AB - This article is based on the analysis of the referential relationship within three concepts for the development of the urban matrix: High-rise City by Ludwig Hilberseimer (1924), No-Stop City by studio Archizoom Associati (1969), and Stop City by architectural office DOGMA (2007). The three projects represent a critique of the growth and development of the city within the economic system and the sociocultural context of the time. This research argues that each project finds its formal expression through referencing the former, adopting the programmatic, formative, and linguistic structures, which enable the reading of the authors’ interpretations and positions in relation to the generic properties of the urban matrix. Furthermore, the research aims to reveal the referential relationship between the aforementioned projects by comparing the critical positions they represent and the elements that constitute them.

Peripheral Perspectives: Broadening the View on Urban Nature [poster & exhibition session]

AB - This research presents an attempt to revisit the dichotomous relationship between the urban and the rural, the city and the countryside or the space of production and the space of consumption. Major political and urban transformations of the last decade of the 20th century, along with various global crises, from climate to economic and housing, which are currently present, somehow improved the marginalized state of the countryside. Since then, we can identify a growing number of people migrating from urban to rural areas and therefore, a growing number of architects, urbanists, planners, geographers, theorists, philosophers, and others that are dealing with the concept of redefining the countryside.
What can we learn about a particular urban environment from its natural and rural surroundings? This research aims to challenge the common understanding of the urban environment, by proposing a new displaced view, a strategy of understanding the built environment through its peripheral nature and its surrounding rural sprawl. Furthermore, this research aims to emphasize and promote the impact of nature and natural surroundings on the urban environment. Instead of focusing on the built urban environment in order to understand the contemporary condition of built space, this research argues that defocusing the built and researching the perimeter instead can provide for substantial new knowledge about the urban context. Through acknowledging nature and the unbuilt, we tend to produce new knowledge about our built environments. By employing the NSA (Narrative Spatial Analytics) method, which integrates 3 research by design techniques - narrative drawing, analytical mapping and architectural montage, this research aims to investigate widely differing natural layers of the given territory, and thus offer a holistic view of the urban
environment.

arhitektonske i kulturne scene Grada.

to some extent shaped the course of architectural thought of the 1960s and 1970s. Having implications to date, the former could be considered a global condition, and the latter a global event.

AB - This research investigates the condition of unbuilt spaces in urban areas that reside in the interim between previous use and not-yet-decided new development. These unbuilt spaces are considered as valuable in the context of urban landscape. In order to acknowledge the character and quality of unbuilt spaces, design and planning procedures need to incorporate new interpretative techniques. The proposed NSA method integrates three research-by-design techniques that enable landscape researchers/designers to broaden the scope of disciplinary research practice. The conducted research is interdisciplinary and stands in the intersection of two research fields in the context of scale—urban planning and architectural design. The aim of this research is to propose the new methodological apparatus, which offers a holistic view on the notion of territory in regard to the notion of scale. The analysis takes the position that small-scale architectural design procedures and methods also apply to the scale of the landscape—territory. The proposed method—Narrative Spatial Analytics (NSA)—is based on simultaneous design procedures in opposing scales, assuming the overall significance of simultaneous understanding of the territory and the site.

To Be and Not to Build: A Contingent Manifesto for Sustainable Belgrade

AB - More than 100 years after the Manifesto of Futurist Architecture written by Antonio Sant’Elia and reinterpreted by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, the founder of Italian Futurism, we are once again questioning our ventures and an ongoing course of our discipline. The Italian futurists radically speculated that our houses would last less long than we and that each generation, would have to build its own city. But our thoughts about architecture and design altogether are nowadays fundamentally altered. The pandemic situation we are currently living in shows how frozen globalized production systems are, as Bruno Latour argues, not only seen as a great opportunity for the ecologists, rather as a vast potential for the reconceptualization of our working models. So what does this mean for architects and architecture discipline?

This research project aims to design a narrative for the (un)built environments of the future; a narrative that is at once economically realistic and ecologically positive. The concept of sustainability in this research is represented in the state of not building anything ever again: The only sustainable architecture is the one that is built upon the existing built environment. What can’t be rebuilt or built upon becomes the third landscape: no extra land is to be occupied by architecture ever again. The proposed scenario for the future does not evolve from architectural motivation- rather, architecture is an agency that reacts to changing circumstances.

This work is a design-based manifesto. It is embedded in the research that was conducted in the city of Belgrade as proving grounds. By using the research-by-design method this research attempts to make a small contribution to the long-lasting culture of manifestos in the architectural discipline. This design-based manifesto is conceived through research that has been developing through an elective course at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Architecture for the past 3 years.

(Open International Competition for Standard Housing and Residential Development Concept Design)
AB - The research that is conducted in this paper aims to investigate the potentials of complex housing configurations for designing and developing contemporary, dynamic neighborhoods. Research is conducted for the purpose of participating in an Open International Competition for Standard Housing and Residential Development Concept Design in Russia, organized by the Strelka Institute in December of 2017. The paper develops a comparative theoretical analysis of housing types in Russia and Yugoslavia of the second half of XX century, (Khrushchyovka residential developments and New Belgrade housing) with the aim of constructing a platform, and a departure point for contemporary housing Models. This research sees the potential in selecting and combining specific aspects of modernist housing doctrine for contemporary housing models, through composing complex, hybrid configurations. Theoretical position for hybridity as a post-typological condition in architectural discourse is also developed in the paper. In this case, hybridity is considered both in the context of the program, as in the context of the form (vertical and horizontal). This paper argues that contemporary living implies new methods and models of housing that transgress conventional typological practices and involves complex configurations in order to address the contemporary needs of everyday life. Presented research questions the status of prefabricated, over-defined structures of Khrushchyovka residential developments, opening the topics of duration, sustainability and inherited types of living in the context of adaptive capacity for contemporary dwelling needs. The above-explained comparative research is further developed as a research by design through the competition proposal. The design proposal is developed as a spatial principle that, depending on the spatial circumstances, can be combined and organized in different configurations. Therefore, three suggested types are developed as variations of the principle.

The pleasures of not knowing: questioning the static nature of architecture

AB - The architectural design process is not about controlling built structures and environments, but rather about anticipating events. Today, we are empowered to believe that we can resolve all design challenges. But sometimes, instead of solving issues (that probably we ourselves created in the first place), we might want to focus on eliminating the problem altogether during the process of design itself. Even though buildings are static in the way they are conceived and built, they still possess a dynamic feature, the most prominent being that of aging.
Therefore, we can assume that architectural space is more about the processes of designing and building, then aging and eventually disappearing, and less about the finite, projected image of a designed object. In this regard, it is crucial that these design challenges are investigated and tested in actual environments. Experiments in designing structures can take us closer to grasping the elusive state of a physical object.
This paper discusses the theoretical concept of temporality, arguing that the object is part of the design process itself. This opens a debate on the incompleteness of the design process focused on spatial potentials and structural possibilities. These issues were investigated through a series of workshops that questioned the static nature of architecture, in order to explore and widen the scope of the practice.

This opens a debate on the incompleteness of the design process focused on spatial potentials and structural possibilities. These issues were investigated through a series of workshops that questioned the static nature of architecture, in order to explore and widen the scope of the practice.",

AB - Abstract
Outside platform sets the framework for research into architectural practice by examining the conditions of contemporary context. The OUTSIDE project proposes the notion of otherness by rethinking the existing architectural concepts materialized in practice, while striving to structure new mechanisms for their interpretation.
In this way, selected projects become elements for the interpretation of reality - a radical critique of modern society, the genesis of the multiple layers of perception or the experience of the impossible. One of the main intentions was to underline the capacity of a regional scene for producing architectural newness beyond the local framework of architectural education, regulations and structural patterns of the practice. The presented research argues that formal regulations and conditions of architectural practice are inversely proportional to the innovative approaches in architecture.

Operacionalizujući logiku tradicionalnog primorskog graditeljstva, studija ispituje mogućnosti i potencijale za definisanje (uspostavljanje) integralne projektantske uloge u zaštiti dragocenog arhitektonsko-urbanističkog nasleđa kroz savremeno disciplinarno i praktično delovanje.

[ENG]
This study focuses on the polemical outline of spatial and architectural inconsistencies of the recent architectural production in the context of Montenegrin coast. Therefore, this study investigates the possibilities for new typological framework, which would incorporate evolutive capacity of inherited, historically affirmed spatial syntaxes as an apparatus for addressing the elusive conditions of contemporary society in the context of economical and professional transition.
The logic of traditional Mediterranean craftsmanship is operationalized through the contemporary disciplinary practical method and design process as a potential for defining a new integral role of architecture in preserving valuable architectural and urban heritage.
This study also opens a debate of how to intervene in the context of inherited, natural and built ambients; what are the possible correctives and trajectories of future development? What are the models of professional conduct and conditions for protection that enable adequate economical growth, without jeopardizing the tradition and character of inherited landscape?

AB - This research focuses on developing a position towards the concept of housing and production as complementary programs in urban environments. The position that is represented in this research addresses the issue of sustainability of architectural space using two key notions: ecology + economy. Alternative definitions and interpretations of these two notions can offer a new understanding of the concept of sustainability in architecture. In this sense, ecology is considered as a practice that deals with the relations between people, and at the same time to their physical surroundings. Therefore, ecology implies social interactions. Economy is considered as a careful management of available resources. However, economy is also a relational activity, which implies diverse interactions between people (in sharing and distributing resources).
Introductiory chapter of research opens a discussion on:
- Challenges of contemporary city living
- Urban-rural dichotomy and the rise of networks
- Towards new concepts of urban living

AB - The aim of this paper is to investigate the potentials of utilizing the notion of scale as a methodological tool during a process of architectural design. This design method is exercised through a framework of Architecture and Nature design studio, within the program of undergraduate studies, Faculty of Architecture, University of Belgrade. The major architectural challenge was the issue of scale of a design (micro) in relation to the scale of the context (macro), proposing micro design as macro concept, the overall significance of concurrent perception of the whole and its parts. The proposed design method is based on simultaneous design procedures in opposing scales. In architectural design, scale is commonly perceived as a mere tool for optimizing and communicating the project.
During the course of design process, answers for each architectural question are searched for in the scale of the context (a network - topography), as well as in the scale of a detail (a dot – element). Within such a framework, students were expected to give a proposal for localized programmatic and spatial intervention that, as an impulse point, has the potential influence on and affects the ground of the overall context of the War Island.

AB - The proposed thesis studies a typological determination of the architectural production in respect of which the research considers the possibility of establishing new models and techniques of architectural design involving typological analysis, not as a fixed rule of imposed classification, but as transformable component of the design process itself. The study initially forms a critical review of knowledge about architectural typologies and the role of the type in the context of architectural design. Secondly, the thesis explores relevant philosophical concepts which can be insturmentalized into architectural discourse with the aim of creating conditions for the development of new methodological approaches to architectural design. Finally, the hypothesis is verified through the research by design method, which represents an iterative link between analytical and intuitive action in architectural process. Historically, the generic architecture occurs within a social context of mass production (Ford's Model), and is encouraged by the need for mass production of architecture. On the other hand, contemporaneity is characterized by activities that can be practiced apart from the characteristics of physical space, therefore this study questions the role of architectural types in the reality of individual cultural production (as opposed to consumerism)...
