overlapping texts of culture, surround the architectural production of Alexander Brodsky. Here I use different and varied theoretical concepts, selecting two case studies by Brodsky – The Pavilion for Vodka Ceremonies and Rotunda – upon which the paper is based as an interdiscursive study.
