A Taxonomy of Liminality: Exploring Open Infrastructure Spaces in Post-Socialist Belgrade

AB  - Urban morphological approaches to open space are often overlooked in interdisciplinary studies, particularly due to the complexity of spaces left-over or spontaneously generated. This paper focuses on these under-represented spaces, integrating the pedestrian perspective into the analysis. Belgrade, Serbia, serves as a case study, revealing remnants of open public spaces within the post-socialist context, shaped by historical urban planning principles and recent socio-economic shifts. In this paper, all of these spaces are considered as liminal spaces from a pedestrian perspective, accommodating individual and collective users with various cultural meanings. The aim is to create a potential classification of pedestrian liminal spaces in post-socialist Belgrade. The study employs a theoretical and observational approach, combining quantitative assessments of urban morphological indicators with qualitative analyses using the urban structural unit (USU) approach. By observing the use of space and detecting social dynamics, the study proposes three types of liminal spaces from both morphological and cultural aspects. In comparative analysis between these spaces, morphology and organization imply a possible measure of spatial quality. This work can contribute to a new way of reading and analysing contemporary open public spaces and help in their transformation, especially in a post-socialist context.

Towards Numerical Architectural Order Identification: Expressing Capital Morphology by Using Dynamics of Its Parameters

AB  - Previous subject-related research, that describes stylistic peculiarities of artefacts by taking into account their morphometric/geometric characteristics, explicates the results (used to differentiate them in terms of style they belong to) mainly descriptively – by evaluating the obtained data visually. The narrower aim of this Paper is to explicate the mentioned characteristics numerically/quantitatively by transposing stylistic-wise parameters (descriptors of fractal and non-fractal nature), previously investigated by the actual authors, into the form of dynamics of their values namely explicators. Therefore, the main research questions of this study are both how to express artefact morphology by using dynamics of its parameters and, thus, how to numerically/quantitatively identify architectural style concrete artefact belongs to. To achieve that scientifically, a triplet of capital samples (as the most distinctive elements among artefacts), namely their digital 3D models, are employed per each fundamental classical architectural order (Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian). The subject of this Paper is to establish relevant morphometric/geometric indicators not only in the form of explicators mentioned above, but qualifiers too, enabling so: to numerically express capital morphology, namely to quantitatively estimate levels of intra-similarity of capitals assumed to belong to the same order, and inter-dissimilarity of those assumed to belong to different ones. Both types of the established indicators refer to capital contours which are positioned in mutually equidistant transverse section planes (defined per each chosen capital sample of each of the analysed orders). The wider research aim refers to both: (a) a possibility to numerically/quantitatively identify order a concrete fragment of capital/artefact belongs to in terms of recognising it computationally (as confidently as possible from the mathematical probability point of view), and (b) to perform morphology-wise capital/artefact segmentation. Presented innovative methodology brings up a more reliable possibility to identify architectural order “stylistically unknown capital” belongs to – by using a newly introduced indicator (in the form of dynamics) to express its morphology numerically/quantitatively. Future research will be dealt with software-wise automation of stylistic decoding steps (rough capital classification and order-belonging estimation).

AB  - The magic world of mirrors, their application, integration in interiors and exposure in exteriors, intrigues architectural designers and artists for a long time. Inspired with wide recent usages of mirrors in innovative architectural designs practice, as well as in arts, and grounded our understanding on well-known geometric/optic principles of mirroring, the authors conceptualized a Workshop that was offered to students of architecture, forestry and applied arts, as an extracurricular two-weeks activity. After briefly introducing a historical/chronological overview of mirrors application in architectural design practice and applied art, relevant theoretical aspects of mirroring were demonstrated on the Workshop. The participating students were offered two possibilities for integration of mirrors in their design-outcomes: to experiment with analogue models and digital/computing ones. For that reason, a large amount of small glass mirror parts was provided. Also, functional parametric families of digital mirrors (planar, concave and convex) were developed especially for the workshop and offered on-line. Particular foci of this paper are on both: the teaching methodology that was exclusively prepared for the Workshop, and specific usage of experimentation (to trigger unusual ideas and to utilize relevant familiar methods and procedural activities in the new – this context). In the discussion part of this study, a systematized overview of the Workshop results and its analysis from geometric and semantic point of view are given. The results are divided into: first interim critique, second interim critique and final submission. Through a generalization of conclusions, the lessons learned, namely, the level of subject-related geometric knowledge acquired from this unique teaching experience are reviewed, and an analysis of their possible applications in other pedagogic contexts related to geometry-teaching is presented.

Digitalization of the AECO Sector – Accomplishments in BIM Application and Development in Serbia

AB  - Focusing proposed paper on the Architecture, Engineering, Construction and recently included Operation (AECO) sector, we start from a statement that this sector is a step behind other manufacturing domains in overall application of digital technologies and artificial intelligence. With the main motivation to examine ways of bridging the digital gap, we consider adoption of Building Information Modelling (BIM) as one of reliable indications of the state of digitalization in the sector. After briefly introducing general features of BIM technology, this study focuses on the actual situation in Serbia, searching for examples of the most advanced applications and developments in practice. Methodologically the study is qualitative and the research is based on examination of cases, where the observed sample has been created from the application examples presented within the series of online sessions titled “BIM in Practice Serbia”, organized by the Group for BIM Technology of the Chamber of Commerce of Serbia. Consisting of twenty examples of various advanced applications of BIM in Serbian practice, this sample is formed “by difference”, looking for various cutting-edge applications. The selected examples of BIM application in Serbia are firstly structured by area of application (design, infrastructure, scan-to-BIM, investors’ adoptions, etc.), then analysed in detail. The results obtained indicate that within the Serbian market we could identify advanced BIM usages, and especially valuable development results, represented by the BEXEL Manager software, developed in Serbia and spread and localized worldwide. Based on the obtained results, we could predict the future of BIM application in Serbia, but also could highlight the contribution of Serbian development efforts to the global AECO sector.

Encoding/Decoding Capitals of Classical Architectural Orders by Using Fractal Geometry: Establishing Methodology

AB  - In most cases, artefacts are differentiated in terms of style they belong to – mainly visually, not mathematically. So, the main research questions of this study are both how to numerically encode stylistic regularities (peculiarities) as geometric indicators of artefacts morphology and how to decode them, namely to identify architectural style those artefacts belong to. Columns, namely their capitals are chosen as the most distinctive elements among artefacts. To elaborate on the validity of the defined principles of the aim-related methodology, a few representatives (capital samples) from each of three fundamental classical architectural orders (Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian) are used. The subject of this Paper is to establish relevant indicators of capital qualification, capital classification, and thus, referred architectural order identification. The verification of those indicators is performed by processing two sets of capitals contours (that belong to the mutually equidistant transverse and equiangular radial section planes) of each of the selected samples (namely digital 3D models). The narrower research aim is to point out that it is possible to encode not only chosen but also any other capital – by using the mentioned indicators of fractal and non-fractal nature (as a control one). The wider research aim refers to a possibility to identify order a concrete fragment of capital belongs to in terms of recognising it computationally (as confidently as possible from the mathematical probability point of view) based on the established research methodology principles. Finally, it is possible to conclude that changes of the analysed indicators trendlines behaviour (expressed by changes of its slope, roughness, continuation, etc.) accurately/precisely describe morphology-wise variations of a form that could point out subject-related stylistic variation, as well. So, this Paper demonstrates not only the fact that architectural orders capitals are true fractal objects, but rather how fractal analysis as a tool can be used to scientifically numerically encode/decode their certain characteristics (fractal features) of single- or multi-scale nature.

So, the main research questions of this study are both how to numerically encode stylistic regularities (peculiarities) as geometric indicators of artefacts morphology and how to decode them, namely to identify architectural style those artefacts belong to. AB  - The interest in pattern geometry and its application to architecture may be
   seen throughout history. While some authors were fascinated by pattern
   aesthetics, others were focused on their effectiveness and underlying
   principles of pattern formation. In continuing with the work of the second
   group of authors, this paper reviews opportunities for efficient ways of
   implementing patterns in the design of architectural elements, supported by
   recent developments in parametric design and digital fabrication techniques.
   This paper aims to analyze pattern configurations found in nature in order
   to determine the underlying generation principles and the potential of their
   application for 3D printed slab systems. Using case study methodology,
   selected patterns will be applied in developing a generative parametric
   design system, which will further be tested in creating and (small-scale)
   fabricating ribbed slab elements. The result of the research is the
   generalization of a design approach based on principles of natural pattern
   formation to produce sustainable design solutions that rely on the
   transposition of the inherent efficiency of natural systems, such as low
   energy or material consumption.

AB  - In the Republic of Serbia, rural areas occupy a large part of the territory, where almost 50% of the total population lives. Rural areas play an important role in regional and overall development, they represent areas of great importance for food production and are characterized by landscapes with exceptional natural features. Despite the large number of potentials that characterize these areas, they are devastated, marginalized and backward in economic, social and spatial terms. The paper analyzes rural areas in the territory of the City municipality Pantelej in Niš with the aim of determining their development problems and potentials, which are the basis for defining future programs and projects for the revitalization of these areas. In order to plan comprehensive development for rural areas, it is necessary to determine the key development problems and potentials based on the analysis of all the structures of rural areas so that all their characteristics are considered. The conducted analysis concluded that the analyzed rural areas are currently in poor condition and that revitalization of all their structures is necessary in order to overcome the existing problems, improve the potentials that distinguish them and promote future development.

AB  - Овај рад се бави релацијама које се у савременим градовима, у савременом урбаном животу, успостављају између две велике и важне друштвене праксе: уметности и урбанизма. Иако би на први поглед могло изгледати да ове две праксе природно сарађују, то ипак није тако. Постоје многе отежавајуће околности које доводе до тога да ове две праксе отежано сарађују, те да се реализују потпуно независно и одвојено, као што то и јесте у њиховој природи. Међутим, у случајевима када се та сарадња оствари, често долази до значајних унапређења, како у естетској и семантичкој слици града, тако и у јавној друштвеној сфери. 
Ако јавна уметност омогућује да се град остварује и перцепира као уметничко ремек-дело l'oeuvre, она мора бити партиципативна у најширем могућем смислу. Партиципација и колаборација морају бити активне, са омогућеним најширим спектром стејкхолдера у свим фазама реализације јавне уметности: планирање, дизајн, имплементација и одржавање. У циљу постизања одрживије праксе креирања места (place-making), ексклузивна позиција уметника бива употпуњена грађанским „правом на град“ – које се остварује као право на учешће у креирању јавних простора који генеришу значење и поштовање урбаног окружења. 
Уочено је да уметност, да би била истински јавна уметност и имала јак утицај на јавну сферу, мора обухватати јавност, бити прихваћена од стране јавности, а заједничко културно искуство мора бити препознатљиво. У том погледу, учешће јавности се показује као нужност за производњу партиципативне уметности у којој је публика директно укључена у креативни процес, са могућношћу учешћа као посматрач, ко-едитор и/или чак као ко-аутор процеса. Тако, начин на који је јавна уметност перципирана, креирана и изведена рефлектује локалне ставове друштвеног и културног развоја, који може имати утицај на доприносе пракси креирања места.

AB  - Artificial Intelligence (AI) and 3D printing (3DP) play considerable roles in what is known as the Fourth Industrial Revolution, by developing data- and machine-intelligence-based integrated production technologies. In architecture, this shift was induced by increasingly complex design requirements, posing important challenges for real-world design implementation, large-scale structure fabrication, and production quality standardization. The study systematically reviews the application of AI techniques in all stages of creating 3D-printed architectural structures and provides a comprehensive image of the development in the field. The research goals are to (1) offer a comprehensive critical analysis of the body of literature; (2) identify and categorize approaches to integrating AI in the production of 3D-printed structures; (3) identify and discuss challenges and opportunities of AI integration in architectural production of 3D-printed structures; and (4) identify research gaps and provide recommendations for future research. The findings indicate that AI is an emerging addition to the 3DP process, mainly transforming it through the real-time adjustment of the design or printing parameters, enhanced printing quality control, or prediction and optimization of key design features. However, the potential of the application of AI in large-scale architectural 3D printing still needs to be explored. Lastly, the study emphasizes the necessity of redefining traditional field boundaries, opening new opportunities for intelligent architectural production.

AB  - In recent decades, building methods such as 3D printing have been increasingly
researched for the design and fabrication of various architectural elements. Artificial
Intelligence is another rapidly developing technology whose potential in the building
industry is continuously being explored. This paper’s objective lies in mapping out the
field of existing Artificial Intelligence tools for large-scale 3D printing, searching for
possible applications throughout the different development stages including the prefabrication
phase with structural design, optimization, behavior simulations, and
predictions, as well as the production phase through the real-time monitoring of the
process. In this study, different types of Artificial Intelligence (such as machine learning,
deep learning, and computer vision), have been identified regarding their role in 3D
printing to assess its potentials, limitations, and the present research gaps. Finally,
potential research directions and emerging topics are presented. The study's findings
increase the understanding of Artificial Intelligence techniques and applications in the 3D
printing process and can aid in choosing and implementing the most promising ones in
further research.

The AEC industry has traditionally been associated with high material waste and environmental impact. However, the advent of 3D printing has revolutionized architectural design and manufacturing processes. Using recycled clay as a printing material, can address two challenges: reducing waste and promoting sustainability. Recycled clay, obtained from construction and demolition waste or other sources, offers advantages such as abundance, low cost, and a low environmental footprint, making it suitable for circular economy practices. Moreover, using recycled clay in 3D printing enables architects to create complex, customizable, and structurally efficient building elements, reducing the need for labor-intensive, resource-consuming traditional manufacturing techniques. The principles of the circular economy involve diverting collecting, processing, and transforming clay waste into printable material. Resource extraction and energy-intensive manufacturing processes associated with conventional building materials could be reduced by reusing and recycling clay. The paper examines case studies and ongoing research efforts in the field of 3D printing with recycled clay, demonstrating the potential of this approach to contribute to a circular economy in the AEC industry. This approach reduces waste, preserves natural resources, reduces carbon footprint, improves energy efficiency, and creates sustainable and aesthetically pleasing architectural structures. In conclusion, integrating 3D printing technologies with recycled clay presents a promising way towards creating a sustainable closed-loop circular economy system in architecture. By reimagining the construction process, designers and builders can contribute to an environmentally friendly and resource-efficient future while pushing the boundaries of architectural innovation.

AB  - The concept of genius loci is rooted in the idea that people who spend time in a particular place create its atmosphere and character. Phenomenology, a philosophical perspective that emphasizes the subjective experience of individuals, is particularly relevant in understanding and experiencing the genius loci. Phenomenology emphasizes the need to acknowledge existing patterns of space usage and reflect on the spirit of the place rather than imposing a homogenous design that aims to protect the built environment. By focusing on the lived experiences and perceptions of individuals within a place, instead of enforcing predetermined values or interpretations, we can better understand and preserve its genius loci. Based on the presented previous research in this paper, it is clear that the current approach to understanding genius loci should shift its focus from signifiers of the past to the users who actively shape and experience the place in the present. The theoretical framework of this paper is defined by Husserl's and Heidegger's perspectives on phenomenology – transcendental approach and hermeneutic approach. The aim of this paper is to emphasize the importance of understanding the unique qualities and characteristics of a location and integrating them into the design process. By focusing on the subjective experiences and perceptions of individuals, designers can create spaces that are meaningful, authentic, and reflective of the community they serve. The essence and uniqueness of a place are defined by the spirit of the place, which connects the tangible and intangible components of the environment. As the intangible quality that gives a place its unique character and atmosphere, the spirit of the place encompasses the feelings, moods, and attitudes associated with a place, as well as the cultural and historical context that shapes its identity. The outcome of this research showed that the essence of a place lies in the perceptions and experiences of its inhabitants, rather than its physical structures and historical artifacts.

Aesthetics of Transport Infrastructure Space as Landscape Between Flows and Cultures of Movement

AB  - The contemporary city consists of a series of vital systems in which different
flows are present – movements, traffic, forms, thoughts, experiences,
and others. The traffic systems that occupy a large area of the
city and are important for its further development stand out.
The focus of the paper is on the landscape of transport space between
new modes of transport and different flows in the contemporary city
on the one hand and the culture of movement and meaning brought
by transport users on the other. Sensitivity as a measure in aesthetic
reading helps us to understand infrastructure as an integrated part of
the landscape, and not as isolated from it. The subject of the paper is
landscapes of experience from two perspectives of observation, i.e.,
two speeds of movement: vehicles and pedestrians–visual and sound
landscape. This paper aims to define the elements of user experience
in the space of transport, between aesthetics and humanity.
The study area is the space of Highway E75 in the old part of Belgrade,
especially loops (punctures) in connection with the rest of the
city–parts named Autokomanda and Mostarska petlja. The focus of
the paper is the avant-garde observation of infrastructures like Bergson’s
metaphysics, which contributes to the metaphysical framework
of transport infrastructure and the definition of the relative and the
absolute in a flow. Also, there are Bosanquet’s aesthetic approaches
that help define a new pattern of experience in the aesthetics of
transport. Two films of German Expressionism from the Weimar period,
“Metropolis” and “Golem”, help to consider social conditions and
factors in the space of transport.
There is a question of considering space as landscape and also landscape
as a space. When space is landscape, we can consider space
in the aesthetics of architecture, sculpture, and urbanism, trying to
define space-volume and space-direction. The paper contributes
to a new way of perceiving the space of transport outside its economic
role in the neoliberal world, where speed and connection in
the exchange of goods, services, and people are extremely important,
seeking the aesthetics and humanity of such a space.

AB  - Being created during the period of intensive industrialization, industrial buildings and landscapes carry importance as birth places of rapid technological progress, social and economic changes, which has established their great significance for modern human history and identity. Termination of their active function causes symptoms of decline to appear gradually, and their number decreases as the time passes. They are often endangered regardless of their protection status. Implementation of adaptive reuse principles allows for less strict approach to conservation practice, and its benefits are demonstrated worldwide. Despite that fact, industrial heritage has not been revitalized enough through adequately treated sites in Serbia. That indicates lack of understanding of the value of this cultural and historical heritage, as well as its suitable future purposes, impossible without some form of active dialog between participants in the planning process. The legal preconditions for this collaboration exist in Serbian regulations, and they are examined in the paper, but other potential causes of the lack of consensus that result in failure are also explored. In Belgrade, industrial brownfields occupy attractive locations, often targeted for market-driven redevelopment. For that reason, the paper explores current practice of revitalizing brownfield sites of industrial heritage in Belgrade. It considers the achievements, probable missed opportunities, and remaining potentials where acquired knowledge can be utilized. Key results of the research define critical points in the planning process for the preservation of values despite the modernity of brownfield sites transformations. The purpose of this paper is to help safeguard industrial landscapes of Belgrade and Serbia, and their sustainable conversion, the most adequate for the present moment, as well as to contribute to urban reconstruction of declining landscapes to which these brownfield sites belong.

AB  - Teritorijalne strategije su u fokusu održivog i integralnog urbanog i teritorijalnog razvoja u savremenoj praksi planiranja u Evropskoj uniji. One odražavaju trenutno shvatanje strateškog planiranja kao adaptivnog procesa koji zahteva upravljanje promenama. U okviru tehničke podrške Programa Evropske unije za lokalni razvoj (EU PRO Plus) testirana je primena dva instrumenta u lokalnom kontekstu - Integrisana teritorijalna ulaganja (eng. - ITI) i Održivi urbani razvoj (eng. - SUD). U pitanju su savremeni instrumenti, koji su efikasno sredstvo za integraciju prioritetnih ulaganja, tematskih ciljeva i različitih izvora finansiranja u okviru teritorija. Teritorijalne strategije se usmeravaju na ekonomske, ekološke, klimatske, socijalne i demografske izazove teritorija. U radu su prikazana iskustva iz procesa izrade dvanaest strategija za trideset i jedan grad i opštinu u Srbiji. Ovi instrumenti urbanog i teritorijalnog razvoja podstiču veće učešće lokalnih aktera u sprovođenju održivog razvoja i promovišu promenu u kulturi planiranja ka inkluzivnim, kolaborativnim praksama, i kao efekat proizvode kvalitetnija rešenja.
AB  - Territorial strategies are at the focus of sustainable and integral urban and territorial development in contemporary planning practice in the European Union. They reflect the current understanding of strategic planning as an adaptive process that requires change management. Within the framework of the technical assistance of the EU Local Development Programme (EU PRO Plus), the application of two tools in the local context was tested - Integrated Territorial Investments (eng. - ITI) and Sustainable Urban Development (eng. - SUD). These are modern tools that represent an effective instrument for integrating priority investments, thematic objectives and different funding sources within the territory. Territorial strategies are focused on the economic, environmental, climatic, social and demographic challenges of the territory. The paper presents experiences from the process of developing twelve strategies for thirty-one cities and municipalities in Serbia. These urban and territorial development tools promote greater participation of local stakeholders in the implementation of sustainable development and a shift in planning culture towards inclusive, collaborative practices, leading to better quality solutions.

AB  - In the light of the development of new construction systems and envelopes based on renewable and natural materials, that is recently obligatory for the EU member countries through New renovation Wave strategy, authors present research on the topic of energy renovation of buildings using renewable materials in modular systems and its possibilities in two developing countries. This paper presents energy savings, through case study of deep renovation of buildings, using timber modular systems for enveloping the characteristic example of residential building. Paper focuses on the period between 1971 and 1980, due to the considerable number of modular buildings designed during the peak of the construction progress and promotion of prefabricated buildings. Total potential energy savings for such building types is considered according to national typologies of residential buildings in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. Through a comparative analysis of these countries, the paper presents following parameters of buildings built in period 1971-1980: total number of buildings, total number of apartments, average energy need for heating - Qh,nd, and total energy need for heating before and after the renovation of the envelope applying standard measures from national typologies and applying timber modular envelope systems, which have the potential for deep renovation of buildings.

AB  - This article addresses the contemporary framework of housing at the EU level in the era of the ‘Housing at the Centre’ approach. More specifically, the research focuses on mass housing neighbourhoods (MHN) as the leading pattern of urban transformation in European cities in the second half of the 20th century, with the intention being to decode the possibilities for its rehabilitation in line with integrated approaches. The article combines (1) a review-based and systematically-oriented approach, in order to provide a state of the art of EU design taxonomy related to the housing issue, and, more specifically, related to MHN, with (2) a comparative study between EU and national design taxonomies, in order to address their conditionality and possible mismatches. The research considers design taxonomy to gain a more comprehensive insight into the content and coherence between programme values and the relevant EU documents (declarations, statements, policy positions, resolutions, reports, communications, charters, action plans, opinions) related to the housing issue, or broader urban issues that include housing as the scope of observation. The taxonomy enables a conceptual methodological framework for a systematic, consistent, and complete description of key research relations. Accordingly, the specific objective of this article is to establish an evaluation framework for reprogramming of MHN based on the EU design taxonomy through (1) the development of the programming matrix for evaluation, which corresponds to the value-based architectural programming model; and (2) introducing Serbian national design taxonomy, in order to demonstrate the anticipation of design values based on the EU taxonomy within the local context. The results indicate the need to examine and test regulatory experimental settings through middle-out approaches, whose central research perspective will be built parallel and coherently through bottom-up inputs, created as the result of collaborative approaches at the community level, and top-down inputs which are the result of the strategic framework established in relation to priorities at the European level.

AB  - The research presents approaches to the complex refurbishment of multi-family buildings
constructed during the mass construction period in Serbia. These buildings comprise a quarter of
Serbia’s housing stock, are characterized by high energy consumption for heating, and have major
spatial and organizational deficiencies: small apartments, outdated and inflexible spatial organization, and the absence of elevators. The subject of the research is the application of the methodology of complex and integrated refurbishment by adding volume to existing multi-family buildings with the goal of achieving higher energy efficiency while remodeling and modernizing residential units and improving vertical building communications. The research presents a comparative analysis of the energy performance and spatial organization of the existing building and three variants of building improvement: Case 1 (without volumetric additions), Case 2 (with volumetric additions—relocating vertical communications), and Case 3 (with volumetric additions—expanding usable living space).
Based on the Knaufterm simulations, the energy savings for heating energy consumption compared to the existing state are 81% in Case 1, 89% in Case 2, and 87% in Case 3. Based on predefined parameters of spatial comfort, a comparative analysis of spatial comfort in residential units was conducted for all three improvement variants.

AB  - Climate change threatens urban health, whether that refers to the human or environmental aspects of urban life.
At the same time, initiatives of city regeneration envision alternative forms of the urban environment, where
derelict spaces have the potential to be brought back to life in ways that would not compromise urban health.
Regeneration processes should utilise mitigation and adaptation strategies that consider the future needs and
anticipated role of cities within the context of the discourse about climate change, accounting for expected and
unforeseen impacts and regarding the city as an agent of action rather than a static territory, too complex to
change. Nevertheless, literature implicating these three parameters synchronously, namely, climate change,
cities, and health, has been scarce. This study aims to fill this gap through a systematic literature review,
exploring climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies that can be employed in urban regeneration efforts
seeking to mitigate climate-exacerbated phenomena and their impacts on urban health as well as identifying the
main trends and opportunities overlooked. Findings show that even though the emphasis is given to the physical
actions and impacts of climate change and urban health, an emerging theme is a need to engage civic society in
co-designing urban spaces. Synergistic relationships, collaborations and avoidance of lock-in situations appear to
be the most significant subtopics emerging from this literature review. One main recommendation is the promotion
of a community-driven, inclusive, participatory approach in regeneration projects. That will ensure that
different vulnerabilities can be adequately addressed and that diverse population groups will have equitable
health benefits.

AB  - Cilj ovog istraživanja je optimizacija fasadnog omotača, arhitektonskog objekta, integracijom vegetacionih modularnih elemenata. U radu se istražuju potencijali vegetacionih zidova u smanjenja utroška  energije potrebne za hlađenje objekta u letnjem periodu. Istraživanje je obuhvatilo analizu energetskih specifičnosti vegetacionih zidova i njihovu programsku integrakciju u urbanim gradskim ambijentima. Korišćenje elemenata vegetacionih zidova u arhitekturi otvorilo je nove projektantske mogućnosti i stvorilo izazove za projektante sa ciljem povećanja energetske efikasnosti objekata. U radu se vegetacioni zidovi tretiraju kao elementi zaštite arhitektonskih objekata od toplotnog pregrevanja. Analize su pokazale da vegetacija smanjuje kontaktnu temperaturu površina strukturalnih zidova objekta, dok isparavanje obezbeđuje pasivno hlađenje. Cilj istraživanja je da se ispitaju metode i tehnike, kojima se obezbeđuje široka primena vegetacionih zidova u arhitekturi postojećih i novih objekata kroz ispitivanja i pronalaženja preporuka za unapređenjem termičkih karakteristika fasadnih omotača objekta.

AB  - Even though the Serbian Network of Urban Morphology (SNUM) is one of the youngest networks within the International Seminar on Urban Form (ISUF), it is believed that each of the networks is grounded and developed on the knowledge coming from the synthesis of science, practice, and education. This research aims to trace the origins of urban morphology in the context of Serbia by assessing the academic engagement of key scholars over time. The research builds on previous findings concerning the origins and genesis of teaching urban morphology in Serbia and a review of academic and practical thoughts and actions in Belgrade. Using data collection, content analysis of annual Faculty books and programs, retrospective faculty books, internal documents, accreditation documents, lecture notes, books, and editions in the subject field and by diagramming and visualization, research tends to establish a broad and detailed framework for creating timelines and identifying clusters. Periodization identifies four different periods that are metaphorically named according to plant growth - formation of Fertile ground, Suitable climate, Sprouts, and Shoots while the clustering enables the detection of the continuity of urban morphology in three scientific fields in the faculty – architecture, urbanism, and history. The metaphor with plant growth is significant for underlining that the roots of any field of study are of immense importance, both for understanding its origin, starting ground, and intellectual heritage, and for its proper growth.

AB  - It has been widely assumed that responding to contemporary environmental challenges requires a shift towards an ecological approach to how we plan and design cities and that ecological urban design can bring positive changes to urban life and the environment. But in practice, “ecological design” is often interpreted in a simplistic way (e.g., as “green” technical solutions) and does not use the full potential of the urban design – ecology nexus.
The lecture provides an overview of different meanings of ecology and the ways they relate to urbanism in theory and practice. We explore how different understandings of “ecology” and “ecological” influence the purpose, scope, scale, and process of urban design. The aim is to reveal and discuss contemporary pathways to linking ecology and urban design and to outline the implications of the findings for architecture and urban design education.
We argue that a broader understanding of ecology is needed if we are to respond to environmental challenges in a creative and place-specific way through urban design. In the broad sense, ecology is about relations and relationships in different realms, at different scales and times. An ecological approach to urban design is, therefore, not only about knowing when and how to implement “ecological measures” as instant solutions, but also how to creatively restore broken links and develop strategies for the new, life-supporting ecologies to occur. By encouraging ecological thinking, academic education should help students develop ecological literacy and worldview.
