AB - This article addresses the contemporary framework of housing at the EU level in the era of the ‘Housing at the Centre’ approach. More specifically, the research focuses on mass housing neighbourhoods (MHN) as the leading pattern of urban transformation in European cities in the second half of the 20th century, with the intention being to decode the possibilities for its rehabilitation in line with integrated approaches. The article combines (1) a review-based and systematically-oriented approach, in order to provide a state of the art of EU design taxonomy related to the housing issue, and, more specifically, related to MHN, with (2) a comparative study between EU and national design taxonomies, in order to address their conditionality and possible mismatches. The research considers design taxonomy to gain a more comprehensive insight into the content and coherence between programme values and the relevant EU documents (declarations, statements, policy positions, resolutions, reports, communications, charters, action plans, opinions) related to the housing issue, or broader urban issues that include housing as the scope of observation. The taxonomy enables a conceptual methodological framework for a systematic, consistent, and complete description of key research relations. Accordingly, the specific objective of this article is to establish an evaluation framework for reprogramming of MHN based on the EU design taxonomy through (1) the development of the programming matrix for evaluation, which corresponds to the value-based architectural programming model; and (2) introducing Serbian national design taxonomy, in order to demonstrate the anticipation of design values based on the EU taxonomy within the local context. The results indicate the need to examine and test regulatory experimental settings through middle-out approaches, whose central research perspective will be built parallel and coherently through bottom-up inputs, created as the result of collaborative approaches at the community level, and top-down inputs which are the result of the strategic framework established in relation to priorities at the European level.

AB - In the vortex of the environmental and ecological crises, it is clear that the cosmopolitan
way of living is facing uncertainty with no easing in sight. Looking beyond the horizon at what
the aftermath will yield, it is quite clear that the meaning of urbanity has to be transformed; the
urban life has to support social and ecological well-being, and the city has to intertwine more
closely with nature. Therefore, wild urban woodlands (WUWs), often morphologically exclusive,
culturally contradictory, and biologically heterogeneous, are recognized together with the other
informal wilderness of the city as catalyzers of a newly constructed identity and the first line of
defense when the question of the socio-ecological resilience of the city is raised. The present study
focuses on how the biocultural diversity of WUWs can be stimulated by architecture and on which
principles and restorative components an architectural design should stand on. Taking War Island
on the river Danube, in the very heart of Belgrade, Serbia, as the particular case study, a specific
assignment was given to students of the Faculty of Architecture in Belgrade to affirm, recuperate,
and stipulate the relationship between the nature and the culture of the site. On the threshold of
interdisciplinarity, a net of coordinated values is set up based on a theoretical, analytic, and typomorphological approach, gathering the eco-cultural aspects, components, and characteristics of the
place. On the bases of the students’ research-based design propositions, the results show different
design paths promoting accessibility and security, restoring social responsibility and awareness, and
regaining the socio-ecological well-being of the place. The conclusions drawn from the study open
the perspective of the alliance between nature and culture through an architectural infrastructure
that heals the landscape and induces its therapeutic properties, enhancing the biocultural diversity of
the place and proclaiming a kind of hedonistic sustainability for the future life of cities.

AB - Mass housing neighbourhoods (MHN) represent the leading pattern of urban transformation and expansion in the second half of the 20th century, and accordingly evaluation, regeneration and redesign of the MHN represent a necessary and challenging task in the contemporary research context. In the practical scope of MHN rehabilitation, various holistic approaches and design strategies are identified that affirm both ecological transition and social transformation of these urban settings. However, the level of application of such approaches across Europe varies greatly, and requires research initiatives of a comparative nature that open a cross-geographical debate at the European level. Although there is a series of evidence-based studies that define the conceptual framework of MHN, i.e., large-scale housing settlements, through historical-interpretative and chronological analyses, the academic debate on practical and feasible MHN rehabilitation and their sustainable integration into the urban development of cities at European level is underdeveloped. The specific objective of this paper is to establish preliminary insights into the current level of MHN rehabilitation and to identify challenges for further actions through (1) a comparative analysis of MHN role models from the second half of 20th century, and through (2) insights from an implemented expert questionnaire. The research engages a comparative case study analysis as the primary method and analyses MHN in Germany (as a representative of Western Europe) and in the two ex-Yugoslav countries, North Macedonia and Serbia (as representatives of Eastern Europe). This research has highlighted the main obstacles and challenges for MHN rehabilitation and demonstrated the importance of a multiscale approach to MHN analysis, having in mind that through the distribution of design values at the analysed spatial levels (neighbourhood level, building level, and apartment level) the application of affirmative indicators within different design values group is recognised.

AB - This paper addresses the challenges of architectural higher education to cope with a state of continuous change within the relationship between heritage and sustainability. The initial assumption is that research activities based on design taxonomies—terms used in architectural discourse of heritage and sustainability—followed by fruitful analysis and discussion can contribute to the advancements in curricula design and development. Accordingly, the paper aims to develop a new methodological framework for addressing sustainability and heritage, enriching curricula design and assessment strategy. Data collection on identification and analysis of terms was carried out within the Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership titled Enhancing of Heritage Awareness and Sustainability of Built Environment in Architectural and Urban Design Higher Education (HERSUS). After the process of filtering, interpretation, and comparison of project findings, a three-fold comprehensive analysis was conducted: (a) learning outcome quantitative analysis, (b) cross-cutting analysis of spatial scales and course types, and (c) synthesis. The paper results in the methodological framework that reinforces different pedagogical approaches to heritage and sustainability derived as a result of the applied research process. The main conclusions are concerned with the applicability of the methodological framework, designed for the improvement of existing and development of new comprehensive courses and programme contents.

AB - This paper is built on the assumption that architecture is the establishment of the relationship between past and future, built and unbuilt, within the inherited and natural context and
in direct connection with the overall culture. Unlike a traditional approach to heritage generally
limited to considering only the visible values of the place, this research stands on the belief that, in
the context of heritage, the implementation and application of behavioral knowledge in architectural
discourse contributes to the intensification and enhancement of these relations. In accordance with
the need to re-examine existing and explore new forms of the relationship between future life of
heritage and social wellbeing, the main goal of the research is to examine the possibility of improving
this relationship through a value-based architectural programming methodological framework. This
paper was conducted through: (1) theoretical framework that intertwines environment–behavior
theories and architectural programming as the value-matrix methodology for the reuse of heritage;
(2) exploring the established framework through design results gathered within the design-based
studio on “heritage reprogramming” at the University of Belgrade—Faculty of Architecture with
a particular focus on the modernist architectural heritage; and (3) discussing the overall principles through the multiscale and value-based approach. The evaluation of the results indicates the
possibility of improving the social dimension of heritage protection and reuse, as well as the need
to shift the focus from exclusively material and formal values of heritage to social and cultural
aspects in accordance with the needs of contemporary society and culture. Results indicate that the
multidimensional nature of architectural programming methodological approach in the context of
modern heritage and, accordingly, the synergy of different programming values (environmental,
human, social, systemic, temporal, economic, aesthetic) provides sustainable access to heritage and
has the capacity to improve the social wellbeing of individual users but also of the wider community

AB - Over the past decade, urban housing typologies have evolved from being a feature of modern life to an essential postmodern issue, questioning future housing identities. One of the ways in which architecture can become engaged in this ever-changing process of urban regeneration is to challenge the inherited traditional housing typologies with the newly recognized values of contemporary lifestyle. This paper presents research and design aimed at exploring contemporary sustainable urban lifestyles as a resource for positioning housing structures as cultural urban infrastructure. The main focus of this study is design principles and strategies for generating future housing identities in accordance with sustainable urban development and sustainability of life in urban areas. It is about finding housing conceptual models for an interaction between housing and identity as a response to the impact of increased cities, changed lifestyles in contemporary cities and the requirements for the preservation of the city image and the public space within the housing areas in the city center. The main goal of this study is to understand whether and how an architectural design can preserve a sustainability of life within the city center and become a valuable agent of place identity in the process of urban regeneration. The paper indicates that the contemporary development of society requires a new architectural paradigm, in which lifestyle and architecture create a unique elastic open-ended system with the ability to adapt and change over time and throughout the place.

AB - The morphogenesis of the urban territory and its contact with the non-urbanized, natural environment of the wider metropolitan area distinguish issues of the synergy between landscape and spatial patterns in order to achieve their balance, optimization, and harmony. This chapter highlights the conceptual framework of landscape ecology as linking to place-based design approach for studying the synergy of landscape and housing spatial patterns in order to improve their integration in future perspective. The territory of the city of Belgrade is recognized as a specific spatial-morphological system that is a consequence of the urban-rural synergy between socialist housing settlements and environmental processes. The chapter points at the environmental and functional values of nature with a particular focus on housing typology in the process of urban planning and architectural design.

revision of extra-curricular learning model in the form of a
student workshop as an extended environment and a reflective
arena, and (2) towards generating workshop content aimed
at examining modernity in contemporary conditions of urban
transformation. The paper is structured in three parts. The
first part introduces the concept of an architectural workshop
with a discussion of general methodological perspectives that
shape this approach that takes place through three continuous
stages during which students develop the process of analytical
thinking, architectural programming and architectural design.
The second part of the paper contextually and conceptually
position the content of the workshop aimed at examining modernity
in contemporary conditions of urban transformation
between imagined, realized, and lived space. The third section
introduces the content of two student workshops as an illustrative
example of the implementation of methodology with

AB - The idea that multifunctional open spaces support sustainable urban development has been widely accepted in theory and intensively used in practice of urban planning and design. It is based on the assumption that multifunctional spaces bring a wider spectrum of environmental, social and economic benefits to urban areas. And yet, multifunctionality of space is still a vague and diffuse concept that needs further clarifications. Besides that, different academic disciplines understand and use this concept in different ways. This makes the application of the concept difficult to assess and manage in relation to different aspects of urban sustainability. Through the literature review, this paper analyses and compares how the concept of multifunctionality is used in various spatial disciplines (urban planning and design, landscape architecture) in order to better understand and relate its different dimensions, applications and expected benefits for sustainable development. Based on this, a new, relational and multidimensional conceptualisation of the multifunctionality of public open spaces is proposed for analysis and assessment of urban design solutions. It is further applied and discussed in relation to students projects from “Ecological urban design studio” from the University of Belgrade Faculty of Architecture, as visions for development of multifunctional public open spaces in modernist mass housing area of “Sava Blocks” in New Belgrade, Serbia.

WORK DESCRIPTION in English (max. 100 words or 6 rows):

The AMONG SCALES workshop is aimed at researching and systematizing the spatial and programmatic impulses of the new modernity of socialist residential settlements in the territory of the city of Belgrade, built on the basis of the Master Plans of 1950 and 1972, which established the contemporary urbanization of Belgrade. The main objective of the workshop is to look at current relational flows and gaps between urban and rural, architecture and nature, global flows and everyday life at the relevant spatial levels, from the level of comprehensive administrative territory of the city to single residential unit - scale 1: territory, scale 2: morphology, scale 3: typology, scale 4: program and scale 5: ambience. The workshop was attended by 67 students of bachelor, integrated and master studies divided into 18 teams. The result of the workshop is recognized on two levels - the first is a systematic chronological review of the construction of the residential settlements in Belgrade in the period 1945-1978 with the identification of the planning framework and the principal spatial-morphological and functional-conceptual concepts, while the second part of the contribution is reflected in the created ''identity cards'' of individual residential settlements through the identification of recognized phenomena at the analyzed spatial levels.

Formati za urbani život - porodična kuća u savremenom gradu

TY - BOOK

Verujem da u reanimaciji urbane kuće leži ključ unapređenja održivosti savremenog gradskog centra, jer promocija urbano aktivne kuće omogućava integraciju nasleđenog ambijenta u savremene tokove života, obezbeđujući gradskom centru društveno-ekonomski prosperitet i kulturni identitet i kontinuitet.

AB - This paper has emerged from a belief in the importance of architectural history for modern architectural practice and the education of young architects today. It proposes an alternative teaching approach in which theory-based and studio-based methodology are interconnected and mutually challenged to communicate heritage in the most beneficial way. The approach attempts to avoid communicating basic descriptive facts, but is rather based on the interpretation of theoretical knowledge through individual designs, and provokes discussions questioning universal messages of architecture through individual spatial solutions. It was introduced at the Faculty of Architecture in Belgrade, through the elective course New Reading of Architecture for the third-year students, in the school year of 2014/15 and 2015/16. Results show that critical thinking through designing, as opposed to the usual factual approach, met a favourable response from student. Both in architectural history and in designing for protected historical sites, having been made more historically aware and place-sensitive, they were actively encouraged to conduct research, and to define and shape their own design approach accordingly. It can be noted that experiencing the theory of architecture through critical reading of well-known treatises and exploring it through a design lens made the history of architecture an equal partner in the construction of the present.

Lost in Translation - War Island in Belgrade, Serbia

Nikezic, Ana

(GANGEMI EDITORE, 2018)

UR - https://raf.arh.bg.ac.rs/handle/123456789/771
AB - “Architecture and Nature” Design Studio of the Architecture Bachelor third year proposed architectural insertions while investigating on recovery strategies for an extreme and fragile territory – War Island in Belgrade. The paper synthetically presents results of such an exercise evoking crucial issues with the aim to show that architecture and landscape cannot be seen as a shift in scalar thinking, but as overlapping inseparable fields, occupying the same territory. “War Island” is a natural resort in the middle of Belgrade, a piece of sandy wetland on the confluence of the river Sava and Danube. Throughout its existence it was changing its position, shape, morphology and character. Its remote landscape is vague and unmemorable and its cultural value ephemeral. It is a lost space, an exquisite ecosystem full of protected species, but somehow a real terrain vague.
Together with students, we have conducted a research which was analytical in terms of exploring the island through place-based methodology, descriptive in terms of looking for available data on island’s topography, hydrography, ecology and biotop and speculative in proposing different scenarios for its recovery looking for new culturally constructed ecologies.
At the level of design, the results reflect two major points of recovering a fragile territory.
Biophilia (physical, emotional, cultural etc. access to nature) is crucial, thus walkability is essential. Particular features of fragility have to be understood as positive resources providing interactive, reflective and dynamic environment, becoming a driving force of the concept.
We have come to the conclusion that designing in extreme and fragile territories where conventional thinking struggles to respond, architecture and nature have to work together, to create a resilient system a dynamic, adaptive and responsive environment. A new perspective lies in creating a particular socio-ecological system ready to challenge rapidly changing environment.

abstract = "“Architecture and Nature” Design Studio of the Architecture Bachelor third year proposed architectural insertions while investigating on recovery strategies for an extreme and fragile territory – War Island in Belgrade.

AB - The aim of this paper is to investigate the potentials of utilizing the notion of scale as a methodological tool during a process of architectural design. This design method is exercised through a framework of Architecture and Nature design studio, within the program of undergraduate studies, Faculty of Architecture, University of Belgrade. The major architectural challenge was the issue of scale of a design (micro) in relation to the scale of the context (macro), proposing micro design as macro concept, the overall significance of concurrent perception of the whole and its parts. The proposed design method is based on simultaneous design procedures in opposing scales. In architectural design, scale is commonly perceived as a mere tool for optimizing and communicating the project.
During the course of design process, answers for each architectural question are searched for in the scale of the context (a network - topography), as well as in the scale of a detail (a dot – element). Within such a framework, students were expected to give a proposal for localized programmatic and spatial intervention that, as an impulse point, has the potential influence on and affects the ground of the overall context of the War Island.

AB - Solving settlement and likewise housing problems of socially vulnerable Romani in Belgrade and Serbia still has not found the right design approach. In contemporary plural society, it is a process of interaction of theoretical and practical tryouts set beyond the disciplinary limits. Insufficient awareness on Romani lifestyle elaborated in Romanypen, i.e. the Romani cultural system causes a lack of methods, techniques and tools to choose from and develop for this untangled complex problem. The intent of this article is to show that a collective lifestyle represents the essence needed for developing adequate design decisions of Romani settlements, thus fulfilling the potential for improving adequate housing solutions. The study starts on the assumption that in Romani settlements there is a strongly rooted relation between spatial and social level that enables an understanding of what this cultural group produces as its own place. The urban pattern of Romani settlements do not have an institutionally imposed organization; they are formed by the Romani themselves, by reflex rooted in needs of everyday life activities and consequently organized and built through inherited knowledge and skills. The subject of this study is aimed at recognizing and thus establishing spatial expressions of the Romani collective lifestyle in three types of Belgrade Romani settlements that, according to the differences in their inner habitational pattern, display a representative model. It is based on the field analysis of five already created and developed unplanned settlements in Belgrade through observing and residing within them and by talking and questioning to their residents. This study shows that the key to understanding existing urban and architectural patterns, as well as the potential for future design actions lies in reading out the processes of everyday life. Then, it demonstrates a tool that has a potential to divert previous housing politics towards a revitalization of design in relation to social profiles specificities. At the end, the study opens a path to creating adequate architectural and urban parameters for housing care in accordance to the lifestyle acceptable for each and every socially perceptible group.

AB - This paper emerged from the strong belief in the importance of research-based education for enhancing local identity in modern architectural practice and education of young architects today. It proposes an alternative teaching approach, introduced at the Faculty of Architecture, University of Belgrade, in the academic years 2014/15 and 2015/16. The main argument presented in the paper is: In order to strengthen the role of architectural history in education and in the profession, content-based teaching should be replaced with pedagogical
experimentation, having an emphasis in converting from teaching to learning.

AB - This article highlights how “place-based education” can be used to raise awareness about sustainability and potentially influence design process decisions that have environmental and cultural implications. “Place-based education” is a term used to describe an educational worldview based on development of curriculum centered on the local, social, economic, and ecological resources of a community. The study shows results of Masters Students’ research on situating a housing complex in the context of the agrarian landscape of Vojvodina, Serbia, considering it as a resource for a new sustainable urban lifestyle. During the first year of Masters Studies at the Faculty of Architecture, Belgrade University, an architectural design studio with 15 students had the task of exploring the potential of expanding the city of Belgrade across the agrarian landscape, as to affirm the role of place in contemporary everyday life. Students were expected to explore the possibilities and limitations of the relationship between man and agrarian landscape via architecture, re-thinking how various architectural design approaches could balance and harmonize the impact of the built environment on the agrarian landscape. The paper shows that “place-based education” possesses elements necessary for the inclusion of a wider spatial-cultural context in the process of architectural design and prioritization of environmental literacy and responsibility, as one of the main components of sustainable development.

Konkurs za urbanisticko-arhitektonsko rešenje uredenja trgova i ulica u centru Subotice

PY - 2014
UR - https://raf.arh.bg.ac.rs/handle/123456789/794

abstract = "Osnovna koncepcija rada je transponovanje postojeće prostorne strukture u integralni arhitektonsko-urbanistički kontekst.
AB - This article represents Master students’ research on situating a Visitor center to affirm the role of
history and culture in contemporary everyday life. During the first year of Master studies at the Faculty of
Architecture, University in Belgrade, Architectural Design Studio counting 12 students had a task to examine
the position and scope of architectural intervention in relation to the protected natural landscape and historical
heritage of the Trajan Bridge on the River Danube near Kladovo. Students were expected to explore the
possibilities and limitations of networking nature and architecture, how various architectural approaches
harmonize with natural environment and contribute to management strategies designed to minimize the negative
impact of built structures onto protected landscape. This article shows that sustainable architecture means
reaching a higher quality of life and designing through an active involvement of society and its historical
heritage through changes that are adaptive and in accordance with nature.
