AB - Most of the modernist heritage buildings in New Belgrade are over half a century old. Additionally, there is a growing need for new residential and commercial spaces in the city of Belgrade, and New Belgrade with its incompleteness might integrate them. Digitalisation can play a key role in archiving, maintaining, and developing this part of a city, which underlines the necessity to convert its analogue form into a digital one as soon as possible. But how to efficiently perform that conversion? The parametric approach enables plenty of mutually similar elements to be generated for a short time, based on varying the values of parameters defined, which is especially useful when such elements are heavily repeated. Therefore, this research focuses on the geometric parametrisation of facade panels of various technological manufacturing processes and of diverse types of multifamily residential buildings located in the Central Zone of New Belgrade. It aims to identify key variable-wise characteristics of the facade panel morphology as well as to establish parameters relevant to describing these characteristics. The methodology implies multiple-case studies, where the parameters to be included in the parametrisation-wise algorithm are determined in relation to varying the panel morphology from group to group of mutually identical panels. The goal of the research, on the one hand, is to further develop a methodology implemented so as to become applicable to the study of other similar architectural heritage objects, whereas, on the other hand, it is to discover opportunities for examining the facade panel design from different aspects. Also, the paper contributes to the development of more efficient digitisation based on digital automation as well as to the greater encouragement of the restoration and conservation processes of facade panels. The usage of proposed parameters imposes itself as an efficient way to flexibly describe the morphology of considered facade panels of various technological manufacturing processes, regardless of the building type those panels belong to.

AB - The Žiča Monastery was built at the beginning of the 13th century, in Serbia, near the present-day town
of Kraljevo, in the village of Žiča, and was declared as a cultural monument of exceptional importance
in 1979. Even today, 800 years after its construction, the Žiča Monastery has high signifi cance and
represents an uninterrupted spiritual mission of the holy place for all Orthodox Serbs. The subject of the
research in this paper is the Dining Room within the Žiča Monastery property which was built in 1935.
The aim of the paper is to present a methodology which deals with sustainability and reconstruction
in case of adaptive re-use of historic buildings in accordance with modern needs. Restoration of
historic buildings that includes energy refurbishment measures will ensure successful reuse of
them. An appropriate systematic approach of the reconstruction of heritage buildings is crucial in its
preservation. All interventions on historic buildings, aimed at restoring and improving energy effi ciency,
are a reversible process and can be done in accordance with the conservation requirements.
The results of the research are recommendations for the restoration and adaptive re-use of historic
buildings, while meeting modern requirements for comfort and environmental protection. The greatest
contribution of this paper is the practical verifi cation of energy refurbishment of the restored historic
building, the Dining Room, by applying the principles and measures of energy effi ciency, maintaining
its authentic appearance. The possibility of practical verifi cation of the achieved results by applying
the principles and measures of energy effi ciency in the restoration of the listed historic building is of
great signifi cance.

AB - The protection and sustainable use of natural and cultural heritage in order to improve local identity
and quality of life, as well as the positioning of Serbian cities on the global map of eco-cultural
tourism, are still not suffi ciently recognized as development opportunities and therefore are not
prioritized in their development plans. Following the increase in interest, and thus the representation
of various types of tourism based on the integration of tangible and intangible cultural heritage and
natural values in the overall tourist offer, it is necessary to review the possibilities of such approach.
Smaller towns and settlements, which are frequently declining, are a particularly important group of
settlements whose sustainable development should be viewed through this perspective.
Many European countries have recognized the importance of cultural and natural heritage protection
and their potential for sustainable (urban) development, so in recent decades a large number of
national and pan-European projects have been launched with focus on this kind of approach and within
which various methodological processes are developed and pilot projects for their verifi cation are
funded. Raising their capacities for formulating, initiating and launching natural and cultural heritagebased
development projects, necessitates various types of training, participatory and collaborative
workshops, and the organization of various events aimed at informing and mobilizing the public.
As part of the international DANURB+ project, an Action Plan for the protection and sustainable use
of the natural and cultural heritage of Sombor was developed. The plan was created with the active
and continuous participation of those responsible for , as well as those interested in development.
The process is designed to help in the articulation of integral projects as well as their networking on
a local, national, and international level. The paper will present the methodological procedure, the
development process and the content of this plan.

AB - The central zone of New Belgrade represents an architectural and urban complex which construction
began in the early sixties of the twentieth century. In the period from the early sixties to the end
of the seventies, multi-family buildings were constructed in blocks: 21, 22, 23, 28, 29 and 30, and
today they are classifi ed as the most representative examples of domestic architecture. Based on its
architectural and urban characteristics, the central zone has the status of a spatial cultural-historical
entity from 2021. Although this zone represents a cultural asset, the multi-family buildings in the
blocks are examples of buildings that in the past few decades have not undergone any planned
renovations of facade envelopes. The goal of the work is to present the possibilities of restoring
facade envelopes through the process of staged renovations while considering ways of treating
the envelopes that potentially preserve the original appearance - given that the selected buildings
are treated as architectural heritage. Different reinforced concrete facade assemblies and existing
damages also require different approaches in staged renovations, as a legitimate solution to this
problem. Unplanned and unorganised works aimed at the restoration of facade envelopes led to
signifi cant damage and general degradation of both their non-transparent and transparent zones.
Despite such problems, the owners of the apartments in the buildings were forced, due to the lack
of organised renovations, to individually solve the encountered problems of facade assemblies. This
primarily refers to the replacement of dilapidated windows and doors in facade envelopes, while the
treatment of non-transparent zones was not carried out according to plan. This led to unfavourable
situations in which the degradation of facades is not prevented. By applying staged methods of
renovation and activating tenants, these problems can potentially be overcome, which is the main
goal of this paper.

AB - This paper focuses on the concept of more-than-human design, which involves the inclusion of non-human actors, such as technology and infrastructure, in the design process. Specifically, the paper examines the technology of the urban environment as infrastructure and its potential use in designing complex and dynamic urban spaces that cater to different types of users.
The paper explores how environmental data can act as a bridge between humans and nature, promoting empathy towards more-than-human perspectives. It emphasizes the need to question the human-centric approach to design and to form new design practices that integrate different abilities and contextual significance of data.
The aim is to establish interactions between humans, objects, and other things through design practices that recognize and integrate different abilities, both human and artificial while overcoming technological determinism that dominates many narratives. This is achieved by expanding design theory and methodology towards "more-than-human design." The paper presents a review of existing approaches and methods from various fields as new input in considering subjective parameters of urban experience and new design practices in line with "more-than-human design" paradigms.
The paper illustrates the urban user experience through the example of pedestrian traffic in interchange systems. While subjective parameters of users can be shown through various surveys, the paper emphasizes the importance of visual perception in collecting spatial information and its connection with cognitive processes. Developing eye-tracking technologies is becoming increasingly popular in spatial cognition research. The paper proposes using visualization of eye-tracking data to create mental maps that help in the cognitive mapping of the urban pedestrian experience in complex processes. The processed results can be used as input for user interfaces and new design practices. Designers need to take the underpinning technology seriously before they can design with it.

AB - Urban design belongs to the professional fi elds where public welfare is of great concern. This means
that common practice in urban design involves the various forms of the active participation of
different actors and stakeholders, positioning it as a signifi cant segment in the professional ethos of
urban designers. Hence, public participation is also one of the integral parts of higher education in
contemporary urban design.
Urban design curriculum usually has a few courses dedicated for participation as the core topic, while
other courses indirectly touch it. Their practical side is often in the form of public audits, surveys,
questionnaires, interviews, which students conduct as an on-site or online training with citizens,
experts and/or stakeholders. The form of a workcamp, where students-volunteers work and live
together with local community on a short-term basis and for a not-for-profi t cause, is rarer simply
because it is more demanding to be included into formal higher education. However, such workcamps
have many advantages related to learning about the participation process, such as democratic
awareness, mutual understanding, increased independence, and self-reliance.
This paper presents one building camp for students, organised within DANUrB+ INTERREG Project
in Golubac, Serbia, in June 2022. The aim of the camp was to realise, materialise a small scale
‘design and build’ urban project which connects with the revealed underused local heritage or cultural
potential, as a tangible implementation of an intangible potential. The paper intends to show how this
process involved both students and the local community to jointly develop, design and build a smallscale
public square in the Danube Riverfront of Golubac Town.

Shrinking and Non-Global Cities: Similarities and Differences

AB - The concept of shrinking cities has become well-known among both scientists and practitioners
in urban planning and design. Basically, shrinking cities experience many downturn trends due to
structural problems in local economy. The most notorious trend is certainly population shrinkage,
by which the concept got this name two decades ago. The other ones, such as a brain drain, limited
employment opportunities or population ageing, are not less problematic for the future urban
prospects, too.
Nevertheless, the focus in the current research on shrinking cities has changed last decade. The overall
focus on the effects of deindustrialisation has slowly receded to other subtopics related to various
socio-economic constraints, such as relation between regional and urban shrinkage, suburbanisation
vs. central city development, spatial peripherality, etc. Many such new subtopics touch the huge
theme of globalisation and global cities, as well as connected topics of spatial networking, centrality,
and multi-layer connectivity. Interestingly, the opposite phenomenon – non-global cities – has not
been adequately addressed within it despite the most of cities globally belongs to this group.
This research is dedicated to explain the term of non-global cities as a new paradigm in urban studies
and tries to link it with the phenomenon of shrinking cities. The comparison of the tenets of shrinking
cities are compared with the general elements of non-global cities to fi nd the main similarities
and differences between them, enshrining additionally the phenomenon of non-global cities. The
conclusion of this research reveals that both of them, although present independent concepts,
overlap in the certain regional and typological contexts.

AB - The most represented multi-family housing stock within the cities of Serbia was built in the period
from 1946 to 1970. 25% of the total multi-family stock of Serbia consists of buildings built in that
period. This multi-family housing stock is at the centre of discussion due to its energy, functional and spatial-organisational obsolescence. Designed with the aim of providing apartments for as many people as possible in the short term, these buildings are characterised by small apartments, outdated and rigid spatial organisation, inadequate dimensioning of spatial units and small window openings on the facades. In addition, these buildings have a high energy consumption for heating. The subject of the research includes the analysis of the application of complex and integrated refurbishment by adding exoskeleton to existing multi-family buildings in order to achieve high energy effi ciency of buildings and increase the space of residential units, as well as improve vertical communications of buildings. The exoskeleton represents a spatial structure that is added to the existing building with the aim of spatial-functional and energy improvement. The paper will present various possibilities for the position of the exoskeleton on the envelope of the existing building, based on which it can be determined which spatial-organisational and functional characteristics of the existing building are being improved. Based on the predetermined typology of residential multi-family buildings, a classifi cation of possible positions of the exoskeleton on the envelope of each type of multi-family building will be made. The goal of the research is to review the advantages and limitations of exoskeleton application in different types of multi-family residential buildings and to determine the possibilities of improving the spatial-organisational, functional and energy performance of existing multi-family buildings by applying complex and integrated refurbishment using exoskeleton.

Practicing Dialectical Materialism: The Balkan House and Architecture in Socialist Yugoslavia

AB - This article examines relationships between architecture and ideology in socialist
Yugoslavia by exploring the cultural interpretation and appropriation of the Balkan
house in achieving modern, specifically Yugoslav architectural expression. Through the
contextualization of the period’s different narratives on the Ottoman vernacular and
various architectural designs related to it, the aim is to demonstrate how Yugoslav architects relied on Marxism to appropriate vernacular architecture into the modernist discourses. Dialectical materialism was used as a key for the interpretation of the
opposition between what was seen as the negative and positive elements of the
Balkan house, which challenged banal polarization between the traditional and modern
and led to a more nuanced understanding of backwardness and progress in vernacular
architecture. The idea of architectural metamorphoses of vernacular to modern
forms was justified by evolution and revolution, the basic concepts of the Marxist understanding of processes in society and culture. The Yugoslav interest in the Balkan house
represented a living, perceivable example of how the relationships between tradition and
modernity, the past and the present, as well as men and their environment, became
incorporated into new architecture of ‘socialism with a humane face’, which stood at
the heart of Yugoslav social and political experiment.

AB - In the period between the proclamation of royal dictatorship and the assassination of King Alexander I, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia was characterised by the dynamics of competing visions of Yugoslavism. Questions concerning the identity of a Yugoslav nation-to-be, in terms of both national unity and diversity of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, were held not only in political discourse, but also through architecture and the visual culture. This article explores the ideological roles of the Bridge of King Alexander I, built between 1929 and 1934 to connect Belgrade with the ex-Habsburg town of Zemun, which carried not only heavy transport but also powerful political messages. The bridge’s construction prompted a widespread public controversy, representing a vivid testimony to rivalries, tensions and discontents between different ideas about the Yugoslav nation, underpinned by both political and professional agendas.

AB - Medieval town of Maglič is located in the Republic of Serbia, on the right bank of the Ibar River, about 25km southwest of Kraljevo, on a narrow plateau of a rocky ridge which dominates the entire
environment. According to historical sources, the town was built in the 14th century. A significant number of detected buildings which have largely been preserved testify on intensive building activities. The purpose of the work is to indicate, through the critical analysis and evaluation, the advantages and disadvantages of certain methods of protection and presentation of the remains, the integration of the old – new, but also to identify the elements which should be incorporated into the future attitude towards protection and presentation of medieval fortified towns in order to change and improve certain methods. New methods have to follow more consistently recent international charters and recommendations, and should be based on contemporary trends in protection, revitalization and presentation, which is particularly reflected in more liberal application of new materials and new constructive structures in protection and reconstruction, application of modern technologies (3D animation) in the presentation of the sites and the like. The work will present pros and cons of various proposals for the reconstruction and revitalization of the medieval fortress of Maglič, which contains significant historical, cultural, natural and architectural values, which should be preserved and presented in an appropriate manner, as a unique cultural landscape. This research will be a significant contribution to the objective and critical analysis of
the main modern methodological approaches and the achieved results in the sphere of protection,
revitalization and presentation of the medieval fortress of Maglič, with the basic idea of preservation of the authenticity and integrity of the existing stone remains of the fortress, with accessibility and paths management which would allow safe movement of visitors. Future approaches to revitalization and presentation of Maglič and its surroundings have to be in accordance with the principles of revitalization, especially in the context of preserving the authenticity and integrity of the landscape, since a cultural landscape implies they are separate parts of the scenery highlighted as areas of specific interaction of man and nature, of which Maglič is also part. By the revitalization of the fortress, the town would acquire a symbol of recognition and unique area which would become the backbone of development of cultural tourism of the whole Republic of Serbia.

revitalization and presentation of the medieval fortress of Maglič, with the basic idea of preservation of the authenticity and integrity of the existing stone remains of the fortress, with accessibility and paths management which would allow safe movement of visitors. By the revitalization of the fortress, the town would acquire a symbol of recognition and unique area which would become the backbone of development of cultural tourism of the whole Republic of Serbia.",

AB - One of the most significant novelties in urban planning last decades has been the inclusion of ICT tools. The most common approach is to form geographical and territorial information systems (GIS and TIS) to create, monitor and visualise urban plans. However, accurate statistical data is necessary in this process, which can be a challenge for the sectors with fast development, such as a tourism. It exemplifies a fast developing, unconventional and often hard-to-control sector. Official statistical data for tourism quickly become outdated for urban planning. In the other side, tourism has vibrant social-media coverage and rich available e-data shared through it. Although such e-data can be found everywhere today, it is still new for formal documents like urban plans.

The core aim of this research is to show how the e-data in social media can be utilised to analyse city space for a new urban plan. The case in the research in the “Venac” Historic Core of Sombor. Despite being the best-preserved medium-sized city in Serbia, Sombor peripheral location in the country hindered its development. Nevertheless, the recent rise of cultural tourism means that Sombor has been rediscovered for tourists. The city authorities recently initiated a new urban plan for the regeneration of “Venac” Area, where local experts and the team from the Faculty of Architecture in Belgrade worked together with e-data from online social media to address the recent tourism development in planning measures. This research analyses four locally popular social media applications: Instagram, Google Maps, Google reviews, and Snapchat.

AB - COVID-19 has severely affected almost every aspect of our everyday lives, especially the use of open greenspace (OGS) in urban settings, which has proven to have a significant role in increasing overall public health and well-being. Hence, the restricted usage of these spaces should be reconsidered. This research aims to analyze the sensitive nature of OGS usage (1) during the pandemic from the perspective of users’ perceived safety and (2) after the pandemic to assess the possible long-term effects. Additionally, this research proposed that location-tracking mobile applications could lead to an increased frequency of OGS visits. The methodology contains detailed background research and two surveys. One survey was conducted during the pandemic in 2020 (sample size n = 412) and was repeated post-pandemic in 2024 (sample n = 451). The 2020 questionnaire A includes questions about the duration, frequency, and activities of OGS usage while focusing on the perceived safety and possibilities of monitoring OGS visits using mobile apps. The 2024 survey represents the continuation of the 2020 survey, focusing on the post-pandemic state of OGS. The statistical analysis is separated into a descriptive data analysis, various χ2 independence tests and a machine learning safety prediction. The results indicate how COVID-19 could affect OGS usage and how app-related physical safety enhancements during the pandemic cannot be statistically distinguished from those in the post-pandemic period. Although the interest in location-tracking mobile applications has statistically decreased in 2024, the majority of the total 863 participants stated that applications could increase their feeling of perceived safety. The added value of this research is that it considers age and gender roles in analyzing OGS usage in the context of a pandemic.

AB - The industrial heritage of the city of Belgrade is the focus of this research, which highlights
the possibilities of preserving industrial heritage from the perspective of a contemporary context
and sustainable development. Guided by theoretical principles on the preservation of cultural and
industrial heritage, their values, authenticity and spirit of place, as well as the idea of the necessity
of integrating industrial heritage into the contemporary context, this paper aims to examine the
possibilities for the preservation of industrial heritage following theoretically established principles,
with the introduction of new uses and sustainable solutions. The analysis of the case studies of
Belgrade’s industrial heritage presented in this paper results from research conducted by the teachers, associates and students of the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Architecture. The research focuses on the possibilities of translating the principles of preserving cultural and industrial heritage from their theoretical definition to practical application. The students’ conceptual solutions for protection, revitalisation and presentation of the analysed case studies represent the research results. An important aspect of this paper is defining the criteria for valorising students’ conceptual solutions, which are aligned with the principles of preserving cultural heritage and establishing sustainable development. The valorisation of students’ conceptual solutions through a defined set of criteria indicates real possibilities for the simultaneous preservation of all the values of industrial heritage and its transformation into a social, ecological and economic resource of the contemporary city.

AB - ‘Albergo Diffuso’ is an innovative concept in urban planning and design, where a hotel is dispersed through urban fabric, usually occupying several historic buildings under one ownership in a smaller community – village, town or small city. In this way, Albergo Diffuso enables their guests to easily participate in local urban life. The roots of the concept are were related to the urban decline of small historic settlements in Italy in the late 20th century. Hence, this concept belongs to international efforts to regenerate small shrinking cities as a new normality in urbanisation. However, two concepts – Albergo Diffuso and shrinking cities – have not been adequately interlinked; usually the physical aspect (‘design’) of Albergo Diffuso has been in spotlight. The other important issues, such as the adaptations of local urban planning and regulative documents and their impact on local property market have not been properly considered.
This is the presentation of one such attempt in the City of Sombor in northwestern Serbia. Sombor ‘old town’, known as “Venac/Coronet”, is under state protection as the best-preserved core of any medium sized city at national level. Nevertheless, the relative isolation of Sombor from major communication corridors has caused its significant economical and demographic shrinkage last decades. The recent development of cultural tourism along the nearby Danube has slowed this process, but it has also imposed new challenges for the urban heritage of Sombor, such as a collision between developing property market and the aforementioned protective measures for local heritage. One of the efforts of local authorities to mediate this is to create a new urban plan for “Venac”, where local urban experts propose innovative measures, including regulations for Albergo Diffuso projects. The aim is to explain work on this plan and expected effects on urban development and local property market. The Sombor case is even more important, as it can be a national pilot to address sustainable tourism development in shrinking cities.

AB - Pedestrian behaviour is defined by a significant number of factors, but the readability of space is one of the key prerequisites for observation and all other pedestrian activities. The focus of the paper is on the relation between legibility and readability. By analogy space with the written text, legibility is focused on small parts and signs, while readability is based on the whole and on associations, that are emerging in our minds with possible common space usage scenarios. This paper tries to divide which urban elements affect legibility, and which one on readability for pedestrians to help transform networks in neighbourhoods between transport planning and pedestrian behaviour. Interesting areas for analysis are overlaps of pedestrian and road traffic. So, the study area is mega blocks in New Belgrade - block 23 and block 30, especially the parts of the pedestrian network. This approach starts by identifying key elements of legibility and readability and analysing how the road traffic affects the pedestrian network and supported activities in mega blocks. The methodology consists of forming evaluation criteria based on literature review and examining it in the study area through behavioural observations. After the assessment and analysis are done, the results as the elements in two groups of perception data can contribute to guidelines for redesigning the space in the function of pedestrian movement.

AB - Urban morphological approaches to open space are often overlooked in interdisciplinary studies, particularly due to the complexity of spaces left-over or spontaneously generated. This paper focuses on these under-represented spaces, integrating the pedestrian perspective into the analysis. Belgrade, Serbia, serves as a case study, revealing remnants of open public spaces within the post-socialist context, shaped by historical urban planning principles and recent socio-economic shifts. In this paper, all of these spaces are considered as liminal spaces from a pedestrian perspective, accommodating individual and collective users with various cultural meanings. The aim is to create a potential classification of pedestrian liminal spaces in post-socialist Belgrade. The study employs a theoretical and observational approach, combining quantitative assessments of urban morphological indicators with qualitative analyses using the urban structural unit (USU) approach. By observing the use of space and detecting social dynamics, the study proposes three types of liminal spaces from both morphological and cultural aspects. In comparative analysis between these spaces, morphology and organization imply a possible measure of spatial quality. This work can contribute to a new way of reading and analysing contemporary open public spaces and help in their transformation, especially in a post-socialist context.

AB - Using sustainable building materials is one of the key methods for minimising the negative environmental impacts of the global construction industry. Bio-based buildings building materials, such as hemp-lime concrete, are considered more sustainable, as they make use of a renewable raw material and can sequester CO2 from the atmosphere. Studies have shown that hemp-lime concrete can have a favourable global warming potential, though the life cycle of building materials affects a wide variety of negative environmental phenomena that should also be considered. Studies examining the life cycle of hemp-lime concrete have so far primarily focused on the material itself. Though the exterior surface of a hemp-lime concrete wall needs to be protected and have a finish applied to it, few studies have considered the environmental impacts of coated hemp-lime concrete wall constructions. Using life cycle assessment methodology, through a wide range of environmental impact categories, the study analysed the environmental impacts of applying lime putty and sand coatings to a hemp-lime concrete wall in pessimistic, average and optimistic scenarios, It also compared the environmental impacts of four types of appropriate wall finishes and the impacts of applying varying finish renewal regimes in the use phase. It was found that applying lime putty and sand finishes to the exterior and interior surface of a hemp lime concrete wall increased the total global warming potential by 19.054–30.793 kgCO2eq and had a noticeable effect on all other impact categories. It was found that while no one finish type could be considered globally superior to the others, in a majority of circumstances applying lime-based coatings resulted in lower embodied environmental impacts, than applying a ventilated façade with timber cladding.

AB - This paper presents an authentic approach in architectural education that connects architecture,
interior architecture, furniture design, industrial and graphic design. The research is based on the multi-year educational process on the two courses: In 1:1 Architecture of utility object and Design through detail, on the Master's academic studies at the University of Belgrade - Faculty of Architecture. This paper aims to present the creative potentials of the architectural design process which, within the framework of education, tends to overcome the negative aspects of the contemporary local context, which commercialize designed object into a
marketing product of sale and trade, devoid of aesthetic and ethical values, identity and individuality, for whom profitability is the only necessary quality. The paper refers to an internal faculty joke: "There is danger that it will be built!" through the courses results in which students actually fully realised their projects in a 1:1 scale, as a ready-to-use artefacts of a trans-disciplinary nature.

AB - This article is based on the analysis of the referential relationship within three concepts for the development of the urban matrix: High-rise City by Ludwig Hilberseimer (1924), No-Stop City by studio Archizoom Associati (1969), and Stop City by architectural office DOGMA (2007). The three projects represent a critique of the growth and development of the city within the economic system and the sociocultural context of the time. This research argues that each project finds its formal expression through referencing the former, adopting the programmatic, formative, and linguistic structures, which enable the reading of the authors’ interpretations and positions in relation to the generic properties of the urban matrix. Furthermore, the research aims to reveal the referential relationship between the aforementioned projects by comparing the critical positions they represent and the elements that constitute them.

AB - The quality of the environment is of vital importance for urban areas,
and streets and squares, as the specific form of open public space, represent
an essential part of the city. In urban areas, total road traffic
kilometres will grow by 40 % between 1995 and 2030. This particular
research focuses on the secondary streets that represent an integral
part of a city center not only in a functional way but also in a formal,
structural and cultural sense.
The research aims to analyze the overall quality of urban streets in the
center of Belgrade. The paper represents the segment of the research
done alongside approximately 500 students from the University of Belgrade,
Faculty of Architecture, as a part of the teaching course entitled:
Urban Design of Open Public Space as the research polygon of more
than 100 streets from the central urban borough in Belgrade were chosen.
The principal methodology is based on the Criteria & Indicators
network analysis, with five selected quality criteria: safety, comfort,
accessibility, readability, and liveability.
Results of the research represent the quality assessment of streets,
identifying specific problems and potentials in the context of open
public space in the city center. Therefore, one of the expected contributions
of the paper are the guidelines and knowledge base for upgrading
the pedestrian network and urban design of open public space - the
streets in Belgrade's inner historical city center, thus improving the
overall quality of life.

AB - The paper focuses on the border towns of the Republic of North Macedonia (RNM), geographically
located in the eastern and western part of the country, highlighting the specificities of their
morphology in the context of their recent development and/or decline. The selected examples belong
to two different planning regions of the RNM: the East region – Delchevo, and the Southwest region -
Struga. Providing an overview of the identified directions and patterns of their urban expansion, it will
be possible to determine the morphological features which have both affected and reflected their
general urban transformations. Currently, the condition of the border towns from the East region
indicates the increasing marginalisation and, consequently - decline, while those from the Southwest
region register progress and growth on the socio-economic and spatial level. Due to these drastic
differences, the paper will provide a comparative analysis of their urban form, simultaneously
targeting both the micro and the macro level. Considering the latest studies on urban morphology and
its relationship with overall urban development, the paper will also address the identified problems
and trends, proposing the planning recommendations for the future transformations and their
sustainability in the long run.

AB - In its jubilee year of 215 years, the University of Belgrade and the Faculty of Architecture as its constituent member had an opportunity to host the 30th International Seminar on Urban Form Conference (ISUF2023). This year’s conference titled Praxis of Urban Morphology presented a great opportunity to discuss the process by which this discipline is enacted, embodied, and realized. The ISUF 2023 organization committee’s endeavor was to build on the previous experience and ideas, and to direct activities toward systematization and synthesis at an international level, aiming to embody these ideas into operational knowledge. The conference was developed in a manner to provide a framework for reflecting on ISUF community intellectual knowledge coming both from the practical and scientific arenas.

The very conference included total of 227 presentations with 580 authors (220 present on site), with representation of participants from 43 countries. The conference was developed in 4 tracks: A. Good in Planning, Landscapes and Townscapes, B. Culture Space, Common Space and Personalities, C. History of Ideas and Challenges and D. Programming and Rethinking Concepts. Conference proceedings were developed in two parts.
