AB  - This chapter examines how the representational museum politics creates a
system of meanings by defining socialism as the “other” in opposition to which the
new collective identity is in a process of constant reconstruction after the fall of the
Berlin Wall. Focusing on the work of one specific museum institution—the Museum
of Yugoslavia, known as the Museum of Yugoslav History until 2016—we discuss a
process of revalorizing socialism, communism, and Yugoslavia in present-day Serbia.
We place the work of this specific museum in the wider institutional, historical, and
artistic network of socialist Yugoslavia and contemporary Serbia.

predstavljali su paradigmatske primere kreiranja i širenja novog koncepta identiteta u javnom prostoru socijalističke Jugoslavije. Proces društvenog strukturiranja, političke legitimizacije, ali i nacionalne identifikacije je definisan između ostalog i kroz izložbene politike navedenih muzejskih
institucija. Njihov značaj u stvaranju kulturne politike socijalističke Jugoslavije u vreme hladnog rata je svedočio o dinamičnom društvu koje je karakterisala stalna kompeticija brojnih socijalnih, političkih i kulturnih agenata. Različite načine stvaranja i prikazivanja istorijskih narativa prisutne u programskim konceptima muzejskih institucija moguće je sažeti u dve paradigme. Prva, uslovno prepoznata kao: stalnost i dugovečnost, definisala je predstavu izuzetnosti i jedinstvenosti jugoslovenskog društva stvarajući istorijske kontinuitete kroz vreme i prostor. Druga, koja je sažeta u pojmovima: povezivanje i premošćavanje, u javnom prostoru je ideološki i politički objedinjavala i instrumentalizovala različite kulturne i političke realitete. Izlažući selektovano kulturno nasleđe
tri razmatrana muzeja su aktivno učestvovala u ideološkom konstruisanju identiteta i u procesu „uprostoravanja“ političke moći, snažeći viziju jugoslovenskog društva kao jedinstvenog kulturnog i političkog medijatora.

AB  - “Places of memory” ― places that create and articulate meanings of the past, represent formative issue of collective memory and identity building processes. These places encounter diverse discourses, which reflect different perceptions of historical events, personalities and phenomena, being a substantive matter of ideological narratives, patterns of value systems and political practices in the society. Among great number of remarkable topics that could be designated as “places of memory” ― from historical data, celebrations and commemorations, monuments, prominent artifacts set in public, historical or mythical figures; to sport clubs and societies, food, entertainment and festivities ― among all these subjects, museums are basic elements in “spatialization” of ideologies and political projects. That is the reason why analysis of museums, their conceptual framework, exhibition policies and, above all, their contextual references, represent a key for understanding complex processes of identification that characterize contemporary societies.
	To focus the Belgrade museums as particular case study of historical culture in Serbia, enables thorough a survey of both interpretations and evaluations of historical and cultural heritage, Yugoslav experiences, tradition of wars, rebels and uprisings, and so on. It is likely that ubiquitous deficiency of permanent exhibitions in majority of Belgrade museums represents symptomatic feature of prevailing concept of identity in Serbia, which still lacks rational relations with historical discourses. Such analysis reveals historical controversies and inefficient attempts for their understanding and overcoming. Finally, it is important to trace and display the reasons why Belgrade museums have failed to exercise and govern process of constructing a consensual image of the past, to recognize and promote the art of interpretation, as well as of a dialogue that surely represents the basic issue of multicultural and multi directional identity in any contemporary society.

AB  - Despite the fact that it represents an urban focal point of the city, Slavija Square has remained a paradigm of ideological and physical marginality in Belgrade's recent history. It's complex ideological heritage, the systems of values that was implicit to the area over the course of history, have proven complex and fraught with conspicuous problems. The square has become one of the central markers of a tradition that for many reasons can today be considered as unwanted and problematic.

National Museums in Serbia: A Story of Intertwined Identities

AB  - In our paper, we are analyzing five museums as the comparative objects of research aimed at
exploring the processes of identity- and state-building in Serbia over the course of the last two
centuries. These museums are: the National Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the
Museum of Yugoslav History, the Museum of African Art, and the Museum of the Victims of
Genocide. We defined these museums in terms of the official interpretational discourses and the
roles they perform in society both in synchronic and diachronic terms — the latter in particular
often being expressed by a range of meanings and functions. These museums have been chosen
for closer examination because they represent rather paradigmatic examples of both the
institutions and narrative-producers, within the process of identity and state building in Serbia,
which have been developed over the course of last two centuries. We analyzed the periods of
nineteenth century nation-state building, as well as the twentieth century formation of Yugoslavia
and the construction of socialism. Special attention, however, was put on contemporary Serbian
society and the relationships between the museum protagonists and museum narratives. Surely,
an integral part of the research includes a number of changes and transitions within museum
policies and narratives, along with hidden, ‘deaf’ historical events or cultural phenomena that
have not been represented in Serbian museums so far.
The main analytical points and conclusions of the research are: the national museums in
Serbia have played important roles within the complexity of representational discourse, which
included the nation-building processes. Museum practices constructed national identity as a
multifaceted entity, being based on a variety of perspectives: historical, archaeological,
ethnological, anthropological, artistic and geographical. However, the museums have produced
changeable visions of collective identity, mainly as a result of ideological and political context.
Yet museum practices have not merely reflected certain ideological frameworks and political
realities, but rather represented constitutive elements of ideological and political context.
Secondly, our analysis is based on a wider understanding of the term ‘national museum’ and
the explanation of the museum network in Serbia, as a complex, interdependent system of
policies and narratives, which have a crucial role in the process of identity-building in Serbia. The
network has been structured according to the simultaneity of several metanarratives: revolution,
state-building, modernization/Europeanization, national authenticity/indigenousness, etc.
Finally, our analysis shows that museum policies and narratives have been based on three
general paradigms related to nation- and state-construction processes, each of them being heavily
dependent upon interpretational discourse and firmly anchored to ideological and political
context. The first one is the paradigm of exceptionalism and uniqueness; the second is the one
that supports a rather mediatory concept of national identity, and the third paradigm establishes
new interpretations of different historical processes.

AB  - "Mesta secanja", odnosno mesta prikazivanja i označavanja prošlosti, predstavljaju osnov oko koga se artikuliše kolektivno pamćenje i izgrađuju individualni i grupni identiteti. U njima se susreću brojni (ne retko čak i suprotstavljeni) diskursi koji reflektuju različite percepcije prošlih dogadjaja, ličnosti i pojava i čine sadržinu ideoloških narativa, okvire društvenih sistema vrednosti i političkog delovanja. U dugačkom nizu prepoznatljivih simbola, označenih terminom “mesta sećanja” (od istorijskih datuma, praznika, spomenika, znacajnih umetnickih dela, istorijskih i mitskih licnosti, do sportskih drustava, hrane, zabave, festivala...) muzeji predstavljaju ključne elemente “uprostoravanja” ideologija i političkih projekata. Upravo zbog toga analiza programskih koncepata muzeja predstavlja ključ za razumevanje načina na koji se odvija proces samodefinisanja društva.
Analiza muzeja Beograda kao specifična studija slučaja, omogućava nam da istražimo različita tumačenja i vrednovanja istorijskog i kulturnog nasleđa, jugoslovenskog iskustva, ratnih i ustaničkih tradicija u Srbiji. U prilogu koji ćemo predstaviti, tragaćemo za načinima prepoznavanja i označavanja kulturno “drugih i drugačijih”, obeležavanja ideoloških ili političkih neprijatelja i glorifikovanja saveznika. Isticanjem simptomatičnog nepostojanja stalnih postavki najznačajnijih muzeja u Beogradu, ukazaćemo na istorijske kontroverze i neuspešne pokušaje njihovog rešavanja i razumevanja. Najzad, pokušaćemo da istražimo razloge zbog kojih su muzeji propustili priliku da izvrše značajniji uticaj na proces konstruisanja istorijskih predstava, prepoznavanje i promovisanje razlicitih tumačenja i afirmaciju dijaloga kao osnove izgradnje savremenog multikulturnog identiteta u današnjoj Srbiji.

Prostori selektovanih memorija: Staro sajmište u Beogradu i sećanje na Drugi svetski rat

AB  - Memories of the WWII are crucial to process of forging Serbian national identity. Respectable parts of this process are places of commemoration of the WWII. These are essential not only for constructing and transforming advisable forms of memorialization, but also for constructing value systems, which govern Serbian society. Belgrade topography is distinguished by several important interconnected places that stand as War memorials. Their interconnected relations reflect complex and symptomatic attitudes toward victims of the War, at the same time being witness of eligible system of national, social and moral standards. Case study of the Staro sajmište (the Old Fairground) in Belgrade is rather illustrative, for social semiotics of the place ― which used to be a Jewish concentration camp ― was generally based on certain, but profoundly tendentious system of both remembrance and oblivion, and of substitution of memory. Seen in comparative perspective with central commemorative places ― and that is, surely, the Memorial of Jajinci ― the places that memorialize Jewish victims of WWII (the Old Fairground, Sephardic Synagogue in Dorćol, Memorials in the Jewish Cemetery and in Topovske Šupe) testify to rigidity of consciously exclusive and totalitarian concept of collective identity. More to the point, recent psychical interventions that took place on these diverse places of memory, different layouts that have predetermined courses of events and functions of these memorials, along with constantly changing interpretation of the meaning of these memorials have one thing in common. These reveal a fact that changeable spatialization of memory of WWII is fundamental not only to unstable and shifting relationships toward recent past, but also to process of creating and stabilizing the borders of collective identities in Serbia.
AB  - Sećanje na Drugi svetski rat predstavlja jednu od najvažnijih instanci u procesu generisanja sadržaja srpskog nacionalnog identiteta. Važan deo toga procesa jesu prostori komemoracije žrtava Drugog svetskog rata, mesta putem kojih su konstruisani i transformisani ne samo poželjni oblici sećanja, već i izgrđivani dominantni sistemi vrednosti unutar srpskog društva. U topografiji Beograda posebno se izdvaja nekoliko ključnih mesta sećanja na Drugi svetski rat koje je važno dovesti u međusobnu vezu. Njihove relacije dobro odslikavaju složenu i simptomatičnu prirodu odnosa prema problemu žrtava rata, ali i prema prihvatljivom sistemu nacionalnih, društvenih i moralnih standarda. Primer Starog sajmišta u Beogradu veoma je ilustrativan, budući da je značenje toga mesta ― nekadašnjeg koncentracionog logora za Jevreje ― u javnom prostoru mahom bilo zasnovano na kompleksnom sistemu sećanja, zaboravljanja i supstituisanja memorije. Staro sajmište, kao i drugi prostori sećanja na Drugi svetski rat koji se dovode u vezu sa jevrejskim žrtvama (Sefardska sinagoga na Dorćolu, Spomenik jevrejskim žrtvama fašizma na Jevrejskom groblju i Memorijal Topovske šupe), posmatrani u perspektivi odnosa prema drugim, centralnim mestima sećanja na rat (pre svega Spomen-parkom Jajinci), svedoče o rigidnom, tendenciozno isključivom i totalizujućem konceptu društvenog identiteta. Štaviše, savremene intervencije u fizičkoj strukturi i funkciji ovih memorijala, različiti planovi koji su odredili njihovu dalju sudbinu, kao i promena interpretacije njihove sadržine jasan su pokazatelj da je transformacija uprostoravanja sećanja na Drugi svetski rat temeljno značajan aspekt ne samo promenljivog i nestabilnog odnosa prema recentnoj prošlosti, već i procesa opcrtavanja granica kolektivnih identiteta u Srbiji.

AB  - Kao najznačajni sadržaj kolektivnih identifikacija svih jugoslovenskih društava Drugi svetski rat, odnosno njegova tumačenja, predstavljala su osnovu na kojoj su vršena povlačenja granica društvenih identiteta, uspostavljani fluidni odnosi između njih i konstruisani partikularni sadržaji
poželjnog istorijskog sećanja. Svaka interpretacija nosila je jasan i prepoznatljiv sistem vrednosti koji je učestvovao u permanentnoj aktuelizaciji kolektivnog identiteta i određivanju njegovih granica. U tom smislu čini se paradigmatičan Spomenik jevrejskim žrtvama fašizma, podignut unutar zidina jevrejskog groblja 1952. godine. Delo Bogdana Bogdanovića u krajnje formalnoj analizi moguće je tumačiti kao nastavak tradicije podizanja vojničkih spomenika unutar grobljanskih celina. Podignut na Sefardskom jevrejskom groblju u Beogradu, izolovan i sasvim skriven od pogleda, Spomenik jevrejskim žrtvama fašizma rečito svedoči o ambivalentnoj strukturi sećanja na Drugi svetski rat u Srbiji.

AB  - Kompleks Starog sajmišta jedno je od centralnih mesta sećanja u Beogradu. Izgradjen kao "sajam uzoraka" od strane eminentnih arhitekata Beogradske opoštine 1937. godine, ovaj prostor je funkcionisao kao koncentracioni logor u vreme Drugog svetskog rata, te kao sedište umetničkih ateljea u vreme socijalističke Jugoslavije. Danas je prostor Starog sajmišta sasvim marginalizovan, naseljen ljudima s margine društva – siromašnim stanovništvom koje je, poput nekadašnjih zatočenika koncentracionog logora, postalo sasvim nevidljivo. Zbog opšte zapuštenosi i potrebe da se i taj deo integriše u urbani prostor grada, Skupština grada Beograda usvojila je još 1992. godine Detaljni urbanistički plan spomeničkog kompleksa kojim se “postiže vraćanje celovitog izgleda prostoru Starog beogradskog sajmišta, kakav je bio u momentu pretvaranja u logor i istovremeno pruža mogućnost da se kompleks obnovi i u funkciji sajma uzoraka”. Tako ambivalentna formulacija, u kojoj se zapravo ne može razlučiti šta je prioritet rekonstrukcije u pogledu vrednosti, ponovljena je u Generalnom urbanističkom planu Beograda 2021, koji je Skupština grada Beograda usvojila u septembru 2003. godine. Sudeći po sve glasnijim zahtevima da se ovaj prostor obnovi kao mesto sećanja na žrtve Drugog svetskog rata i, posebno, na hiljade Beograđana koji su u njemu stradali samo zbog toga što im je identitet bio nepodban, prilika da se sloboda sećanja na holokaust i pravo na njegovo javno prikazivanje u Srbiji konačno ostvari sve je izvesnija.

Tako ambivalentna formulacija, u kojoj se zapravo ne može razlučiti šta je prioritet rekonstrukcije u pogledu vrednosti, ponovljena je u Generalnom urbanističkom planu Beograda 2021, koji je Skupština grada Beograda usvojila u septembru 2003. godine. Sudeći po sve glasnijim zahtevima da se ovaj prostor obnovi kao mesto sećanja na žrtve Drugog svetskog rata i, posebno, na hiljade Beograđana koji su u njemu stradali samo zbog toga što im je identitet bio nepodban, prilika da se sloboda sećanja na holokaust i pravo na njegovo javno prikazivanje u Srbiji konačno ostvari sve je izvesnija.",
