AB - The architecture of templon (stone sanctuary barrier), did not
change significantly during the Middle Ages. Certain changes
can be traced in relation to the position of the representations
of Christ and the Holy Virgin, which are important for understanding
the function of the templon. At the beginning of the
fourteenth century, a rather small church, dedicated to Sai0nts
Joachim and Anna, was built in the Studenica Monastery. The
remains of the marble closure slabs testify to the existence of a
stone templon. A reassessment of the available data has led us
to propose analysis of the original form of the templon, with
the frescoes of Christ and the Holy Virgin being its constituent
parts, painted directly to the north and south of the barrier.

AB - This study deals with the integrated process of conservation and restoration of architectural heritage and sustainability. The objective of the research was to define adequate methodologies for the structural restoration of historic buildings, their re-use, and sustainable refurbishment in accordance with modern requirements and conservation standards while maintaining the original visual character by using natural stone as an authentic building material. The main research method was the in-situ observation of the historic structures during the restoration and adaptive re-use, the analysis, and evaluation of the research findings regarding energy efficiency improvements and energy saving in the Haybarn complex within the monastery Hilandar, Mount Athos, Greece. Due to its cultural and natural values, Mount Athos has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The research included the damaged and abandoned agricultural structures that belong to the Haybarn complex and the analysis of the obtained results after the restoration had finished and the abandoned premises had been turned into guest rooms for the visitors of Hilandar monastery. The result section states the findings of the research arranged as recommendations for historic building restoration and re-use, emphasizing their new function in accordance with modern comfort requirements and environmental protection standards. The main contribution of this study is the analysis of the research findings and the possibilities of energy refurbishment of the restored historic buildings, through the use of natural stone as authentic local construction material, in accordance with energy efficiency measures and principles, conservation requirements and cultural heritage conservation standards.

AB - For its numerous medieval monuments, the Raška region in and around modern Novi Pazar
in southwestern Serbia was put on UNESCO’s list of World Cultural and Natural Heritage
sites in 1979 under the name of Stari Ras and Sopoćani. It consists of several components:
the Medieval Town of Ras, St. Peter’s church in Novi Pazar, the Monastery of Đurđevi Stupovi
and the Monastery of Sopoćani. As a living organism, situated in an intensely multi-ethnic
area that was and still is on the crossroads of diverse peoples and influences, the Stari Ras
and Sopoćani area is very challenging to manage, because the needs of cultural heritage workers and the needs of functioning monastic communities and the expanding city of Novi Pazar have to be reconciled. This paper aims at presenting the monuments that are incorporated into the Stari Ras and Sopoćani heritage site, as well as showing the character of the region and the challenges and opportunities of managing a cultural heritage site in regard to the diverse actual conditions.

Theology and the Estern Ortodox Church Architecture - Interpretation of Triadological Principle

AB - Development of the doctrine and solving the questions about God as a Trinity featured the Christian thought dependent on the most significant Judaistic ideas and on those of Late Antiquity, as well as the philosophical conceptual constructions. In a quite significant theological and philosophical text, Corpus Areopagiticum, dating from the 6 th century, a triadological image of the universe was discovered and reconstructed. For purposes of better understanding,
the concept of Trinity is compared with the concept of the Borromean Rings or Knot made of three interlocking circles or loops. The logic of the structure is that cutting any loop or ring frees all the other loops so that no two loops can be directly linked. In the Areopagite’s structure the three rings would be the three Persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, the apophatic, symbolic and kataphatic theology, the celestial, the ecclesiastical and the earthly hierarchy,
etc. In its centre, inside all the circles, is the Unity, the unity in multiplicity. As a subject of such research, the basic aspects of architecture come first – the form, the function and the structure. Each of them could be viewed separately, with its qualitative differences, but at the same time, they could not be separated, as they make architecture complete.
By making theology and architecture mutually dependent, an area for recognising a triadological structure is created, which is in analytical terms a unifying factor in a vast field of semiotic meanings. Actually, a theological concept designs an architectural space, so the principle of triadology is manifested through an act of creation.
