AB - In this study, we present and analyse the case of the Workshop titled “A Geometric Adven ture in the World of Grasshopper”, realised in September 2023, at the University of Belgrade,
Faculty of Architecture, within the manifestation called “The Week with Architecture”. The
content of the Workshop has been derived from the elective course “Parametric Modelling”,
offered to the first year master students.
After briefly explaining the teaching context in which the Workshop occurred, we present
the content structure divided into four working days, three of which dedicated to introducing
various programming techniques in the Rhino software and its well-known plug-in Grasshop per, and the fourth day left for the Workshop exhibition completing. Aimed at introducing
programming beginners into basic techniques of algorithmic creation of architectural form,
this Workshop started with an in-house developed Grasshopper definition producing various
2D geometric patterns. Based on this simple definition the students learned the fundamental
elements of the visual algorithmic systems. As a result of first day they produced a range of
different geometric patterns based on the p1 symmetry repetition of circles and polygons on a
predefined rectangular grid. The second day of the Workshop was dedicated to the geometry
of spatial curves, and required from the participating students considerably more programming
understanding and an additional research of the field. The third Workshop day was character ized by an integration of the techniques of the first and the second Workshop day. In this final
programming exercise the participants had to use the geometric grid, in terms of distribution
of a chosen spatial curve.
This teaching activity resulted in excellent geometric models created by participating stu dents, exhibited in the form of prints, the last day of the Workshop. All the Workshop commu nication and information exchange was supported and saved in the specially created TEAMS
learning environment. A catalogue of student submissions is in the process of creation. The
Workshop influenced the teaching of the Elective course “Parametric modelling” in terms of
introducing new topics and rearranging selected teaching activities.

AB - This paper introduces a family of n-polytopes, P An,c which is a geometrical realisation of simple permutoassociahedra. It has significant importance
serving as a topological proof of Mac Lane’s coherence. Polytopes in this
family are defined as Minkowski sums of certain polytopes such that every
summand produces exactly one truncation of the permutohedron, i.e. yields
to the appropriate facet of the resulting sum. Additionally, it leads to the
correlation between Minkowski sums and truncations, which gives a general
procedure for similar geometrical realisation of a wider class of polytopes.

AB - In the early 1990s, a family of combinatorial CW-complexes named permutoassociahedra was introduced by Kapranov, and it was realised by Reiner and Ziegler as a family of convex polytopes. The polytopes in this family are “hybrids” of permutohedra and associahedra. Since permutohedra and associahedra are simple, it is natural to search for a family of simple permutoassociahedra, which is still adequate for a topological proof of Mac Lane’s coherence. This paper presents such a family.

AB - This paper introduces an inductively defined tree notation for allthe faces of polytopes arising from a simplex by truncations. This notation al-lows us to view inclusion of faces as the process of contracting tree edges. Ournotation instantiates to the well-known notations for the faces of associahedraand permutohedra. Various authors have independently introduced combina-torial tools for describing such polytopes. We build on the particular approachdeveloped by Doˇsen and Petri ́c, who used the formalism of hypergraphs to de-scribe the interval of polytopes from the simplex to the permutohedron. Thisinterval was further stretched by Petric to allow truncations of faces that arethemselves obtained by truncations, and iteratively so. Our notation applies toall these polytopes. We illustrate this by showing that it instantiates to a no-tation for the faces of the permutohedron-based associahedra, that consists ofparenthesised words with holes. Dosen and Petric have exhibited some familiesof hypergraph polytopes (associahedra, permutohedra, and hemiassociahedra)describing the coherences, and the coherences between coherences etc., arisingby weakening sequential and parallel associativity of operadic composition. Wecomplement their work with a criterion allowing us to recover the informationwhether edges of these “operadic polytopes” come from sequential, or fromparallel associativity. We also give alternative proofs for some of the originalresults of Dosen and Petric.

fit in the interval from simplices to permutohedra (in any finite dimension). This

coherences of categorified operads correspond to sequential, or to parallel associativity.

we present a criterion for determining whether edges of polytopes associated with the
coherences of categorified operads correspond to sequential, or to parallel associativity.",

AB - The theme of this paper is the modeling of focal-directorial surfaces, starting with their definition, as a locus of points, whose sum of the distances to the focus and/or directrix is constant and predefined. We presented a heuristic algorithm for modeling surfaces and their isocurves, achieved through the use of the Grasshopper visual programming editor in the RhinoCeros environment. Surfaces and their isocurves were generated in a spherical grid, because a Cartesian grid proved unsuitable for the task and the chosen approach. This paper additionally proposes a modeling algorithm of a discrete variation of focal-directorial surfaces. The proposed modeling method is a 3D convex hull implemented on a set of surface points, with the selected points close to that surface. The discrete model is realized both in a Cartesian and spherical grid. There are significant differences between the obtained results.

AB - In this study we examine pedagogic values of the Box Packing concept, a puzzle problem, initially published as a demonstration within the Wolfram Demonstration Project, gathering 27 identical boxes of any proportion, in a regular cubic body. Methodologically based on the content analysis of realized educational experiments, the research is aimed at enlarging possible use of mathematical/geometric concepts in architectural education, particularly in domain of parametric design. After briefly explaining the concept and original demonstration, and giving an overview of its usage in several courses in various contexts, highlighting pedagogic implications of its use (including development of capabilities to recognize architectonics in pure geometric form, acquiring basic modelling skills, manipulating geometric bodies, understanding parametric systems, materialization in various materials including recycled ones, etc.) we focus on its transposition into a parametric system created as a Grasshopper definition (visual algorithmic editor for Rhino 3D software), analyzing the creation of algorithm and characteristic elements of the definition and discussing their potential application in solving other parametric problems.

AB - Converging developments in informati on and communicati on technologies, have greatly infl uenced the contemporary
architectural practi ce, and consequently the educati on of architects. Introducti on of the Internet
in the educati onal process, whether through the use of various resources related to the selected locati on
or broader base of disciplinary knowledge relevant to solving of a specifi c design problem, has become a
standard procedure for all parti cipants in educati on. The communicati on potenti al of the Internet, however,
provides opportuniti es not only to collect informati on and use existi ng knowledge, but also for the acti ve
exchange and creati on of new knowledge, which in this case relates to urban design in specifi c areas of Serbia.
One of the characteristi cs of a series of studio projects in urban design, realized during the academic year
2010/11 with third-year students, is the technological improvement of learning, especially by integrati ng
selected concepts of electronic learning (e-Learning) in the Studio Project (SP4). Virtual environment used to
support teaching in the studio of prof. Petar Arsic is shown in more detail as an example of this work.
Besides the implementati on of e-learning educati onal model, within the same study, in cooperati on with the
Cabinet for mathemati cs, geometry and architectural CAAD (Computer Aided Architectural Design), specifi c
concepts of parametric modeling have been developed, adapted to the needs of modern urban design. In
this sense, the parametric modeling system that provides real ti me control of the geometry and parameters
of urban structure (number of fl oors, ground fl oor dimensions, density and objects’ layout), as well as the
index of constructi on and occupancy of land is presented.

i zauzetosti parcele, u realnom vremenu.

i zauzetosti parcele, u realnom vremenu.",

AB - To evolutionary-computation researches, the mechanisms of evolution come to be solutions for the most pressing computational problems in many fields. A Genetic algorithm (GA) is a form of evolution that occurs on a computer. These algorithms are appealing sources of inspiration, searching methods that can be used for both - solving problems and modelling evolutionary systems. After describing the basic elements, functionalities and the most important theoretical foundations of GA, this paper will present how GA can be designed to solve different types of problems, including optimization of function, evolving strategies and cellular automata. The accent is interaction between GA and parametric modelling using Grasshopper (the plug-in for the Rhino platform) in the field of architecture and urbanism. This approach finds optimal solution, combination of parameters, which complies given conditions controlled by urbanism's requests. In addition, the influences of the GA control parameters on its solving process are studied. This system has been developed and tasted within the Chair for Mathematics, Architectural Geometry and CAAD, at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Architecture. This study has partly been completed within the following projects, funded by the Ministry of Education and Science of Serbia: OI174012 and III47014.

AB - In this study we examine a methodology of integrating selected mathematical concepts in architectural design. The studied case is based on the Box Packing concept, published as a demonstration within the Wolfram Demonstration Projects. Mathematically speaking, it is an example of a puzzle problem, within which a set of 27 identical cubic elements, changing their proportions, form a cubical body. The demonstration has been transposed into a powerful Grasshopper definition (visual algorithm editor compatible with the Rhino modelling platform), suitable for use by architecture students, as an example of parametric modelling. The architectural potential of the concept has been examined within an elective course titled Generic explorations 06 in the autumn semester 2010/11 at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Architecture. This initial examination resulted in a series of small scale objects realized in Corian material, in collaboration with the firm DuPont (Serbia). After this initial examination of the concept, it is integrated in the 3D Visual communications course offered to a group of first year students, within which a series of objects have been created, modelled, materialized, interpreted architecturally and multiplied (varying parametrically), forming an urban complex.
