AB - Design education in architecture and its allied disciplines represents one of the cornerstones for design professionals, contributing to the sustainable future of the built environment. However, despite the dedication of educators, the changing focus in design pedagogy is still not fully embraced in the university setting. Recent concerns about outmoded and static approaches in the higher education have, therefore, triggered some new insights casing the updating, upgrading and improvement of programs. Consequently, critical thinking and inquiry, creativity and innovation, research and investigation, collaboration and civic engagement, supported by technical competences, have become increasingly valued in the contemporary design pedagogy.Following this trend, one of the master courses at the University of Belgrade -Faculty of Architecture, entitled Sustainable City, has been structured around the project oriented approach. The curriculum supports student` work, with the final test in theform of a Civil Initiative Project Proposal which responds to various ongoing competitions and calls. The process is finalised through a Civil Initiative Project Proposal data set, established on the Teams platform, providing the possibility of an active involvement into practice, while solving the various problems of local communities.

AB - The paper discusses a relationship between the neoliberal forces shaping
contemporary urban transformations and the social sustainability of recent regeneration
projects focused on urban heritage. Analysing two post-transitional cases, based on two
different approaches, the paper will provide an insight into the dominant processes influencing
both practices, as well as their anticipated/announced social sustainability and its achieved
level. The first case is from Serbia - the Power Plant "Power and Light‖ - which was the first
one generating alternating current in Belgrade. Located in the Dorcol area, this ex-industrial
setting is situated close to the city center. Since 2005, the entire area has undergone a
significant transformation into a luxurious residential and commercial complex, initiated by
private investors and directed by city authorities in order to change the previous urban
image. The second case, the Contemporary Art Center in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, represents different
approach. Created in 1997, the center is a non-governmental organisation of public interest. In
1995 the Municipality of Plovdiv obtained the right to locate the center within the remains of
the ancient baths of Rome, which were rebuilt under the Turkish Empire. As the 16th century
monument, the building belonged to the municipality and in 2004, the three-year period of
support started, provided by the association Art Today (the Swiss cultural program), as well as
the National Heritage Fund in Bulgaria. The analysis will be based on the selected principles of
social sustainability, simultaneously highlighting the problems of heritage (re)use and
regeneration in a challenging global environment of uncertain financial flows and shifting local
governmental priorities, which could put on hold or totally ignore the aspect of social
sustainability.

AB - The Danube, the longest river in the western half of Europe, has been a signifi cant physical obstacle for general territorial development in its middle and lower sections due to the river width. This obstacle for cooperation across the Danube has been further enhanced in a political way as many national borders have been outlined by the river. Therefore, many areas, cities and towns in the Danubian Region are peripheral, insuffi ciently connected and consequently underdeveloped. However, they also diff er by their other characteristics, such as size, position in national urban network, cultural heritage or the character of local economy. This means that development prospects for Danubian cities and towns cannot be properly understood just addressing their the better connectiveness across and through the river, but also taking in account their other characteristics. The aim of this paper is to check such development prospects for small and medium-sized urban settlements in the Serbian Danube Region by profi ling them through their key characteristics. An expected outcome is to form the clusters of urban settlements with subordinated planning actions. In that way, this is a contribution for the research carried through the creation of the atlas of Danubian cities in international DANUrB+ Project, which is dealing with shrinking settlements of Danube river’s peripheral and border regions, to create new possibilities to make them attractive again.

AB - The power plant “Power and Light” (1932, Belgrade) was the first one to generate alternating current in Serbia. Situated along the Danube river, it represented a part of an industrial area positioned in the Dorćol neighborhood, close to the urban core. Since 2005, the whole area has been exposed to a significant transformation into a luxurious residential and commercial complex, triggered by the intentions of private investors and directed by the ideas of changing city authorities. Considering the unpredictable local context created by the dominant post-socialist transitional economy, the article focuses on the sensitive relationship between the social sustainability of the ongoing urban regeneration plans and the emerging neoliberal forces targeting the areas of industrial heritage. Consequently, the case of the Dorćol ex-power plant and the anticipated changes in its urban surrounding are analyzed according to the selected principles of social sustainability. Revealing numerous controversies, both on the level of preferred urban policies and their questionable application, this case addresses the problems of heritage (re)use and regeneration in an environment of fast-shifting governmental priorities and financial flows, with reduced receptivity to sustainable solutions.

AB - Social, political and economic changes have generated processes of revitalization of the
built environment in post-socialist countries since the beginning of the 1990s; these changes are
related to the physical structure of the city, its facilities and its functions, as well as the city landscape.
Urban planning affects people’s quality of and way of life, as well as residential satisfaction with the
built environment, especially that of older people, who make up a significant part of sustainable communities. This paper examines the residential satisfaction of older adults in terms of mobility—that is,
their ability to move using facilities offered by public transportation and public places—in two neighborhoods of Novi Sad which have undergone the most extensive urban regeneration. This approach
is different from the existing urban studies dealing with residential satisfaction, which makes it a
contribution to the literature. Unlike previous studies—which have explored residential satisfaction
at the level of accessibility to local facilities, safety in the urban environment and support from the
environment—this paper also investigates the impact of movement in public space on the residential
satisfaction of older people. The results show that the residential satisfaction of older people is low
with regard to public transport, the arrangement of public spaces and traffic infrastructure.

AB - Climate change has become one of the biggest challenges for the sustainable
development of cities - the rapid urbanization, marking the late 20th and the beginning of
the 21st century, has highlighted cities as main arenas for testing and addressing the
effects of climate change. Due to their complexity, the cities generate their own
(changeable) logic, which affects their physical, functional and social structure. Constantly
"revisioning" and upgrading their strategic orientation, urban areas are integrating the
concept or resilience into their sustainable development goals. In order to meet the needs
of each city, local contextualization forms a distinctive framework that enables them to
resist and adapt to present and future climate challenges. Nevertheless, the recent concept
of resilience includes not only the climate change issues, but broadens it to general
principles of "sustainable" topics: economical, social, and environmental.
The focus of this paper is on the sustainability-resilience relation in strategic orientation
of cities. By examining the best practices in formulation and implementation of resilience
strategies, the aim is to define how cities perceive, adjust and (re)act to current climate
change issues while applying the holistic approach. The emphasis is on locally specific
context, particularly Belgrade, that, in spite of facing numerous socio-economic obstacles, is
trying to implement the general resilience goals and meet the sustainable demands,
simultaneously showing that less developed cities have the capacities to follow the global
trends.

AB - After more than two turbulent decades of recent history, marked by the gradual break-up of Yugoslavia, international economic sanctions, internal political conflicts and a general social and economic crisis, the cities in Serbia have been redefining their position and role to accord with a new European development framework. Implemented on both institutional and non-institutional levels, these changes have been visible in the social, economic, environmental and spatial spheres, marking the beginning of the latest transition phase.
The focus of this paper is the city of Kragujevac, the fourth largest city in the Republic of Serbia, one of the most important industrial centers of Serbia since WW II. The crises during the 1990s caused a significant economic decline, although with recent democratic changes, general conditions have improved, attracting new investors and accelerating local economic development.

Considering the current situation and the recently adopted "Integrated Urban Development Strategy for the Inner City of Kragujevac" (2012), this paper will elaborate two possible approaches toward the further transition, regeneration and development of selected urban spaces, based on the concept of temporary use and the increased interaction between the city and innovation processes. The present proposals result from work on masters’ theses, conducted under the supervision of professor Aleksandra Stupar at the Master course on 'Integral Urbanism' at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Architecture (2013/14).
