AB - Green roofs are becoming common practice in building new public build-ings and are considered the roofs for the future since they address the issue of energy and environment simultaneously, providing social, environmental and economic benefits. Despite these benefits, retrofitting an existing building with a green roof is not widely practiced. Undergoing such a project is no small task since it requires a thorough investigation of existing building’s constraints, functional, material, and technological to even begin considering design options. Therefore, this process requires specific, case-sensitive approach, especially with the aim of improving the building’s energy performance. This paper presents a methodological approach and design proposals of a green roof retrofit project, through a case study of Belgrade’s “City Housing” building. This retrofit project presents an interesting research topic since it incorporates three distinct roofs, of all of different types, different ways of accessibility and levels of privacy, varying top-to-bottom from a simple extensive roof through a semi-public semi/intensive roof garden to a ground-level public park with trees and intensive vegetation. Also, since this building provides socially signif-icant services, it is frequently visited by general public which presents a potential for introducing educational and demonstration elements in the retrofit project, not only the functional and technological ones. That way, this project can be a showcase example, promoting greening the roofs of Belgrade’s existing public buildings as a way of improving their energy performance.

AB - Measurements of heat fl ux in order to determine characteristics of thermal envelope have been widely used in performance testing and verifi cation of building quality when it comes to new buildings. They are also used for determining thermal performance characteristics of existing building’s thermal envelope components of unknown structure. Through these measurements U value of building envelopes is determined and compared to the one estimated by calculations. This paper presents a case study of an analysis of defects present in the façade wall of an existing building in order to determine its thermal performance characteristics and improvement possibilities. Several spots were measures and respective U values have been determined based on the measures heat fl ux and temperature values. The results show the infl uence of numerous parameters on façade wall thermal performance, such as moisture content, shading, usage regime etc.
The conclusions driven based on these analyses determined the proposed energy rehabilitation and refurbishment measures. Since the analysed building represents one of the typical buildings in residential building stock in Serbia and in the region, these conclusions can serve as valuable information for similar cases.

AB - Various aspects of building technologies are integrated into contemporary design approaches in sustainable heritage treatment. From the basic analysis of buildings, starting from applied materials and structural characteristics to the complex design interventions and their impact on future building performance, strategies, and tools related to technological issues are constantly being developed. These tools are used throughout the design process and serve for testing and validation of various concepts. On the other hand, many strategies and approaches integrate technological issues
in the core steps of building design, starting from the initial concepts. Usually used as an adjective for the word design (environmentally responsive, energy conscious, climate- sensitive, carbon neutral, etc.) these numerous concepts carry an added value, which contributes to the qualities
of environmental protection and/or comfort issues. While these diverse tendencies should be encouraged, there is also a raising need for all those values to become integral to the design process. This approach is being encouraged by legislation, and to a larger extent by market uptake (through labelling), but still, all the mentioned values are too often being regarded as an added feature, relying on technological solutions. Mapping the overlaps in the different approaches and actions which all have a similar technological background is the first step in defining a common methodology for sustainable heritage treatment.

AB - The research presents approaches to the complex refurbishment of multi-family buildings
constructed during the mass construction period in Serbia. These buildings comprise a quarter of
Serbia’s housing stock, are characterized by high energy consumption for heating, and have major
spatial and organizational deficiencies: small apartments, outdated and inflexible spatial organization, and the absence of elevators. The subject of the research is the application of the methodology of complex and integrated refurbishment by adding volume to existing multi-family buildings with the goal of achieving higher energy efficiency while remodeling and modernizing residential units and improving vertical building communications. The research presents a comparative analysis of the energy performance and spatial organization of the existing building and three variants of building improvement: Case 1 (without volumetric additions), Case 2 (with volumetric additions—relocating vertical communications), and Case 3 (with volumetric additions—expanding usable living space).
Based on the Knaufterm simulations, the energy savings for heating energy consumption compared to the existing state are 81% in Case 1, 89% in Case 2, and 87% in Case 3. Based on predefined parameters of spatial comfort, a comparative analysis of spatial comfort in residential units was conducted for all three improvement variants.

AB - The refurbishment of existing buildings with the aim of spatial-material improvement
combined with the reduction of energy consumption is a very contemporary topic in
recent years. The interest, both of experts and the general population, in saving energy
while minimizing operating costs is constantly increasing, and it is emphasized by the
uncertainties of energy supply coupled with constant increase in prices. Residential
buildings built in the period from 1946 to 1970 make up one quarter of the total multifamily
stock in Serbia. Most of these buildings are characterized by high energy
consumption for heating due to poor thermal performance of the building envelope.
Created according to the design regulations valid at that time, valued by today's user
requirements, they have major spatial and organizational deficiencies, notably small
apartments, outdated and inflexible spatial organization and small windows on the
facades. The absence of elevators in many multi-family buildings from that period also
reduces their comfort of use. The subject of the research is based on application of deep
refurbishment methodology by adding volumes, as a constructive-functional element, to
existing multi-family buildings. Primary goal represents achieving high energy efficiency
levels combined with bettering of spatial and living standards through remodeling and
modernization of residential units, and improving vertical building communications. The
paper will illustrate the application of the principle of volumetric addition on three
typologically different multi-family residential buildings. Based on the National Typology of
Residential Buildings of Serbia, the subject of research are most common building
typologies: free-standing buildings, row buildings within a city block and “lamellas”. The
research will analyze energy performance of the existing state on representative buildings
of each type, as well as performance of improved state through application of strategy of
deep refurbishment by adding a volume. The goal of the research is to review the
advantages and limitations of proposed method for energy and spatial improvements in
different types of multi-family residential buildings.

AB - The paper presents the methodological approach for improvement of energy performance of public buildings in the process of partial refurbishment, having in mind the constrains that are originating from existing technological, material and stylistic characteristics. Being the carriers of wider social and historical connotations, these buildings are often under the certain level of protection as the parts of the cultural heritage making the process of improvement a complex one. For this reason, an improvement path algorithm has been defined and consequently tested on two representative cases investigating the boundaries, possibilities and outcomes of the energy refurbishment procedures.

abstract = "The paper presents the methodological approach for improvement of energy performance of public buildings in the process of partial refurbishment, having in mind the constrains that are originating from existing technological, material and stylistic characteristics. Being the carriers of wider social and historical connotations, these buildings are often under the certain level of protection as the parts of the cultural heritage making the process of improvement a complex one. For this reason, an improvement path algorithm has been defined and consequently tested on two representative cases investigating the boundaries, possibilities and outcomes of the energy refurbishment procedures.,

AB - Energy refurbishment of school buildings is a priority regarding both energy consumption
in buildings and improving comfort conditions for sensitive young occupants. During 2016–18, a
group of teachers and associates from the Faculty of Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, and
Electrical Engineering from the University in Belgrade participated in the project “Energy efficiency
in public buildings” in cooperation with GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit), University of Belgrade, Faculty of Architecture and Ministry of Mining and Energy of the Republic of Serbia. During 2016 and 2017, a comprehensive survey and database of public buildings were conducted by the local community. The focus of the research was the facilities of children’s institutions, and detailed data were collected to determine the current building stock conditions, energy consumption, and possible improvements. This paper presents the methodology of the project based on defining the typology of buildings, determining the representatives of the characteristic periods of construction, and analyzing their energy performance. Five possible scenarios were considered: designed condition, existing state, and three levels of a building improvement. The main goal of this project was to ascertain the entire fund for school buildings, indicate the potential for energy savings of this type of public building at the national level, and use this as a starting point for developing strategic decisions and further energy efficiency policies. This paper presents the complete results of the research on school buildings in Serbia, their energy performance, and possible energy savings. Key findings show that a great majority of schools are in a poor state in terms of their energy efficiency, but at the same time, there is a large potential for improvement of building envelope, HVAC, and lighting systems, which can cut the current energy need for heating to up to 80%.

Modelska rešenja razvijena su primenom principa projektovanja bioklimatske, ekološke, energetski efikasne i održive arhitekture, imajući u vidu programske, klimatske, topološke i društveno-ekonomske specifičnosti područja Vojvodine uz razmatranje varijantnih opcija primerenim različitim tipovima detektovanih termomineralnih voda i lekovitih faktora.
AB - The balneological potential of the Pannonian Basin has long been recognized and exploited in some localities. During the last decades it has become especially important as a driver of specific forms of medical, wellness and spa tourism. Paradigm changes in balneology also result in changes in program and functional requirements related to medical and wellness facilities. Furthermore, the need for vicinity of the hydrogeological resource often implies construction outside populated areas, on environmentally sensitive sites with poor infrastructure, emphasising the need to build in accordance with the principles of sustainable development.
In order to define design strategies and models for structures suitable for contemporary balneological programs, a series of passive measures and systems, applicable in the given conditions, which minimize the ecological footprint and energy needs of facilities, were investigated. Significant reduction of energy needs, already in conceptual design phase, coupled with the use of on-site renewable energy sources greatly facilitates the achievement of a high degree of infrastructural independence.
The designs were developed by applying the principles of bioclimatic, ecological, energy efficient and sustainable architecture, having in mind the program, climate, topological and socio-economic specifics of Vojvodina and specifics of various types of detected thermo-mineral waters and healing factors.

AB - This paper presents the methodology for the implementation of building typology principles
as a tool for the strategic planning of residential building stock energy retrofits on a municipal
level in Serbia. Research was conducted under the IEE EPISCOPE (Intelligent Energy Europe EPISCOPE/ TABULA project) project with the aim of developing an adequate tool for creating building stock energy retrofit management strategies on a local level. An approach that envisions the diversity and uneven spatial distribution of building stock in smaller scale municipalities and includes statistically relevant sampling of all relevant building types was developed and tested in the pilot project that focused on the city of Vršac. Two options for local typology development were formulated: a top-down approach, which relies on the data from the national typology or other available databases by reducing them to the local level, and a bottom-up approach, which represents a new data gathering and processing method. Both approaches were tested in the pilot project and the results are compared in this paper. From the conclusions of these analyses, a common methodology for the development of local building typologies has been defined. It can be used in the strategic planning of building stock, whether for the purpose of developing local energy action plans (LEAPs) or other purposes internationally.

AB - The study presented in this paper assessed the multidisciplinary approach of geothermal
potential in the area of the most southeastern part of the Pannonian basin, focused on resources
utilization. This study aims to present a method for the cascade use of geothermal energy as a source
of thermal energy for space heating and cooling and as a resource for balneological purposes. Two
particular sites were selected—one in a natural environment; the other within a small settlement.
Geothermal resources come from different types of reservoirs having different temperatures and
chemical compositions. At the first site, a geothermal spring with a temperature of 20.5 ◦C is
considered for heat pump utilization, while at the second site, a geothermal well with a temperature
of 54 ◦C is suitable for direct use. The calculated thermal power, which can be obtained from
geothermal energy is in the range of 300 to 950 kW. The development concept was proposed with an
architectural design to enable sustainable energy efficient development of wellness and spa/medical
facilities that can be supported by local authorities. The resulting energy heating needs for different
scenarios were 16–105 kW, which can be met in full by the use of geothermal energy.

AB - This paper presents the methodology and results of design studio whose main topic is sustainability, specifically relating to existing building energy refurbishment, at the postgraduate level - specialist academic studies – Energy efficient and green architecture at the University of Belgrade-Faculty of Architecture. Weaknesses and opportunities in teaching sustainability in a design studio are discussed. It points to concrete challenges that the theme of building energy conservation and refurbishment present, and to ways in which they might be integrated in education. This paper considers how the design studio pedagogy could encourage deep and active learning for sustainable design in an attempt to expand the role of the architect to be more responsive to the environmental needs of contemporary society.
Methodology of this studio uses the approach of project-oriented learning by simulating a real-life multidisciplinary project development environment. Three phases of design development are described as: research phase, refurbishment phase and redesign phase. It starts with the research phase, which is developed in parallel with the refurbishment phase. This is because the refurbishment process in this studio is not just limited to the technical aspects of energy efficiency improvement, verified through calculations and simulations. Several design scenarios are developed, examining the minimal, optimal and maximal range of energy efficiency improvements in technical systems and building thermal envelope. Analysis of these scenarios, but also analysis of a much wider spectre of aspects influencing the refurbishment design, results in a final redesign proposal which is a comprehensive, deep refurbishment proposal, tackling not only energy (under)performance, but also possibilities for upgrade of functional, technical and aesthetical aspects of existing building.

AB - Global trends of rapid and constant urbanisation are constantly revealing new societal, spatial and technological challenges, which naturally directs research focus towards urban areas. Urbanisation and imminent migrations, however, have significant repercussions on rural areas as well: exposure of tangible and intangible cultural heritage to decay, leading to extinction, can be identified as one of such processes that indirectly affect entire population, not only the scarce locals.
In the quest for sustainable proposals tailored for small and fragile communities with notable architectural and cultural heritage, the W.A.Ve Abroad Workshop explored sustainable models of revitalization of the village Bebića Luka in the vicinity of Valjevo in Western Serbia. During the workshop which was held in Belgrade, Bebića Luka and Venice in June and July 2018, architecture students from Belgrade, Venice and Ljubljana were analysing the multiple layers of Bebića Luka’s present and past, trying to envision future scenarios and define adequate programmatic and design proposals. The workshop results included new models of activities, tailored to enable preservation of the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the village through interactions between permanent and temporary residents, providing first-hand mutual exchange of specific knowledges. This process should expose local residents to some useful state-of-the-art concepts while directly transferring unique heritage of the village of Bebića Luka and the surrounding area to the visitors that will eventually return to urban areas. The workshop results were presented at IUAV University in Venice, during the final manifestations of the W.A.Ve 2018 Workshop in which more than 1500 students participated, which for the first time also included mentorship from teachers from five foreign universities.
The paper presents an overview of the methodological approach, derived concepts and design proposals for variety of interventions: from retrofitting the existing facilities to development of new complementary physical structures designed in accordance with principles of circular economy and sustainable development.

AB - Kindergartens are probably the very first public buildings we actively use in our lives. Therefore, they can be considered as the physical structures that are providing for the very important educational and social function. Additionally, they can also be considered as the specific learning tool for future generations where they can encounter the ideas of green and energy-efficient buildings. One of the results of the research project “Energy efficiency in public buildings” has been formulated through the development of Serbian National Typology of Kindergartens which was conceived as a specific tool that can be used for improving this portion of building stock. The paper presents the methodology for identification of typical kindergarten buildings, covering various construction periods, building sizes and illustrates the type of analysis performed for model representatives. The potential for energy upgrades covering physical structure, installed technological systems, as well as expected impact on energy performance, has been estimated. The study presents results based on the analysis of the data derived from the National Typology, stressing out that energy retrofits of large and medium-sized kindergartens built during the 1970s and 1980s should be the primary focus of refurbishment activities. Accounting for almost 60% of total buildings and 69.59% of heated area, they are responsible for 75.97% of energy demands. Estimated energy savings of more than 60% indicate the effectiveness of their retrofit. The paper also presents the potential uses of National Typology as a retrofit tool on various scales, from single-building considerations to a strategic approach at the national level.

AB - Due to its geological specificities, Vojvodina is abundant with various balneological resources. During 2018, an extensive multidisciplinary research was conducted in order to investigate the current condition on 50 sites, explore the quality and quantity of relevant resources and offer proposals for developing contemporary balneology facilities. The architectural programs spanned from modest drinking fountains to complex developments and resorts with variety of facilities. Throughout the process, a series of model units were developed and tailored to match the medical and therapeutical requirements with the imperatives of environmentally conscious, sustainable and resilient architecture.
Typological and modular approach was identified as the most efficient both for effective development and construction in various circumstances as well as for promoting the balneology as a rediscovered potential for healthcare tourism, well-being and revival of some local communities. Site-specific architectural design is perceived as one of the key premises of green architecture; however, the topology of Vojvodina planes has enabled the development of modular units that are easily adjusted to the specific site. These units were developed aiming to achieve different functional and esthetical variations using the same basic structure, building principles and components. Furthermore, this approach enables seasonal variations and optimisations in facility’s capacity, allowing the permanent, year-round operation avoiding unnecessary operation costs and maintaining favourable ecological footprint. Finally, by using the optimised units for potential extensions, maintaining and improving of building performance is secured, while keeping recognizable and uncompromised architectural language throughout facility’s life span. The use of passive design features and on-site renewable energy resources (solar and geothermal) was also taken into the consideration from the conceptual design phase.
The paper systematically presents the scope and achieved results of the research process with an overview of selected case study examples showing the application options in various conditions.

AB - The study process of segments of gyms resulted in the formation of the appropriate typology, including the analysis of possibilities for improvement of energy performance of not only construction elements and assemblies, but also of HVAC and electrical power systems. The identified types and results of the calculation of energy performance and potential for improvement are indicative for coming to conclusions on the possible strategies and approached to rehabilitation in individual cases. The typology of gyms may, in certain cases, be brought into correlation with the existing national typology of schools, thus allowing for the conclusions of implemented analyses to be used as elements of a uniform strategy of energy retrofitting and rehabilitation of the entire segment of school buildings

AB - Application of renewable energy sources in school, gym and kindergarten buildings is a study where a multidisciplinary team of experts defined possible modalities and scopes of application of different available types of renewable energy sources in Serbia, taking into account the limitations imposed by the numerous conditions, primarily locations. The introductory part describes the importance of renewable sources implementation in global and local sustainable development tendencies, same as the applicable international and domestic legislation. This is followed by the defined calculation methodology of required capacities and energy gains for each of the analysed technologies underlying the application of renewable energy sources. The analysis encompassed heat pump systems, possibility of biomass energy implementation, and the possibility for solar energy implementation via thermal solar collectors and photovoltaic systems. The possibility for implementation of the defined methodology in theoretical part is illustrated by specific cases of school and kindergarten buildings, but also school gym buildings, in line with the previously defined typologies and conditions in specific locations.

AB - The quest to achieve high standards in energy efficiency has resulted in the development of complex simulation tools that aim for a precise calculation of energy performance, thus supporting building design as well as the management process.
Common questions regarding the simulation of performance address several issues: during what stage is simulation being conducted (preliminary design, main design, dimensioning of the systems, certification), how complex is the procedure, what resources are needed (data and computational) etc.
In everyday practice we are confronted with a variety of available software options, each of which is advertised as the right choice for building energy performance simulation. With regard to the approach towards modelling, complexity, and simulation processes, we can distinguish several application levels, each having certain advantages and disadvantages. The starting point for an adequate simulation procedure relies on the available legislation and professional standards, calculation procedures, and computational logic. Depending on the desired outcome or goal of the process, an adequate simulation strategy must be applied. A comparison between the two most commonly used pieces of simulation software in Serbia, KnaufTerm2 and Ecotect, has been conducted, illustrating the differences in procedure and the results gained.

abstract = "The quest to achieve high standards in energy efficiency has resulted in the development of complex simulation tools that aim for a precise calculation of energy performance, thus supporting building design as well as the management process.
AB - Sustainability and resilience of public buildings nowadays represent key features that transcend
the functional and institutional role of their physical structures. In contemporary societies,
public buildings are often envisioned as model buildings as well, serving as good practice
examples, demonstrating the immediate and long-term benefits of green building principles.
School buildings play a very important role in this communication, and in developed countries
they themselves serve as a learning tool. Being educated in a green and energy efficient building,
students adopt building’s design and operation features as everyday standard, transferring
the same design and operational modelsas well as comfort levels (expectations) to their future
working and living spaces. The wider effect on the local community is similar. The average
lifespan of school buildings implies the necessity to pay special attention to refurbishment of
these structures enabling prolonged and contemporary use.Within a project “Energy efficiency
in public buildings”, a collaboration between GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale
Zusammenarbeit), University of Belgrade – Faculty of Architecture and Ministry of Mining and
Energy of the Republic of Serbia, special attention was paid to the school buildings. National
Typology of School Buildings was conceived as a tool for improving this portion of building
stock. A nationwide survey was conducted, covering 3990 public buildings with apurposely
developed questionnaire for schools and kindergartens, resulting in formulation of unique database
of these buildings (1857 schools). The paper presents methodology for identification of
typical school buildings, covering various construction periods and building sizes. The paper
further illustrates the type of analysis performed for type representatives, estimated potential
for energy upgrades and expected impact on energy performance. The expected impact on
local and national level is also being assessed.

AB - The aim of this research is to examine and analyse the thermal characteristics of the facade modular element. The possibility of optimization of the facade coating with vegetation is examined experimentally in this research, with the aim of improving the thermal characteristics of the facade wall. This element is made of perlite concrete in which the greenery is implanted. The scope of the research is experimental and theoretical testing the possibility for optimizing the facade coating with vegetation. The energy specificities of modular vegetation elements and their contribution to the improvement of the thermal properties of the facade wall are analysed in the experimental part of the research, the elements of vegetation are treated as the elements which influence the decrease in surface temperature of the facade coating. The modular elements in this research are placed on a reference wall surface facing the South. The methodology presented in this paper is based on the study of climate characteristics in city of Belgrade, experimental measurements of test models, and comparative analysis with the reference wall. During the experiment, the data on the external climate parameters and the coefficient of heat transfer through the wall were continuously measured. Conducted measurements and analyses show the vegetation influence on the reduction in surface temperature of the outer wall and the heat passage through the facade coating. The experiment used a modular model and several plant species. It is noticeable that vegetative walls with green areas covered by plant shells play an important role in the harmonization of the parameters of the microclimate in relation to the local environment.

AB - Developments conceived following the principles of Athens Charter were typical form of urban answer to the post-war housing shortage and during the decades of intense construction activity that followed. In city of Belgrade, multifamily housing in open city blocks built between 1961 and 1990 account for about 40% of current housing stock. The current ownership and operation of these housing blocks derive from their socialist legacy: home-owners rights relate only to the buildings, excluding any open spaces, even the ones immediately along the building's perimeter. On the other hand, heating is supplied by district heating system. Management of open spaces as well as provision of district heating are subordinates to local municipality (the city of Belgrade). Energy efficiency related refurbishment options for these developments that would engage both the home-owners and the public companies may be the key for bringing ever-needed modernization, prolonged lifespan and a sustainable way of using this portion of housing stock. By applying simple architectural measures, energy demand for heating of these buildings can be reduced by 30-78%, which opens a pathway for effective use of renewable energy sources. Unlike solar energy, which can be managed at building level, geothermal energy can be exploited only at the district level due to the ownership rights. The presented research explores the effectiveness of using geothermal energy at a district level coupled with systematic approach to building refurbishment, taking the advantage of the repetitive use of the same building design and the formal and practical relations with local authorities.

AB - Developing countries are facing numerous challenges in the process of providing adequate health care to often deprived and diminished social groups. Being a country made up of a mainland territory and five islands in Gulf of Guinea, almost entirely covered by tropical rainforest, with poor road infrastructure, Equatorial Guinea is a showcase of various obstructions in developing effective health care system. The paper explores guidelines for creation of model regional hospital, commissioned by Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, with the aim of achieving high level of replicability through minor program and site-specific adjustments. The demonstrated strategies are applied on a local hospital designed to provide all basic types of health services while retaining a high level of technical independence. The architectural concept was formulated aiming to maximize the use of natural ventilation, daylight and rainwater management, leaving the operation block, laboratory and intensive care unit practically the only parts of the structure that would need mechanical air conditioning. The potential and effectiveness of use of photovoltaic units in enhancing hospital's resilience through on-site energy production was explored. The structure was designed having in mind local climate, culture and customs, thus offering a possibility of strong integration with local community. The building technology was thought over to enable efficient and cost-effective construction and proper resilience for tropical rainforest environment. The result is a structure providing for contemporary, high quality medical service, interpreting local climatic and cultural contextual premises through modern architectural expression.
