AB - The industrial heritage of the city of Belgrade is the focus of this research, which highlights
the possibilities of preserving industrial heritage from the perspective of a contemporary context
and sustainable development. Guided by theoretical principles on the preservation of cultural and
industrial heritage, their values, authenticity and spirit of place, as well as the idea of the necessity
of integrating industrial heritage into the contemporary context, this paper aims to examine the
possibilities for the preservation of industrial heritage following theoretically established principles,
with the introduction of new uses and sustainable solutions. The analysis of the case studies of
Belgrade’s industrial heritage presented in this paper results from research conducted by the teachers, associates and students of the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Architecture. The research focuses on the possibilities of translating the principles of preserving cultural and industrial heritage from their theoretical definition to practical application. The students’ conceptual solutions for protection, revitalisation and presentation of the analysed case studies represent the research results. An important aspect of this paper is defining the criteria for valorising students’ conceptual solutions, which are aligned with the principles of preserving cultural heritage and establishing sustainable development. The valorisation of students’ conceptual solutions through a defined set of criteria indicates real possibilities for the simultaneous preservation of all the values of industrial heritage and its transformation into a social, ecological and economic resource of the contemporary city.

AB - Industrial heritage represents an important part of the built heritage which protection doesn’t only
mean the preservation of its recognized values, but also its integration into the contemporary city. This paper
examines the possibilities for the preservation of the industrial heritage’s recognized values and its integration into
the contemporary context through the introduction of new - complementary functions in the process of its
revitalization to underline the potential of seeing the industrial heritage as an important cultural and economic
resource. Through the case study of the first Modern garage in Belgrade, conducted as part of master's and
integrated academic studies of architecture at the University of Belgrade - Faculty of Architecture; the possibilities
of protection, revitalization, and presentation of an important monument of technical culture and an example of
Belgrade's industrial heritage from the 20th century are examined. A special focus is directed toward the analysis of
the cultural-historical and architectural values, the preservation of authenticity and the finding opportunities to
preserve and improve the spirit of the place following contemporary needs. Research result includes the students'
conceptual solutions for the revitalization of the building, within which are given the proposals for preserving and
improving the spirit of the place through the protection of authentic architectural elements, innovative
representations of the former purpose and their integration with new - complementary functions with educational
and cultural character.

AB - One of the main challenges in preserving built heritage in the 21st century relates to the possibilities of its revitalisation and adaptation following modern needs while protecting its values and authenticity. Protection of built heritage does not mean only the identification, affirmation and promotion of its urban-architectural and aesthetic values but also a set of cultural-historical values for which it is necessary to recognise built heritage through a multidisciplinary approach – within the broader social context. Therefore, the teaching process at the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Architecture aims to establish a unique multi-disciplinary approach to the industrial heritage's revitalisation and adaptation. This paper shows an industrial heritage research methodology systematic representation, applied to the case study of the Hangar of the Old Airport in New Belgrade as an important monument of industrial heritage and technical culture of the 20th century. Through student proposals for revitalisation and adaptation, the applied methodology, the approach for preservation, revitalisation and presentation of industrial heritage's values and the preservation of its authenticity, as well as a description of the use of industrial heritage's values, have been given; which ensured the continuity and survival of industrial heritage for future generations. A special contribution refers to the proposals for preserving the Hangar, which contributes to the teaching process improvement in the built heritage studies at the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Architecture.

AB - Although it represents an important typology of cultural heritage, industrial heritage was unjustifiably neglected from the perspective of its preservation until the beginning of the 21st century. In addition to the observed need for protection, revitalisation and presentation of the value of industrial heritage as equally valuable material and immaterial remains of the past, the need for its integration into the contemporary context is increasingly being observed through examining the potential of its reuse. Therefore, at the University of Belgrade Faculty of Architecture, as part of classes in the field of industrial heritage preservation, through a defined multidisciplinary approach, the possibilities for the protection of the industrial heritage, preservation of the authenticity and spirit of the place, but also improvement of the industrial heritage's condition through the research of the potential of its reuse following contemporary needs are examined. The subject of this research refers to characteristical examples of the industrial heritage of the city of Belgrade, within which the possibilities of their preservation and reuse in the contemporary context were examined. The applied research methodology, which includes a combination of theoretical and in situ research, represents a multidisciplinary approach within which selected case studies are examined concerning their natural, urban architectural, historical and symbolic context. The research results are presented through students' conceptual solutions for preserving, integrating and reusing selected industrial heritage case studies. The presented students' conceptual solutions, which are created based on a previously defined set of criteria that ensure the simultaneous preservation
of the recognised values of industrial heritage and their improvement, represent an essential contribution to the development of thoughts about the position and potential of the reuse of industrial heritage in the contemporary context. The special contribution of this research refers to the possibilities of applying the theoretical research methodology in practice on concrete case studies of revitalisation, adaptation and reuse of industrial heritage.

AB - The Roman Limes is recognised as a serial cultural property of exceptional universal values of international importance by UNESCO. In the Republic of Serbia, it includes the Danube Valley. The protection, revitalisation, presentation and promotion of sites along the Danube in Serbia is a prerequisite for the entry of this part of the Roman Limes on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List. Bearing in mind the current state of a large number of sites, the question of their protection, revitalisation, presentation and promotion in a contemporary context arises. Referring to the principles of international charters and conventions, the main goal of this paper is to spread knowledge about the possibilities of the protection, revitalisation, presentation and promotion of the cultural and natural heritage of the Roman Limes in Serbia, all for the integration of cultural and natural heritage into the contemporary environment and the establishment of sustainable landscape development. The results are presented through a case study of the late antique tomb in Brestovik, through the conceptual solutions of architecture students, within which the possibilities of integrating contemporary architecture into spaces of natural and historical values were examined. The expected results include raising awareness of the possibilities of integrating natural and cultural heritage into a contemporary context, as well as considering the natural and cultural heritage as a driver for establishing sustainable landscape development.

AB - The Roman Limes, the former natural border of the Roman
Empire, has been recognized as a cultural landscape with
exceptional universal values of international importance by
the relevant organization for the protection of cultural and
natural heritage - UNESCO. The Danube River is an integral part
of the Roman Limes, a testimony to the culture and traditions
of the peoples who lived on the banks of the Danube, as well
as cultural heritage in general. Within the part of the Danube
River that passes through the Republic of Serbia, the Djerdap
segment stands out. It includes sites of different historical
periods (prehistoric, ancient and medieval) and is significant
cultural heritage on an international level. However, most of
the sites are underwater as a result of the construction of the
Djerdap Hydroelectric Power Plant. Consequently, insufficient
access to its cultural heritage has led to its insufficient
presentation and promotion, but also a lack of information
about the existence of the cultural heritage. Therefore, the main
goals of this paper are to spread knowledge about Djerdap’s
cultural and natural heritage, to promote its importance, to
identify potential for integrating the cultural heritage into
contemporary trends through the affirmation of cultural
routes, and to establish sustainable development of the cultural
landscape. The results of the research are presented through
an urban architectural project that represents the sublimation
of critical attitudes formed with regard to the protection,
presentation and promotion of cultural heritage. The project
draws from a literature analysis, case studies and examples of
good practice relevant to the research. The expected results
of the research include raising awareness of the importance
of Djerdap’s cultural heritage through promoting a cultural
route and forming a potential model for the use of its cultural
heritage in the process of establishing sustainable development
of the cultural landscape.

AB - The Roman Limes is recognised as a cultural landscape of exceptional universal values of international importance by the relevant organisation for the protection of cultural and natural heritage - UNESCO. In the Republic of Serbia, the Roman Limes include the Danube Valley, where there are sites of different historical periods (prehistoric, ancient, medieval), which represent evidence of the continuity of life on the border of the Roman Empire. Protection, revitalisation, presentation and promotion of sites along the Danube is a prerequisite for the entry of the Roman Limes in Serbia on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List. From 2020, this area is on the UNESCO Tentative List. Bearing in mind the current state of a large number of localities, the question of their protection, revitalisation, presentation and promotion in a contemporary context arises. Referring to the principles of international charters and conventions, including the Document of Authenticity, the Landscape Convention and the Charter on Cultural Routes, the main goal of this paper is to spread knowledge about the possibilities of protection, revitalisation, presentation and promotion of the cultural and natural heritage of the Roman Limes in Serbia through the application of the principles defined in international charters and conventions, all for the integration of cultural and natural heritage into contemporary environment and the establishment of sustainable landscape development. The results are presented through a case study of the archaeological site of the late antique tomb in Brestovik, through the conceptual solutions of architecture students, within which the possibilities of integrating contemporary architecture into spaces of natural and historical values were examined, while preserving the identity of natural and cultural heritage that requires specific protection, presentation and promotion. Through the process of educating students of architecture, there is a possibility of the comprehensive consideration of the problem of preserving cultural and natural heritage, its historical and urban context, origin, development, cultural, urban and architectural values, and examining the possibility and comparison of different approaches to presentation and contemporary use. In designing the future approach to the presentation and inclusion in the contemporary life of the late antique tomb in Brestovik and its surroundings, the student analyses focused on comprehensive research of the life of the tomb, from its origins to modern times, as well as discovering specific cultural values that are the basis for future preservation. The goal was to design sustainable solutions that will preserve the development phases, and the authenticity and integrity of the late antique tomb in Brestovik, while ensuring its reactivation and quality integration into its environment, which, despite numerous inadequate modern interventions, has preserved elements of the recognisable historical ambiance. Through their proposals, students have filled the complex with a large amount of contemporary cultural, educational and artistic content that correlates with its character and significance, and provides it with an active life. The expected results of the research include raising awareness of the possibilities of integrating natural and cultural heritage into the contemporary context, as well as considering the natural and cultural heritage as a driver for establishing sustainable landscape development.

AB - This paper aims to explore industrial heritage of Belgrade that is located in the city center
and therefore, has considerable potential for future architectural and urban development of the
Serbian capital. The whole Belgrade riverfront area along the Sava and the Danube Rivers has a
large number of abandoned industrial buildings that have significant value and need to be preserved
and revitalized. This paper represents a research project conducted by lecturers at the Faculty of
Architecture in Belgrade in the course History and Theory 1—Visual Culture in Architectural Theory
and Practice. In order to provide productive research, we have employed the case study method based
on the old Mint “A.D.”, which we have chosen as a characteristic example of Belgrade’s industrial
heritage architecture. An important goal of this research is to provide professional information
and raise public awareness about the importance and potential of industrial heritage for the future
economic, cultural, social and tourist development of the city. This paper analyzes possibilities to
comprehend the problems of the city’s industrial heritage protection regarding its historical and
urban context, its genesis, authenticity, identity, cultural, architectural, economic, social, productive,
creative and environmental values. According to that, the main goal of this research is concentrated
on the sustainable preservation of specific cultural tangible and intangible values, spirit of the place,
city identity and historic cityscape values that characterize industrial heritage in the social, cultural,
natural and built environmental systems.

AB - This paper deals with different contemporary approaches to the improvement of education in the area of research and preservation of built heritage,
according to the international charters and recommendations and different education traditions in the European countries. It aims to point out the similarities and
differences in this field, with a particular accent on the contemporary educational curriculum at the University of Belgrade - Faculty of Architecture. The intention is to underline the new directions at different levels of the education process.
The education of the future architects and conservators at European schools in the
past was directed primarily to the history of conservations and technical aspects of
historic buildings and areas protection, rather than to cultural identity, specific characters and values of built and intangible heritage. The greatest challenge of the contemporary education programs for conservation experts is: how to teach them to identify
national, international and multicultural connections and how to link tangible and intangible cultural heritage? The main goal of student’s education is: how to developed
the student’s skills and understanding of identity and traditional values of historical
sites and possibilities of its preservation as part of modern renewal projects. The integration of various disciplines and skills in education’s curricula is another challenge
in the conservation experts’ education improvement.

AB - In the last decades, the development of Belgrade has had a negative effect with regard to
the industrial heritage built in the 19th and early 20th century. In order to stop this tendency
and to demonstrate a will to achieve further sustainable development, it is necessary to
redefine the approach to the protection of the Belgrade industrial zones, creating a new one
for urban and spatial planning, taking into account all the specificities, tradition, authenticity
and identity. With all the reconstructions and inadequate changes in the city industrial
zones, particularly along the Sava and Danube banks, the historical cityscape, with its
characteristic morphology and typology, is gradually fading away.
The education process for the students of architecture, the future builders, provides
possibilities to comprehend the problems of the city's industrial heritage protection, its
historical and urban context, its genesis and cultural and architectural values. Furthermore,
it also provides possibilities of comparing different approaches in its presentation and
modern utilization.
This paper will present a search for possibilities of protecting the “Bajloni” Brewery in
Belgrade, its presentation and inclusion in the modern way of life. It was a part of the
master's academic program at the University of Belgrade - Faculty of Architecture. Through a
designing process, the students put an accent on comprehensive investigations of its entire
history: various changes in its structure, from the middle of the 19th century to the present
day. The goal was to define a sustainable solution that would protect all the development
stages of the complex. On the other hand, the idea was to make the complex active and
useful once again and to reintegrate it in its immediate surroundings. Consequently, the
students proposed a number of modern cultural, educational and artistic uses of the
complex, which would be in correlation with its character and significance, thus providing a
way of achieving an active future.

AB - The paper examines the work of Aleksandar Deroko at the University of Belgrade’s Faculty of Architecture and the inclusion of his rich personal knowledge about the vernacular architecture in the study programme, which he gained from long-term field research. As an assistant professor, he introduced the interpretation of vernacular architecture in the course on Byzantine and Old Serbian Architecture in 1929. After the study programme reform in 1935, a new course – named Old Serbian Architecture – was established, with one semester dedicated to the medieval monumental architecture and the second to rural and urban houses. In 1945/46 academic year, the course was renamed Vernacular Architecture and it incorporated medieval and vernacular architecture of the former Yugoslavia. Practical assignments dealt more with vernacular architecture and, through them the student’s discovered the fundamental principles and methods of the vernacular construction. The goal of the studies was for students to comprehend and adopt basic traditional canons of construction and apply them to their own projects of cooperative centres, countryside schools, monasteries, etc. Through illustrations the paper will present, till now unpublished, student projects from the archives of Belgrade’s the Faculty of Architecture’s office for the architectural heritage of Serbia.

AB - The Republic of Serbia has one inscribed ancient and four medieval sites on the UNESCO
World Heritage List. The World Heritage Committee placed the church of the Holy Virgin of Ljeviška in Prizren and the Patriarchate of Peć Monastery, Dečani Monastery and
Gračanica Monastery on the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2006 due to difficulties in
their preservation and management, as well as for the damage they suffered during ethnic conflicts. Pursuant to the UN resolution 1244, they are currently in the territory under
the control of United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK). The Committee recommended
Serbia to work with UNESCO and UNMIK programmes and with the Provisional Institutions of Self-Government in Kosovo for the purpose of protection of this World Heritage
site. However, in addition to these monuments, there are over 1500 holy places (monasteries, churches, cemeteries) in Kosovo and Metohija, which testify to the century-long
presence of the Serbian people and Orthodox religion. Over the course of the history,
they suffered multiple times as a consequence of wars and political turmoil, which has
been confirmed by international missions (UNESCO and the Council of Europe). With
the aim of preserving and protecting the monasteries, the need for the establishment of
protection zones was emphasized, which was specifically presented in provision V of the
Ahtisaari Plan for religious heritage. Due to its inclusion into the international system of
protection and monitoring and by means of WHS, in the immediate future, it is necessary
to restart the talks on how this cultural heritage could be understood as a key element
in establishing better cultural relations between Serbian and Albanian people. Through
their adequate preservation, improvement and management, within world heritage, they
become sites of significance for interpretation and presentation of cultural diversity, promotion of local and regional values, studies and education of the young, interethnic and
intercultural dialogue etc. In this sense, the paper examines the possibilities of improvement of the current state of their protection and presentation by way of integration of
international, national and local protection, understanding this area as a specific cultural
landscape.

AB - Marking the 100th anniversary of the founding of Bauhaus, one
of the leading and most in uential modernist art schools, which,
despite its short period of activity (1919-1933), paved the way
for the new artistic, theoretical and social toponyms through its
educational system, this text collects and exposes the specic
and complex echoes created by designers, artists and architects
from the Yugoslav cultural areas. The subject of this paper is
related to a group of students from the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats
and Slovenians (from 1929, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia) who
studied architecture, textile design, photography and the ne
arts at the Bauhaus in the period 1924-1932. Education at the
Bauhaus, political context, as well as work in various prestigious
architectural bureaus or individual design practices were of
utmost importance in forming the ideological frameworks of
the Yugoslav Bauhaus students’ production. In other words,
the text seeks to illustrate the complex relationships between
the individual poetics of the Yugoslav students at the Bauhaus
and the historical moment in which they acted. The aim of the
research is to determine the cultural and social positions of their
work through relating the aesthetic reading of artistic practices,
concise review of the socio-historical context and individual
cases of Yugoslav students. The research methodology is

AB - Through the teaching process, students of architecture have the opportunity to examine the problem of preserving the industrial heritage of Belgrade, its historical and urban context, the creation, development, cultural, urban and architectural values, as well as examining possibilities and comparing different approaches to its presentation and modern use. The goal was to devise sustainable solutions which will preserve the cultural and historical values, authenticity and integrity of the Pantelic Foundry complex on the one hand and, on the other hand, provide for its revitalization and quality integration into the immediate urban environment, which, despite the care and neglect preserved certain elements of a recognizable historical setting. Through their proposals, the students of Foundry 'Pantelić' have fulfilled numerous contemporary cultural, educational and artistic contents that are related to its character and significance, and provide it with an active life in the future. Through this study, a contribution was given to the research of the development of industrial architecture of Belgrade, but also the design of the possibility of revitalization and sustainable development.

AB - The Belgrade Waterfront area along the Sava and the Danube rivers has a large number of abandoned industrial buildings that have significant values that need to be preserved and revitalized. Some steps in this direction have already been made and some industrial buildings represent significant premises in the tourist offer of the city. There are also listed cultural and historical units of outstanding and great value, such as the Belgrade Fortress and Kosančićev venac, which are the main element of historical and cultural identity of town are also important potential for the future positioning of the city of Belgrade as European tourist top destination.
In the last decades some development projects has had a negative effect with regard to the industrial heritage of Belgrade and the historical cityscape, with its characteristic morphology and typology, is gradually fading away. In order to stop this tendency and demonstrate a will to achieve further sustainable development, it is necessary to redefine the approach to the protection of industrial zones, creating a new one for urban and spatial planning, taking into account all the values, tradition, authenticity and identity.
The paper will analyse possibilities to comprehend the problems of the city industrial heritage protection, its historical and urban context, its genesis and cultural and architectural values. Furthermore, possibilities of different approaches in presentation and modern utilization of the abandoned and ruined Belgrade industrial heritage will be investigated, in order to improve tourism development. Its specific cultural values and character have been taken as the basis of its future preservation and presentation as important cultural heritage and the part of the city identity and historic cityscape. In planning practice regeneration is most often driven by economic interests, while preservation of meaning and memory of place are neglected.
In the present tourist offer of Belgrade the Savamala area was profiled as the top city's nightlife destination. The Beton Hall area, as well as many other old industrial buildings and warehouses, are quickly and spontaneously transformed into galleries, restaurants and hostels for young people. With the accelerated realization and construction of the "Belgrade on the water" project, a political paradigm of today economic grow of Belgrade, the Savamala spaces become too expensive to rent and the alternative independent cultural scene and tourist offer are forced to move on the Dorćol and Danube coast areas. The focus of analyze will be on the contemporary proposals for reactivation of Belgrade Waterfronts and its implementation. The question is: How the tourism market trends affect the cultural heritage protection policy and whether processes of industrial heritage reuse should be spontaneous or imposed?

AB - Exploration of possibilities of protection, rehabilitation and envision of sustainable
strategies for development of industrial areas and buildings are important topics which
have dominated in the sphere of theoretical and practical work in the field of protection of
industrial heritage in the last decades. The focus is not only on their physical protection but
also on the broader issues related to the contemporary reuse as places with cultural and
tourism potentials. That is important for urban and economic development of the industrial
areas, but that need to be in accordance with preservation of integrity and authenticity of
the place.
In the last decades, development of Belgrade has had a negative effect with regard to the
industrial heritage built in the late 19th and early 20thcentury. The lack of understanding
of preservation of elements which possess technological value as evidence of a certain
level of development of technological culture as well as intangible heritage connected to
the life and labour of workers is observed as the foremost problem. In order to stop this
tendency and demonstrate a will to achieve further sustainable development, it is necessary
to redefine the approach to the protection of Belgrade industrial zones, creating a new one
for urban and spatial planning, taking into account all the values, tradition, authenticity
and identity. With provided reconstructions and inadequate changes in the city industrial
zones, particularly along the Sava River bank, the historical cityscape, with its characteristic
morphology and typology, is gradually fading away.
A more active cooperation between Serbia and The International Committee for the
Conservation of the Industrial Heritage (TICCIH) as well as the ratification of The Nizhny Tagil
Charter for The Industrial Heritage (2003) would definitely contribute to a better approach
to the preservation of authenticity and integrity of industrial complexes within their
repurpose and changes demanded by new, contemporary features, so that national and
local institutions could take upon themselves the obligation to follow certain procedures and
approaches in the protection of industrial heritage.

abstract = "Exploration of possibilities of protection, rehabilitation and envision of sustainable
strategies for development of industrial areas and buildings are important topics which
have dominated in the sphere of theoretical and practical work in the field of protection of
industrial heritage in the last decades.
Charter for The Industrial Heritage (2003) would definitely contribute to a better approach
to the preservation of authenticity and integrity of industrial complexes within their
repurpose and changes demanded by new, contemporary features, so that national and
local institutions could take upon themselves the obligation to follow certain procedures and
approaches in the protection of industrial heritage.",

AB - The important political and social changes in Serbia in the early
21st century started a process of democratisation, establishing
closer ties with Europe, which contributed to intensified efforts
for ratifying international conventions in the field of heritage protection
and management from 2007 onwards.1 However, despite
positive efforts, the protection and preservation of the cultural
heritage in Serbia still show signs of a transitional phase with
many of the general problems well-known in the former Eastern
European countries, as well as specific conditions which are the
result of recent political conflicts in the region, presenting a risk
to the preservation of heritage. In addition, the cultural heritage
in Serbia is also exposed to quite specific risks connected with an
extremely acute economic crisis, which marked all activities of
the heritage protection service during the 1990s. This is reflected
in the problems of collaboration between official institutions and
civil organisations. A crucial problem is non-compliance of the
current Law on Cultural Properties from 19942 with international
recommendations, and there is an urgent need to revise this act...

AB - In the first part of the chapter analyzed the legal and institutional context in the field of environment, spatial and urban planning and constructions in Serbia and its relation to the cultural heritage. The interest in the field of cultural heritage has long history – from early 19th century, but the modern approach to the cultural heritage protection is developed after the WWII. The protection of cultural and natural heritage is based on the Venice Charter (1964) and international conventions and recommendations, adopted in the late twentieth century and in more recent times. As the one of the most important international documents for future protection and improvement of cultural heritage today in Serbia is implemented the Council of Europe Faro Convention (2005), which offers ways to help the national, regional or local authorities and the civil society in general to establish an integrated approach to the preservation of cultural heritage as a basic element for future sustainable development. Sustainable planning and management of settlements are in the competence of the central and local authorities, and regulated by The Law on Planning and Construction (2009) and The Spatial plan of the Republic of Serbia (2010). The second part of chapter elaborate the recent actions and efforts in regeneration of rural heritage areas, as part of the overall economic and social development, based on an integration of rural areas into regional and urban planning processes, as well as economic, social and cultural policies. According the international methodology established by Council of Europe during the realization of The Regional Program by Cultural and Natural Heritage in South East Europe the Local Development Pilot Project Resava-Mlava were implemented on the territory of Municipalities Despotovac and Žagubica. The methodology which was used in the project involves the inclusion of local inhabitants in the form of various workshops. Among others institutions, in the research process of exploring and proposing a new approaches and models for heritage activation as a part of sustainable development of the region, professors and students of the Faculty of Architecture University of Belgrade were involved. The student’s projects successfully achieved their goal – to strengthen the awareness of the population of the heritage value as important resource for future sustainable development, as well as to provide municipal authorities with new, fresh ideas that can connect heritage protection with improvement of living condition. This provides a basis for elaboration of development strategy for this area in future.
