Villa Pavlović and the Dissolution of Gold

AB - The paper offers a theoretical basis for understanding the design methodology of the Villa Pavlović project (by the Belgrade-based architecture studio NEO arhitekti). The theoretical analysis of the design process focuses on the issue of form. The initial idea to build a 50-meter swim lane in the basement gave the house an elongated form, but was ultimately not realised. The moment the form lost its main function, its finitude became a problem that had to be overcome for the design process to continue. By reflecting on the theoretical problems of teleology and time, the text indirectly explains the applied methodology for the destabilisation of the created form. In that sense, a metaphor of dissolution of gold describes the design process, potentially understood as opposite to morphogenesis.

Philosophy “/” Architecture: Against l’informe

AB - From the linguistic aspect, “/” does not represent the concept for “both.” Instead, it refers to the field of alternatives between “two;” therefore, it excludes absolute conjunction. Concerning the process of design of the architectural object, I will try to explain the successive morphogeneses of the architectural form and the formless through which we generate a specific resistance of architecture to philosophy and vice versa. The architectural object is immanent to the formless in order to stop time, that is, its own finitude (end). Thus, the formless refers to what negates form as the principle of stable order and harmonious continuity and opposes form in its material becoming. This opposition to the own materialization of the object represents a metaphor for the desire for aesthetics that includes a non-representational (philosophical) dimension. The formless introduces a conceptual dimension to architecture, which is why I associate formless with the process of the creation of an object at the same time as its disappearance. In addition, according to Didi-Huberman, formlessness is not a rejection of form but precisely the possibility of reaching figuration. When the form dissolves into the formless and the formless changes into the form, the architectural concept becomes “burdened” by its own negativity, the desire for a non-substantial dynamic l’informe, and also the desire for figures that contain something non-imaginable. In this regard, l’informe methodologically belongs to philosophy because it deconstructs the materiality of the architectural object. However, paradoxically, it can also serve as a design of architectural figures. These states of the impossibility of absolute conjunction of philosophy and architecture create contingencies for new architectural concepts.

Philosophy of Architectural Figures

Vesnić, Snežana

TY - CONF
AU - Vesnić, Snežana

UR - https://raf.arh.bg.ac.rs/handle/123456789/1988
AB - Following Lyotard’s deconstruction of the opposition between the discursive and the figural, the
construction “philosophy of architectural figures” would include the intention to depart from the
problem of order between the two. If, instead of the question what is discursive in the figural or
what is figural of the discursive, the question of the “whole” is asked, then the meaning of the
position “between” the discourse and the figure – the discursive content and the figural materiality
– would be found in what resists (discursive and/or figural) representation. Architecturally
speaking, we can always talk about the conceptual materiality or the projected immateriality of
architectural figures. The figure tends to elude discourse or mere representation through the
philosophy of concepts. But it also insists on the simultaneous presence of the textual. The
play between the materiality of language (which cannot be reduced to the phenomenological)
and the certain phenomenology of the figure (which cannot be fully translated into linguistic
concepts) is close to “desire” itself. More precisely, it becomes the most extreme form of desire.
The idea to speak simultaneously about the absence of the figurative in figuration and the textual
presence by the “body of words” – through a series of short sequences, that is, figures – is close
to Lyotard’s comma between the discourse and figure. By dividing or linking the two words, this
comma introduces an element of “incommensurability” that seeks to insinuate the radicality that
allowed the term “figure” to enter the discourse. On the other hand, placing a comma begins the
deconstruction of the word figure. This is why we construct sequences with “commas” that do not
aim to explain anything but to inspire philosophers to see architectural figures. At the same time,
these sequences open up the possibility for the architect to assign movement to architectural
figures through the body of words. The idea to use text for confirming architectural possibility
of the final materiality of the architectural concept at the same time represents an opportunity
for philosophy to explore the materiality of words. Invoking what cannot be represented, the
figural destabilizes the boundaries of the representable, that is, the boundaries of the discursive,
striving to finally merge with it.

Time and Technology of the Architectural Concept: (Sur)réalité Virtuelle

AB - In this text, I thematize the creation of the (architectural) concept and creation with
the concept, in order to present a new argument that the production of the object of
architecture is a consequence of the creation by concept. The concept translates one
form of reality into another. In these deconstructions of reality and the object, we find
the potential for ever-novel creation and an always new reality. In the changes of modes
of reality, the object always has a new reality. The non-identity created among various
forms of existence of a single object creates new ‘potency’ for new objective reality. In
the text, I present the phrase “surréalité virtuelle” to express my idea of the creation of the
new conceptual potential at the point of absence, lack, or inexistence of the architectural
object.

And. The Invention (Projection) of the Third

AB - My intention is to distinguish between the new and novelty. Using the impossibility of projective difference defined (made, determined) by the other and the third, I will elaborate a deconstruction of the creation of the “new”. As the other appears from the possibility of difference, invention is a discovery (in what already exists) of the other. If Derrida placed the appearance of the other outside the methodological procedure, thus projecting (designing) deconstruction above all as a “metaphysical project” with explicitly phenomenological projection, we can claim that, upon the invention of the other (the new), we must also produce “the third”, as inspiration of real creation (novelty). Invention is not the same as creation, but refers to alteration (movement, change) of what already exists through qualitative openness to other readings. The other is the projection of openness, or the other is what contains a “projection”. Distinct from the “new”, novelty is pure creation, that is, it refers to the concept. Thus, the other could be said to belong to the project, that is, it is a projection that constructs a new object, opens it and places it into reality. “The Third” is an unstable position that emerges from the constant tension between what exists and what is thought. This uncertainty could manifest “something” entirely novel, beyond projective geometry, which aims to oppose deconstruction with the “perfect” or “ideal” structure. The new is thus equated with invention, that is, the project; while novelty relates to the concept. Since the concept mediates between architecture and philosophy, and as novelty is essentially the future of the discipline, then the concept – the conjunction AND – contains the contingency of the third: the possibility of novelty for the new.

By introducing the philosophical text into the process of architectural design, this project aims to examine the relation between architectural concept (philosophy), architectural design (technology) and architectural project (process). Furthermore, this research will attempt to assemble an architectural dictionary of technical terms and notions, and then apply them to deconstruct architectural concepts.

precizirati iskustvima arhitektonske prakse i teorije. Pokazat ću ne samo zašto je arhitektu
potrebna filozofija nego i obratno, zašto arhitekt i njegova praksa mogu pomoći filozofima.
AB - The answer to the question of whether there is a tension between the insight that the concept of dispositif reveals to us the variability of objective reality and the theory that the design of an architectural object depends on the various elements captured by the concept of dispositif The primary thesis of this paper is that the application of dispositifs in the field of architecture helps us to better understand this concept – from Michel Foucault to Gilles Deleuze to Giorgio Agamben. In other words, the paper presents arguments that the unstable philosophical concept of dispositif can be made more precise through the experiences of architectural practice and theory. On this occasion, I would like to show not only why architects need philosophy, but also, conversely, how an architect and his practice can help philosophers.

The Conceptual Act of (Non)Instrumentality

AB - This paper aims at hypothesizing that the issue of technology could never be con sidered separate from the creative act. We develop the hypothesis starting from Heidegger’s
opposition of technology and the poietic, which we interpret through the dialectic between the
performative and constative function of the hand. To overcome the Heideggerian problem of
Enframing, we introduce the question of singularity inherent in every poietic activity which,
however, does not result in conceiving technology as an instrument. When defining the nature
of such poietic singularization we employ Spinoza’s concept of an inadequate idea – an idea
that involves its cause but does not explain it. The inherent negativity of the inadequate idea
generates the sphere in which the new appears as radical otherness. But in order to produce the
new, that is, to perform it, technology has to be conceptualized and thus made an instrument
– a singular instrument of the creative act.

The empty concept: (sur)realism of the virtual

AB - This dual title refers to the very production of and with the architectural concept. The technology of translating the architectural object from one form of existence into another, in successive and simultaneous projections, comprises the hyper-specificity of the methodology of the architectural project. '(Sur)Realism of the Virtual' indicates a possibility for a different understanding of the terms "virtual" and "realism" in the sense of destabilizing the "reality of the virtual' and introducing the novel into the very notion of the virtual. René Magritte explicitly demonstrated that the object never matches its projection, just as words do not match the text they explain. (Sur)Realism of the virtual refers to my idea of creating a new conceptual potential at the point of absence, lack or inexistence of the architectural object.

In thematizing actualization or realization of the empty concept, I follow the ideas of Thomas Aquinas that all substances seek their own perfection and everything is directed towards their final end: a fully realized state ofexistence or actuality. A virtual field represents the necessary conditions under which real experience is actualized, such that actualization and the object belong to the virtual. All these relations explain processes of production of the architectural object and show nearly mathematically the differences among the modalities of the object's reality across diverse status: potential, act, movement, and force.

Arhitektonski koncept: objekt stvarnosti i subjekt iluzije

TY - BOOK

PY - 2020

Filozofske teorije, koncepcije i fragmentarni teorijski korpusi
oslonci su ovog arhitektonskog razmatranja. U arhitektonskom
potpuno razumele njegove inspiracije.
prevazilazi svoje vreme.

AB - The concept features as a vital element in architectural protocol and its vocabulary. If
architecture and philosophy are defined as creation of concepts, then they are the terra
nullius shared by both disciplines. By distinguishing the architectural concept from its
philosophical counterpart, this paper analyzes the former as an entity that animates
and directs a project as the documental prefiguration of an architectural object. In a
more radical move, we consider architecture itself as a concept, that is, what makes
architecture what it is and what this discipline can become tomorrow. In addition to
decisively participating in the process of generating an object yet to be constructed (the
fetus of a building), on a correlative level, the concept has an essential role in theoretical
self-thematization of architecture and guards the future of the architectural profession
as an autonomous intellectual discipline.

What Is an Architectural Concept? The “Concept” of Deleuze and “Project” of Eisenman

AB - Two great theories – one in philosophy, one in architecture – emerge nearly simultaneously in the twentieth century: Gilles Deleuze’s understanding of the “concept,” that is, defining philosophy as an activity that produces concepts, and Peter Eisenman’s idea of the “project” as a platform, “position,” or “theory” of an architect. My intention is to suggest and problematize the idea of the concept as “capacity” or “potentiality” implying the production of a multitude of “concepts” or varying “conceptions.” Deleuze’s great significance for architecture of this century allowed for the construction of the “concept” as “author’s potential,” the source of activity and creative architectural acts. An architectural concept, determined in the course of the text, and thanks to which architectural terminology is redefined, could potentially be quite useful in philosophy and theory of the subject.

The Philosophical Platform of the Architect. Why Philosophers Make Such Good Drawings?

AB - Theoretical interpretations and attempts at instrumentalisation
of the ties and exchanges between philosophy and architecture
have mostly been directed at questions of language or the
institutionalisation of the discipline of architecture. In this text,
I suggest a different approach to philosophical engagement
in architecture: a simultaneous use in the methodology of
the architectural project and constitution of a philosophy of
architecture, not only as a question of interdisciplinary exchange,
but as an integral part of comprehensive architectural processes,
with philosophy still maintaining its original authenticity. My
approach is twofold: explain the methodology and delineate
its framework, but also raise the question what is an architect’s
philosophical platform. To that end, I will attempt to elaborate
three models: 1) the first delves partially into the fields of fiction
and illusion, and in it the architect adopts the role (position) of the
philosopher, 2) the second model is the architectural engagement
of philosophical notions, and 3) the third is the use of philosophical
concepts in the creation of architectural ones. Corresponding to
each, I will suggest the activity of “repetition of difference” as a
possibility of creation of the authentic architectural concept.

Belgrade skyline: continuity, paradoxes & desires

AB - There are 800 towers in Belgrade, mostly built in the 20th century, at the time of
Modernism. In relation to the prominent tradition of their construction, the current
situation can be defined as a paradox of continuity – which can be expressed through
two contradictions. The first contradiction is related to the comparison of the number
of high-rise structures completed during the industrial development and the fact that
after 1990 the number of realized structures of eight storeys or higher is insignificant.
The second contradiction is related to the ratio of the height of the tallest existing
structures and the maximum height allowed for the new structures, as defined by the
current normative acts. In this context Belgrade has a tradition of high-rise
construction, yet at present there is no awareness, and no professional or social
consensus on the need for the high-rise developments. The restraints of height and
land zoning for high-rise development are not only constraining factors in strategic
planning and expansion of the city, but they create an economic problem by opposing
the very concept of prosperity. Additionally, in terms of the cultural context, they limit
the possibilities for fulfilment of Belgrade’s contemporary demands and its iconic
future. The high-rise structures can be translated into a tool used to emphasize the
clear intentions of progress. The city turns into a metaphor for economic and cultural
status - between the visual symbol and the symbol of power. Most of all, from the
architectural point of view, it becomes the physical parameter of inventiveness,
knowledge, capacity, technical and overall achievements of a community. The
mythological capacity of such a situation can be simply translated into a necessity for
Belgrade to construct at least one extremely tall structure – a tower of no less than
150m high.
