AB - The subject of this investigation is two distinct projects in which a common critical method can be identified – recycling. The first project is the ‘Recycling Beauty’ exhibition, designed by Rem Koolhaas/OMA and curated by Salvatore Settis, Anna Anguissola, and Denise La Monica. It represents the third chapter in Fondazione Prada’s comprehensive study on the contemporaneity of ancient art, exploring the paradoxical and delicate relationship between fragments from the past and the cultural diversity of the contemporary world. On the other hand, this research encounters the latest design project arising from the enduring collaboration between Kosmos Architects and Château Chapiteau - the Tin Can Castle, known as the Château Chapiteau Refugee House. This paper primarily aims to investigate the recycling conceptions in two cases thoroughly and, afterwards, by employing the methodology of comparative analysis, examine their shared characteristics, differences, and specificities concerning contemporary architecture discourse.

AB - This study will examine the possibility of conducting architectural research through the temporal form of the montage technique – cinematic montage. The subject of this investigation is unquestionably a canonical topic of the architectural discipline – the window. Methodologically similar to an eight-part audio-visual essay by Jean-Luc Godard titled Histoire(s) du cinéma, this design-driven research will study in detail the architectural qualities of various windows within the cinematic space. As a final result, the experiment will present a short film sequence, which an extensive analytical diagram will follow. In this manner, the juxtapositions made in the film sequence through cinematic montage will be revisited and reconceptualised in the diagram space through the drawing process. By analysing the simultaneous design procedures in film sequence and diagram, this research aims to generate new knowledge within the architectural discipline.

AB - The main goal of this research project is to propose a new seeing of architectural montage which is strongly motivated by the framework of the newly formed field of study in research by design community - design-driven research. The reason for this research stems from the fact that in architectural historiography, in which montage first appeared in the late 1960s and early 1970s in the work of Italian historian and theoretician - Manfredo Tafuri, architectural montage has been mostly presented as a purely representational technique, neglecting its other potentials. With the recent development of the design-driven research framework, architectural montage has gained an extremely important new role in architectural discipline. Therefore, the main hypothesis of this research is that architectural montage is not exclusively a representational technique, rather it is a research tool that can produce knowledge within the architectural discipline.

Montage Driven Research Strategies: The Consolidation of Generative, Systematic and Analytical

Bulajić, Đorđe

AB - The relationship between design and research is a lively debate in our discipline. Ever since the first issue of the Journal of Architectural Education (JAE) from 1947, this complex but extremely significant relationship has been increasingly questioned. This debate is also hardly unique to architecture, as Groat and Wang underline: “Some of the very same discursive positions are found in many other creative or professional fields, including the visual arts, product design, business and consultancy, planning, landscape architecture, and urban design, among others.” However, even after a broad array of studies undertaken by various scholars, researchers and practitioners, we are repeatedly trying to explain and properly understand this intricate relation. I take the stand that architectural design and research are mutually complementary, hence there is no architectural research without design, and there is no architectural design without research. Nevertheless, this does not mean that every process of architectural design is a priori research, to the same degree as not every research within the architectural discipline can be considered as architectural design. The two activities are not equivalent, they are fundamentally distinct, but they embody many complementary and overlapping qualities. I believe this exciting relationship is a focal point of contemporary architectural research, and in a wider perspective, it will substantially affect the path in which our discipline is developing.
At the CA²RE / CA²RE+ DELFT: RECOMMENDATION conference, I presented a part of my research titled Composing Images: Architectural Montage as Design-Driven Research Tool. As the title suggests, this research project aims to thoroughly investigate the capacities of architectural montage in the design-driven research framework. The reason for this research derives from the fact that in architectural history and historiography, architectural montage has been mostly perceived as a purely representational technique, neglecting its other enormous potentials. However, with the development of the design-driven research framework, which focuses on the research strategies that are based on design procedures, montage potentially gained another, extremely important role. Therefore, the main hypothesis of the research is that architectural montage is not merely a representational technique, it is rather a research tool that is able to produce new meanings and new knowledge within the architectural discipline.
As a starting point of the research project, an artistic design-driven research experiment was conducted through seven interdisciplinary phases. All seven phases of this experiment, which all together form a research methodology, included design procedures that were done by hand. Moreover, the whole design-driven research process was uncertain, non-linear, highly intuitive and empirical in nature. It consisted of very distinct operations, from collecting different types of images and constructing the digital atlas of the research, to selecting and hand-colouring images with a brush and watercolours. However, the core element of this process was architectural montage. As montage was present in various forms in all seven phases of the research, it emerged as a comprehensive layer of the whole experiment. Montage was not only employed as a main compositional and logical principle in design procedures, rather the combination and juxtaposition of elements was also used to deliver answers in the same way as any classical analytical method would. Therefore, architectural montage was applied as both design and research technique in the creative process.
The implementation of design into research strategies brings architects back to the familiar territory. We are given a chance to use skills and abilities that we have finely developed through our architectural education and training. Design-driven research teaches us how to value design thinking and design methodology as research and represents the combination of intuition and science, as Kieran underlines: “Research brings science to our art [. . .]. To move the art of architecture forward, however, we need to supplement intuition with science.” As architectural montage is mainly a design technique, meaning it aims to “change existing situations into preferred ones,” this research showed how highly intuitive generative processes can consolidate with both analytical and systematic ones within the research undertaken in the architectural discipline.

AB - This research presents an attempt to revisit the dichotomous relationship between the urban and the rural, the city and the countryside or the space of production and the space of consumption. Major political and urban transformations of the last decade of the 20th century, along with various global crises, from climate to economic and housing, which are currently present, somehow improved the marginalized state of the countryside. Since then, we can identify a growing number of people migrating from urban to rural areas and therefore, a growing number of architects, urbanists, planners, geographers, theorists, philosophers, and others that are dealing with the concept of redefining the countryside.
What can we learn about a particular urban environment from its natural and rural surroundings? This research aims to challenge the common understanding of the urban environment, by proposing a new displaced view, a strategy of understanding the built environment through its peripheral nature and its surrounding rural sprawl. Furthermore, this research aims to emphasize and promote the impact of nature and natural surroundings on the urban environment. Instead of focusing on the built urban environment in order to understand the contemporary condition of built space, this research argues that defocusing the built and researching the perimeter instead can provide for substantial new knowledge about the urban context. Through acknowledging nature and the unbuilt, we tend to produce new knowledge about our built environments. By employing the NSA (Narrative Spatial Analytics) method, which integrates 3 research by design techniques - narrative drawing, analytical mapping and architectural montage, this research aims to investigate widely differing natural layers of the given territory, and thus offer a holistic view of the urban
environment.

AB - The main goal of this research project is to propose a new seeing of architectural montage which is strongly motivated by the framework of the newly formed field of study in research by design community – design-driven research.

AB - This research investigates the condition of unbuilt spaces in urban areas that reside in the interim between previous use and not-yet-decided new development. These unbuilt spaces are considered as valuable in the context of urban landscape. In order to acknowledge the character and quality of unbuilt spaces, design and planning procedures need to incorporate new interpretative techniques. The proposed NSA method integrates three research-by-design techniques that enable landscape researchers/designers to broaden the scope of disciplinary research practice. The conducted research is interdisciplinary and stands in the intersection of two research fields in the context of scale—urban planning and architectural design. The aim of this research is to propose the new methodological apparatus, which offers a holistic view on the notion of territory in regard to the notion of scale. The analysis takes the position that small-scale architectural design procedures and methods also apply to the scale of the landscape—territory. The proposed method—Narrative Spatial Analytics (NSA)—is based on simultaneous design procedures in opposing scales, assuming the overall significance of simultaneous understanding of the territory and the site.

To Be and Not to Build: A Contingent Manifesto for Sustainable Belgrade

AB - More than 100 years after the Manifesto of Futurist Architecture written by Antonio Sant’Elia and reinterpreted by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, the founder of Italian Futurism, we are once again questioning our ventures and an ongoing course of our discipline. The Italian futurists radically speculated that our houses would last less long than we and that each generation, would have to build its own city. But our thoughts about architecture and design altogether are nowadays fundamentally altered. The pandemic situation we are currently living in shows how frozen globalized production systems are, as Bruno Latour argues, not only seen as a great opportunity for the ecologists, rather as a vast potential for the reconceptualization of our working models. So what does this mean for architects and architecture discipline?

This research project aims to design a narrative for the (un)built environments of the future; a narrative that is at once economically realistic and ecologically positive. The concept of sustainability in this research is represented in the state of not building anything ever again: The only sustainable architecture is the one that is built upon the existing built environment. What can’t be rebuilt or built upon becomes the third landscape: no extra land is to be occupied by architecture ever again. The proposed scenario for the future does not evolve from architectural motivation- rather, architecture is an agency that reacts to changing circumstances.

This work is a design-based manifesto. It is embedded in the research that was conducted in the city of Belgrade as proving grounds. By using the research-by-design method this research attempts to make a small contribution to the long-lasting culture of manifestos in the architectural discipline. This design-based manifesto is conceived through research that has been developing through an elective course at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Architecture for the past 3 years.

Superpowers of Montage: A Design-Driven Research Experiment

AB - This paper presents one segment of a multi-part essay that investigates the ‘superpowers’ of montage. The main goal of the essay is to thoroughly examine the uncharted territories in the interspace between various disciplines - mainly architecture, but also film and other visual arts, in which montage as a technique has taken remarkably diverse forms. The aim of this particular paper is to present an interdisciplinary design-driven research experiment, which used montage technique as a design research tool. In this experiment, montage was not only used as a representation technique, rather it was employed as a main compositional and logical principle in the creative process. Therefore, this paper aims to define and describe in detail seven fairly distinct phases of design-driven research experiment. This interdisciplinary research attempts to contribute to the ongoing discussion on montage in architectural design and research, as well as to the recently established design-driven research field, which focuses on valuation of design thinking, design research methodologies and knowledge contributions made possible by design.

abstract = "This paper presents one segment of a multi-part essay that investigates the ‘superpowers’ of montage. This interdisciplinary research attempts to contribute to the ongoing discussion on montage in architectural design and research, as well as to the recently established design-driven research field, which focuses on valuation of design thinking, design research methodologies and knowledge contributions made possible by design.",
