AB - This paper addresses the challenges of architectural higher education to cope with a state of continuous change within the relationship between heritage and sustainability. The initial assumption is that research activities based on design taxonomies—terms used in architectural discourse of heritage and sustainability—followed by fruitful analysis and discussion can contribute to the advancements in curricula design and development. Accordingly, the paper aims to develop a new methodological framework for addressing sustainability and heritage, enriching curricula design and assessment strategy. Data collection on identification and analysis of terms was carried out within the Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership titled Enhancing of Heritage Awareness and Sustainability of Built Environment in Architectural and Urban Design Higher Education (HERSUS). After the process of filtering, interpretation, and comparison of project findings, a three-fold comprehensive analysis was conducted: (a) learning outcome quantitative analysis, (b) cross-cutting analysis of spatial scales and course types, and (c) synthesis. The paper results in the methodological framework that reinforces different pedagogical approaches to heritage and sustainability derived as a result of the applied research process. The main conclusions are concerned with the applicability of the methodological framework, designed for the improvement of existing and development of new comprehensive courses and programme contents.

AB - This paper builds on the experiences of the Erasmus+ project titled Enhancing of Heritage Awareness and Sustainability of Built Environment in Architectural and Urban Design Higher Education (HERSUS), coordinated by the University of Belgrade - Faculty of Architecture as a leading higher education institution, with partner institutions of Universita Iuav di Venezia, University of Cyprus – Department of Architecture, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki – School of Architecture and the University of Sevilla – UNESCO Chair on Built Urban Heritage CREhAR in the digital era. The paper will provide systematic review of analytical tools and design approches derived from the Statements for teaching through design for sustainability of the built environment and heritage awareness (Third Intellectual Output of HERSUS Project). The Design Tools implies a driving and operational element of a design process applied systemically to achieve a design goal and solve a design problem. Although very often considered exclusively as a technical and procedural entity of design, Tools have become both social instruments in the design process (collaborative Tools) and a digital innovation in design (3D and simulation Tools), thus significantly contributing to the contemporary practice of architectural heritage research encouraging an entirely new view of its analysis, valorisation, documentation, and redesign.

AB - The students’ questionnaires involved 506 students (176 completed and 330 uncompleted questionnaires) from UB-FA and other Architectural Schools in Serbia. The questionnaire was attended by students of all targeted levels of study, as well as alumni, with the largest share of respondents from the master level of study. UB-FA analysis of the survey data identifies following key points about the State-of-the-Art in the field of heritage and sustainability education: (1) an almost invisible number of courses which involve sustainability and heritage as umbrella concepts in curriculum design have been identified within existing master’s and specialist-level study programs, (2) students are not sufficiently aware of the impact of practice-based and ICT approaches in strengthening their comprehension of principles related to the nexus of sustainability and heritage, (3) the mismatch in understanding the key concepts of sustainability and heritage in line within different scales of design practice is recognized, as well as the need for developing integral, multiscale approach, and finally (4) a gap is recognized between what students have identified in evaluating their skills and knowledge, and identifying what they consider relevant for employability and practice arena.

AB - Performative and affective heritage is a form of heritage that is constantly being constructed and reconstructed in accordance with changes in the socio-cultural context. It refers to spaces that encourage the emotional and imaginary relationship of users, expressed through the examination and reproduction of the past, as well as the reconstruction of existing systems of meaning by developing new interactive practices. These features derive from the historical character of the heritage space, as parts of the past that remain different from the environment, often free and suitable for critical expression, action, and spontaneous appropriation. The process of performativity and affectivity itself must be collective so that different actors can incorporate their different views into debates. In this context, heritage is a polygon of free expression and experimentation through which it is constantly re-examined and changed. In this way, this type of heritage remains active and self-sustaining through current socio-cultural interactions.

AB - Adaptive Reuse is defined as the process of adapting an object to a new function while retaining its authentic architectural characteristics and values. The process seeks to preserve the existing physical structure as much as possible, to preserve the historical value of the heritage, leaving the possibility for repair refurbishment and adding of the necessary elements. This reduces the consumption of building materials, resources, and energy for new construction. On the other hand, the adaptation to the new purpose enables the active life of the building in contemporary conditions, which is the best prevention of active preservation, protection from decay and devastation. To adequately protect the heritage, the procedure requires an expert assessment of the historic value of heritage, suitability of the building for adaptive conversion, a possible adaptation of the building to a new role, and possible functions that correspond to the existing architectural characteristics of the building. In the contemporary practice of urban development, this procedure is considered an effective way to reduce the spread of urban areas and environmental impact by adequate use of existing space.

AB - When discussing urban policies that tackle the question of sustainability in relation
to urban heritage, it is crucial to highlight identified duality. On the one hand - Serbia follows the contemporary paradigms and perspectives concerning sustainability
in planning and urban development, as evidenced by the publication of specific strategic documents, planning laws, and chapters in planning documents. On the other hand, laws in the heritage domain are often obsolete, since the current Law dates from 1995 with a minimal change adopted in 2011. Consequently, in recent years, efforts have been made to identify various problematic segments of this law that partially disable the sustainability of heritage but also neglects specific types
of heritage. These endeavours can be followed in the draft documents produced in the sector of culture and specifically by departments related to the heritage, which have not yet been adopted.

AB - Climate-sensitive design is the approach to architectural design which is routed in the understanding of specific climate conditions and its impacts on building design. Primarily it is related to issues of achieving human comfort in buildings through building design that is aligned with local climate conditions. It is similar to terms climate responsive design, bio-climatic design, or design with climate, last referring to the seminal book of Victor Olgyay (1963, Princeton University Press). This design approach today is considered a basis for energy-efficient, green or sustainable design. It is also deeply connected to studies of vernacular architecture as part of the built heritage, since vernacular architecture is always climate sensitive and offers lessons for contemporary reinterpretation. It may appear strange to even highlight the importance of education on climate-sensitive design, since it should be the basis for any design, but too many decades of uniform design solutions across different climates gave poor results in terms of energy efficiency and quality of buildings, so it is necessary to emphasize the importance of these issues.

Analysis of the selected building for the case study covers its urban layout and architectural, constructive, technological and material features in order to determine constraints and potentials in the refurbishment process. As input for energy calculations/simulations a detailed 3D model is required, where modelling principles are being practiced. Detail energy performance calculations in available software is done and energy class of the building is determined. Design of refurbishment scenarios with variant solutions analysis and calculations for verification.

AB - The main subject of research challenged within the workshop relates to the exploration of landscape as a heritage construct. Recognizing changes in natural conditions within the landscape and diversity in nature as a reflection of social, cultural and economic circumstances, the workshop examines the development of new analytical strategies towards establishing (1) integrated research of landscape patterns and (2) understanding of city morphogenesis. The workshop subject is the research of the relationship between urban and rural landscape, as well as the transformation of the natural into the cultural landscape. Workshop employed case study-based research through multiscale approach that are structured in several phases from phenomenon identification to their graphical interpretation.

AB - The Morphogenesis term originates from the Greek morphê meaning shape and genesis meaning creation, and can be defined as the ‘creation and subsequent transformation of urban form’ (Vance 1977, 37)The morphogenetic approach is primarily used in the field of urban morphology, specifically within historico-geographical school. It was mainly researched and applied by M.R.G. Conzen and his successors who formed Urban Morphology Research Group in Birmingham, UK. In the domain of urbanism and architecture, it refers to the analysis of continual and perpetual historical process in which urban tissue is observed both at the time of their emergence and during the development and transformation in time (Djokić, 2009), hence contributing to the preservation of relationship between people and place through morphogenetic imprint as the basis for planning and design decisions. From the perspective of heritage and sustainability, the importance of the approach emerges from its focus on changes of the built environment, but taking into consideration the changes of the function and to the identity of the environment, and socio-economic and socio-political conditions that triggered changes.

AB - The Space syntax emerged in mid 1980s both as a theory of spatial and social systems and method that allows the research of these phenomena offering an understanding of the built environment and social processes. The term refers to the space as a system of syntactic relations, and syntax as a set of rules that determines the way certain elements are composed. It was conceived by Bill Hillier, Julienne Hanson, and members of The Bartlett, University College London. The method is used to decode functionality and structure of the space and to analyze real situations, aiming to answer questions on how and why societies create different spatial organizations / patterns. It enables comparative analysis of buildings and settlements across both space and time, and hence it can be valuable for understanding and demystifying complex layers of historical morphology important for urban design decisions. In education, it offers an evidence-based approach and foundation of the analytical thinking. Space syntax method has been used for research in architecture, urban design, urban planning, transport, while recenly it becomes relevant as well to archaeology, information technology, urban and human geography, and anthropology.

AB - The Nebojša Tower (Tower) is a part of a wider monumental complex - the Belgrade Fortress - built on the strategically important position on the confluence of European rivers Sava and Danube in Belgrade city which represents a unique museum of Belgrade’s past. The Tower is one of the few better preserved medieval buildings within Belgrade Fortress. It was built in 1456 within the framework of extensive fortifications construction, which was undertaken to rebuild the destroyed and damaged city fortifications. It belongs to the oldest type of early artillery cannon towers which represents a significant architectural and construction achievement of that period on the territory of the city of Belgrade. It was built for the purpose of the city defense and, in a broader sense, was part of the defense system - the wall of Christianity - which successfully stopped Osman empire incursions towards the center of Europe for decades. Centuries later, when it lost its former military significance, it was turned into a dungeon.

AB - The last decade of the 20th century witnessed a general decay of the Old Core of Zemun. Unplanned structures of inappropriate architectural and building quality occurred within the area of exceptional architectural, cultural and historical value, threatening to obliterate its heritage value. Besides that, degradation of public spaces and their inappropriate use, as well as the neglect and devastation of protected buildings and structures, additionally lowered its heritage quality. Another problem was a fragmented treatment of the segments that form the Old core, in previous urban plans. Therefore, the purpose of the OCZ DR Plan was to form the basis for the integrated and sustainable development, use and conservation of The Old Core area.

AB - The Heritage Value Matrix (HVM) is recognized as a growing analytical tool in the study of architectural and urban heritage, which finds its methodological roots within the value-based approach of architectural programming. The EU Council Work Plan for Culture 2019-2022 denotes architecture as a cross-cutting field and “as a discipline that encompasses the right balance between cultural, social, economic, environmental and technical aspects for the common good”. The right balance between these aspects also implies a focus on achieving sustainable development, which is why the identification of values that will be the triggers of this process is extremely important in research, education, practice and policy making. At the general level, HVM is an analytical cross-cutting system in which two axes intersect - problem and value. The first activates a problem-based approach in order to identify the scope that needs to be critically engaged through design process (problem-solving), while the second points to values that decode the contextual framework of heritage.

AB - Heritage reprogramming (HRP) is recognized as a growing, analytical and problem-based approach in the design process in which the subject of design/redesign is an entity of urban or architectural heritage. The original position of the HRP approach in architectural discourse is under the auspices of architectural programming methodology and conceptual framework of the architectural program, raised in specific contextual circumstances of exponential urban development and urbanity growth, including changing patterns of everyday life, industrialization, mass construction, and standardization (Cherry, 1999). In its contextual framework, the programming methodology was created with the aspiration to (a) develop new spatial patterns and typologies in an effective, critical and argumentatively based way and (b) provide high performance and functionality of the space. Through rendering the programming methodology from its origin (functionally oriented and problem-based) (Pena & Fock, 1969) towards its rehabilitation from modernist doctrine (hybrid oriented and process-based approach) (Reeser Lawrence & Schafer, 2006), today, when cities experience limited capacity, one of the central design issues is focused on reprogramming existing typologies. This design issue also reveals a new nature of programming - the RE nature - encouraging its new rehabilitation from a strictly developmental perspective to one that deals with creating a new functional order within the existing inherited spatial framework with the aim to provide a sustainable configuration of activities, spaces and relationships.

AB - International scientific project entitled Enhancing of Heritage Awareness and Sustainability of Built Environment in Architectural and Urban Design Higher Education (HERSUS) strives to enhance and test innovative teaching practices in the field of sustainability of the built heritage, and boost the competence and motivation of educators and researchers in the field of architecture and urban design to include in curricula innovative elements so as to prepare students and educators to become real actors of the environmental change. The main purpose of the paper is to present new innovative courses, groups of courses, and extracurricular activities within the existing study programs of participating HEI (from Serbia, Italy, Cyprus, Greece, and Spain), which can contribute to bridging the gap between sustainability and heritage. Having in mind that University of Belgrade Faculty of Architecture is the Lead organisation of the project, the paper will present review of best practices in educating sustainability and heritage as a result of the first project activity and lessons learned from the HERSUS Webinar Teaching through Design for Sustainability of the Built Environment and Heritage Awareness.
