AB - The research presents approaches to the complex refurbishment of multi-family buildings
constructed during the mass construction period in Serbia. These buildings comprise a quarter of
Serbia’s housing stock, are characterized by high energy consumption for heating, and have major
spatial and organizational deficiencies: small apartments, outdated and inflexible spatial organization, and the absence of elevators. The subject of the research is the application of the methodology of complex and integrated refurbishment by adding volume to existing multi-family buildings with the goal of achieving higher energy efficiency while remodeling and modernizing residential units and improving vertical building communications. The research presents a comparative analysis of the energy performance and spatial organization of the existing building and three variants of building improvement: Case 1 (without volumetric additions), Case 2 (with volumetric additions—relocating vertical communications), and Case 3 (with volumetric additions—expanding usable living space).
Based on the Knaufterm simulations, the energy savings for heating energy consumption compared to the existing state are 81% in Case 1, 89% in Case 2, and 87% in Case 3. Based on predefined parameters of spatial comfort, a comparative analysis of spatial comfort in residential units was conducted for all three improvement variants.

AB - The refurbishment of existing buildings with the aim of spatial-material improvement
combined with the reduction of energy consumption is a very contemporary topic in
recent years. The interest, both of experts and the general population, in saving energy
while minimizing operating costs is constantly increasing, and it is emphasized by the
uncertainties of energy supply coupled with constant increase in prices. Residential
buildings built in the period from 1946 to 1970 make up one quarter of the total multifamily
stock in Serbia. Most of these buildings are characterized by high energy
consumption for heating due to poor thermal performance of the building envelope.
Created according to the design regulations valid at that time, valued by today's user
requirements, they have major spatial and organizational deficiencies, notably small
apartments, outdated and inflexible spatial organization and small windows on the
facades. The absence of elevators in many multi-family buildings from that period also
reduces their comfort of use. The subject of the research is based on application of deep
refurbishment methodology by adding volumes, as a constructive-functional element, to
existing multi-family buildings. Primary goal represents achieving high energy efficiency
levels combined with bettering of spatial and living standards through remodeling and
modernization of residential units, and improving vertical building communications. The
paper will illustrate the application of the principle of volumetric addition on three
typologically different multi-family residential buildings. Based on the National Typology of
Residential Buildings of Serbia, the subject of research are most common building
typologies: free-standing buildings, row buildings within a city block and “lamellas”. The
research will analyze energy performance of the existing state on representative buildings
of each type, as well as performance of improved state through application of strategy of
deep refurbishment by adding a volume. The goal of the research is to review the
advantages and limitations of proposed method for energy and spatial improvements in
different types of multi-family residential buildings.

AB - This paper presents the possibilities for energy retrofitting of existing multi-family residential buildings constructed during the mass construction period in Serbia, which exhibit high energy consumption for heating. The research focuses on determining approaches to achieve deep energy renovation goals through interventions on the building envelope. The study analyzes the application of a methodology of complex and integrated refurbishment by adding volumes (increasing usable space) to existing multifamily buildings to achieve high energy efficiency, modernize residential units, and improve vertical building communications. The study includes analysis of two selected residential multi-family buildings of different types constructed during the same period. The research examines the energy performance of the existing state of selected buildings and two variants of improving the building envelope’s energy performance: refurbishment scenario 1 (without volumetric additions) and refurbishment scenario 2 (with volumetric additions). Current energy regulations in Serbia only analyze energy consumption for heating, limiting the calculation of total energy consumption. Therefore, this study calculates heating energy consumption and determines the energy class based on the results. Based on the Knaufterm simulations, the energy savings for heating energy consumption compared to the existing state are in case study 1 (RS1 73.5%, RS2 79.5%) and in case study 2 (RS1 68.3%, RS2 77.3%). Furthermore, the research explores the application of prefabricated lightweight timber assemblies in energy refurbishment that meet not only energy but also broader environmental requirements derived from the concept of sustainable architecture.

Glavni cilj projekata je realizacija energetski pozitivnih oblasti u određenim gradovima (Oulu – Finska, Trondheim – Norveška, Amsterdam – Holandija), a potom primenu istih integrisanih pametnih urbanih rešenja na druge gradove, odnosno replikaciju energetski pozitivnih oblasti u drugim gradovima (Vidin – Bugarska, Alba Julia – Rumunija, Budimpešta – Mađarska).
AB - Over the last decade, increasing attention has been paid to developing the concept of positive energy districts (PED) in order to encourage the transition to clean, renewable energy, but further research is needed to identify approaches to planning and design from a sustainable development perspective. PED represent an innovative concept for the development of urban districts and refer to urban settlements with the ability to achieve a positive energy balance on an annual basis. The concept of PED is based on three pillars, a high level of energy efficiency of the construction fund, the application of a system with local renewable energy sources and an optimized and flexible energy system. The subject of the research paper is an overview of three smart city projects (Making City, +CityxChange, Atelier) which aim to create and replicate positive energy districts within European cities. The main goal of the project is the realization of PED in certain cities
(Oulu-Finland, Trondheim-Norway, Amsterdam-Netherlands), and then the application of the same integrated smart urban solutions to other cities, or replication of PED in other cities (Vidin-Bulgaria, Alba Iulia-Romania, Budapest-Hungary). The projects are based on three principles: 1. reducing CO2 emissions by addressing technical, financial, legal and social measures to support the integration of local renewable energy production systems and high energy efficiency, stimulating local public and private investment; 2. sustainable and affordable energy systems; 3. cooperation and sharing of knowledge through opportunities for cooperation in the network of public authorities, institutes of knowledge, industry and active citizens in the city and sharing experiences with fellow citizens. Projects that have identified cities in our environment for the replication of PED have been selected for the research, so that the results of the research may be relevant for the integration of solutions in urban areas in our country.

AB - The functional and architectural obsolescence of the post-war multi-family housing
stock, and high energy consumption of the buildings, are characteristics that require complex
and integrated renovation. The research problem is the high energy consumption for heating
the existing multi-family residential buildings built in the period 1946-1970. Those buildings
are one quarter of the total multifamily housing stock of Serbia. The approach of renovating
existing buildings by adding exoskeletons has its functional advantages that set it apart as one
of the more significant approaches to complex building renovation. The subject of the research
includes the analysis of the application of the exoskeleton addition strategy to existing multifamily buildings in order to achieve high energy efficiency of buildings and increase the space
of residential units, and improve vertical communications of buildings. The aim of the research
is to examine the advantages of the approach to integrated improvement of existing building by
applying the strategy of exoskeleton addition, which includes energy, spatial and functional
improvement of the existing building. The paper will define the methodological procedure of
exoskeleton application from the initial idea, identification of the research problem, strategy of
its application, to the results that can be achieved by such a procedure.
