AB - Nature-based solutions (NBS) are frequently implemented without taking the system’s perspective into account and with the main focus on technical and economic issues of implementation. This study was conducted to test the hypothesis on the potential synergistic effects between circularity and NBS to holistically tackle urban challenges. The main objective is to establish preliminary insights on the obstacles and perspectives of NBS integration and implementation, through a questionnaire set up by the network of experts gathered within the COST Action CA17133 Circular City. The following research questions arise: (i) what differences exist in the level of NBS application according to the variance of engaged countries; and (ii) what are the main obstacles and perspectives for the NBS implementation in order to holistically tackle urban challenges, enhancing the sustainable connection among urban environment, nature, and human well-being. To go beyond the current state-of-the-art and reflect on the research conducted within the Circular City Action, this study aims to open a multi-geographical academic dialogue across Europe and beyond and to move towards a holistic approach to circular cities. Accordingly, this study is: (1) multi-geographical and context-based, providing input for thirty-three EU countries and four non-EU countries to give an overview of the main obstacles and perspectives of NBS implementation, and (2) approach-directed, aiming to formulate a holistic approach to deal with societal challenges. This document intends to provide qualitative and quantitative insight into the potentials and obstacles of NBS implementation in Europe, as well as to motivate further discussion and research to achieve holistic and sustainable cities

AB - When we say “the scale of protected area, territorial systems and landscape” we are using more or less only the terms used to describe territory, all of which include one physical element – space. Besides space, implemented in these terms we find another crucial element and that is culture. An event dedicated to a reflection between multiple levels included in the process of place development, administrators, scholars, entrepreneurs and active citizens on the prospects for sustainable innovation of the Monti Navegna and Cervia Nature Reserve, has put the focus of this contribution on understanding the human aspect of landscape and implementation of culture and ourselves in the natural surroundings and creating the semi artificial landscapes. New ways of considering our surroundings through aspects of knowledge, senses and smart tools are the topics brought up in this paper in hope of emphasizing the importance of cohesion between all levels included in the process of reaching for the desirable future when it comes to landscape.

AB - Studying the development of digital technology in architecture during the last thirty years highlights the opportunity for exploring the process of positioning the architect within an architectural approach based on the continual digital data-driven design and realization, using the example of the “digital chain” principle. Digital tools and processes have evolved driven by technological advancements and supporting the architectural design, but also challenging the influence and role of the architect as designer.
Accordingly, the positioning of the architect within the design and realization of architecture is a process that constantly is developing, evolving, progressing and changing, but not simultaneously with the development of technology. The paper investigates this with the focus on the “digital chain”, which is the continual approach that links architectural design and realization by coding the process and involving digital fabrication (machine and material) and the architect in each step of architectural accomplishments.
Methodologically, this research is based on overlapping the information of a (rapid) review of the continual digital data-driven design principle (example of “digital chain”) over time and the conventional (analog) design focused both on architect’s discourse, role and influence in the current and future design and implementation of works of architecture. The paper does not define the exact position of the architect in the “digital chain” because the process is further evolving and also depends on the type of fabrication, taking into account the freedom of choice of the architect. It does, however, identify the zone and type of influence of the process effects on the architect, and determines the necessity and role of the architect as a designer in the process.
The work aims to define and outline the currently developing conceptual framework of the positioning of architects, while a precise definition of the position would hinder the architect from expressing creativity. However, new research directions open a scientific field of constant redefinition of the design process with architectural influence in terms of activities and characteristics of the role of the architect within continual digital approaches to designing architecture.

AB - The approach to urban planning and development of public spaces supporting healthy lifestyles and well-being within the wider context of green infrastructure in Belgrade, Serbia, has undergone an observable and measurable shift. Various factors have contributed to a decline in the planning and implementation of these spaces, particularly for newly designed residential developments, with the most significant prominence observed since the beginning of the 21st century.
This paper seeks to examine the spatial and non-spatial factors that contributed to the decrease
in the previously established urban planning approach for green public spaces. Changes in laws
and regulations, transformation in lifestyle perspectives, and the impact of globalization can all
be attributed to the resulting spatial impacts. This paper will utilize five case studies, focusing on
residential blocks within the Novi Beograd municipality (Blocks 19a, Block 30, Block A, Belville and
West 65), to illustrate the shift in urban planning perspective and its outcomes. Through a comparative study of these cases, a clear change in approach when conceiving and implementing green public spaces is demonstrated.
In addition to providing a comprehensive overview of the resulting spatial impacts stemming from the examined changes in perspective, this research will present a set of applicable guidelines for future developments, encompassing both theoretical and practical aspects. As urban planning practices for new developments increasingly disregard the requirements of public spaces that support healthy lifestyles, notably in human interaction and well-being, this topic remains continuously relevant.

Zaključna razmatranja govore o neophodnosti interdisciplinarnog pristupa i osnaživanju različitih aktera, sa ciljem održivog razvoja i balansa urbane bezbednosti i arhitektonsko-urbanističke regulative.

AB - In the circumstances of the 21st-century digital and technological turn, and due to the burst of the cosmopolitan way of living, the urban environment has gradually transformed in its appearance and identity. The loss of object singularity in urban context due to continuous variability and functional indeterminacy blurs the boundaries between architectural and urban scale, personal and social experience. Through an interdisciplinary framework, this paper deals with the fluidity phenomenon instrumentalisation through value-based research of renominated architectural practices in creating an authentic methodological research model that connects urban dynamics and architectural design methods, techniques and instruments in shaping a contemporary spatial experience. The resulting methodological model employs an analytic graphic narrative to formulate a strategy integrating fluidity into the process of architectural design. The paper explains how architectural design, as a cultural practice, employs fluidity to incorporate dynamics and needs, strategically enhancing the expression of urban values, requirements, and narratives.

AB - The protection and sustainable use of natural and cultural heritage in order to improve local identity
and quality of life, as well as the positioning of Serbian cities on the global map of eco-cultural
tourism, are still not suffi ciently recognized as development opportunities and therefore are not
prioritized in their development plans. Following the increase in interest, and thus the representation
of various types of tourism based on the integration of tangible and intangible cultural heritage and
natural values in the overall tourist offer, it is necessary to review the possibilities of such approach.
Smaller towns and settlements, which are frequently declining, are a particularly important group of
settlements whose sustainable development should be viewed through this perspective.
Many European countries have recognized the importance of cultural and natural heritage protection
and their potential for sustainable (urban) development, so in recent decades a large number of
national and pan-European projects have been launched with focus on this kind of approach and within
which various methodological processes are developed and pilot projects for their verifi cation are
funded. Raising their capacities for formulating, initiating and launching natural and cultural heritagebased
development projects, necessitates various types of training, participatory and collaborative
workshops, and the organization of various events aimed at informing and mobilizing the public.
As part of the international DANURB+ project, an Action Plan for the protection and sustainable use
of the natural and cultural heritage of Sombor was developed. The plan was created with the active
and continuous participation of those responsible for , as well as those interested in development.
The process is designed to help in the articulation of integral projects as well as their networking on
a local, national, and international level. The paper will present the methodological procedure, the
development process and the content of this plan.

AB - This paper presents an authentic approach in architectural education that connects architecture,
interior architecture, furniture design, industrial and graphic design. The research is based on the multi-year educational process on the two courses: In 1:1 Architecture of utility object and Design through detail, on the Master's academic studies at the University of Belgrade - Faculty of Architecture. This paper aims to present the creative potentials of the architectural design process which, within the framework of education, tends to overcome the negative aspects of the contemporary local context, which commercialize designed object into a
marketing product of sale and trade, devoid of aesthetic and ethical values, identity and individuality, for whom profitability is the only necessary quality. The paper refers to an internal faculty joke: "There is danger that it will be built!" through the courses results in which students actually fully realised their projects in a 1:1 scale, as a ready-to-use artefacts of a trans-disciplinary nature.

Sustainable Fluidity in Aesthetical Perspectives of Contemporary Architecture: Post-Industrial Development of Danube’s Waterfront in Belgrade

AB - This paper aims to position the aesthetic perspective of contemporary architecture in the context of urban sustainability. Fluidity is the main concept this research is based on. The phenomenon of fluidity is defined by the constant variability of contextual conditions, hyper-production of sensations and perceptual experiences in modern cities, which increasingly affect notions of aesthetic values in architecture and urban space in general. In the modern context in which dynamics of the exchange of information is the main carrier of cultural value systems, the experience of architectural space can be understood as a kind of communication tool that is realised through direct, sensory experience. The aesthetic dimension of architecture articulates this act, as a form of cultural exchange, and interaction defines the degree of the associativity of the content, controlling the way of interaction between the user and the environment and forming a certain experience. The importance of spatial experience in the cultural dimension of architecture is very important in aesthetical perspectives of
sustainable development, which position the experience of space in the domain of the activation of feelings, emotions, and communication with all senses, as well as diversity, inclusion, and well-being. By the actuality and importance of dealing with the topics of re-use of built, industrial, heritage and the New European Bauhaus design curricula, this research intersects the main postulates of new approaches with the results of teaching experience from Diploma Master studio at the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Architecture, led by professor Nebojša Fotirić and Teaching Assistant Bojana Jerković-Babović. The graduate studio topic is Making of a city: post-industrial development of the area between Dunavska Street and the Danube‘s Belgrade waterfront, where the importance of
possible instrumentalizations of theoretical perspectives in research design, expanding the existing scope of architectural design and operational knowledge and skills, is recognized.

from 1946 to 1970. 25% of the total multi-family stock of Serbia consists of buildings built in that
period. This multi-family housing stock is at the centre of discussion due to its energy, functional and spatial-organisational obsolescence. Designed with the aim of providing apartments for as many people as possible in the short term, these buildings are characterised by small apartments, outdated and rigid spatial organisation, inadequate dimensioning of spatial units and small window openings on the facades. In addition, these buildings have a high energy consumption for heating. The subject of the research includes the analysis of the application of complex and integrated refurbishment by adding exoskeleton to existing multi-family buildings in order to achieve high energy effi ciency of buildings and increase the space of residential units, as well as improve vertical communications of buildings. The exoskeleton represents a spatial structure that is added to the existing building with the aim of spatial-functional and energy improvement. The paper will present various possibilities for the position of the exoskeleton on the envelope of the existing building, based on which it can be determined which spatial-organisational and functional characteristics of the existing building are being improved. Based on the predetermined typology of residential multi-family buildings, a classifi cation of possible positions of the exoskeleton on the envelope of each type of multi-family building will be made. The goal of the research is to review the advantages and limitations of exoskeleton application in different types of multi-family residential buildings and to determine the possibilities of improving the spatial-organisational, functional and energy performance of existing multi-family buildings by applying complex and integrated refurbishment using exoskeleton.

AB - The inner core of Sombor, known as “Venac”, is probably the best‑preserved one among
medium‑sized cities in Serbia. The stagnation of Sombor during the 20th century and its urban
shrinkage in the 21st century have prevented significant transformations of the core, enabling its
preservation under state protection as an urban heritage site. However, the recent rise of cultural
tourism has triggered urban regeneration. As the city is still unprepared for this change, this regeneration
has mostly omitted the inner core. Realising this, local representatives and experts have
started rethinking innovative approaches to its regeneration, including the concept of Albergo Diffuso.
This sustainable concept is created to revive the historic cores of small, shrinking cities and towns.
Basically, it represents a hotel situated in several old buildings dispersed throughout a historic urban
fabric, fitting perfectly into the regeneration of Venac. However, the current lack of precise spatial
indicators and thresholds makes their incorporation into the planning process challenging. Considering
this, this study focuses on the current spatial development of tourism in Venac, analysing the
elements that would support and facilitate the application of this concept in the future. This article
also proposes a set of new planning measures to support a strategically organised approach—from
the emphasis on urban reuse and physical renewal to multileveled linking of basic concept conditions
to the prioritization of pedestrian‑friendly places and the application of innovative urban design in
open public spaces. By connecting the selected Albergo Diffuso approach with spatial development
and its analysis, this study also contributes to the spatial imprint of the concept’s implementation.

AB - For achieving transition towards a climate neutral, cleaner and healthier environment we must tackle the issues which contribute most to climate change and pollution, through fossil fuels excessive consumption and inefficient use of other resources. Construction and operation of buildings is certainly one of these issues, with estimation that buildings consume about 40% of the total energy (EU). One of the strategies that is considered most effective in making the building sector more resource and energy efficient is refurbishment of old buildings, which no longer meet criteria for achieving adequate comfort with minimal energy use. Their refurbishment, opposed to their demolition and construction of new ones, brings numerous environmental benefits, and also drives the transitions of entire cities and communities towards a more resilient and better environment. Recent policies (Energy Efficiency Directives, EU Green Deal, The New European Bauhaus initiative) also highlight the importance of building refurbishment and set goals for ambitious refurbishment rates for the entire building stock. At the same time, they highlight the importance of refurbishment of public buildings, because of the positive implications it has in terms of showcase and educational purposes. This paper presents the case study of refurbishment options for a characteristic municipal building, through cost-benefit analysis of different refurbishment scenarios.

AB - Abstract: The paper sheds light on Gaston Bachelard’s concept of vertical time. The topic is elaborated in relation to intrinsic time by Étienne Souriau which concerns the plastic arts. It corresponds to the time operator formalism of complex systems whose defining feature is the existence of the intrinsic time operator. The complex system model is based upon statistical causality which occurs through inheritance in the vertical temporality. The model is derived for one-dimensional signals, but it iseasily generalizable to two-dimensional and three-dimensional ones. The aesthetics of verticality is shown to be significant for music, poetry, architecture and film as well.

Calibrating the parallax view: Understanding the critical moments of Yugoslav post-socialist turn

AB - In this article, we seek to provide a new line of sight referring to specificities of the neoliberal turn in post-socialist societies and corresponding transformations of space. By employing the methodological approach that side-by-side explores two mutually exclusive strategies of analytical and empirical survey, we intend to tackle the question of irreducible antinomies pertinent to architectural research methodologies. Block 23 of the Central Zone of New Belgrade, designed by Branislav Karadžić, Božidar Janković, and Aleksandar Stjepanović (1968), has been widely recognised and aptly studied as one of the highlights of modern urban planning and design, conceived and realised in the period of late socialism in Belgrade (Serbia, former Yugoslavia). Featuring a notion of a “parallax gap,” we presume that the reading of Block 23 through two close yet clearly distinctive perspectives can bring a new scope of knowledge and point to the gap inscribed in the buildings themselves. The first point of view is empirical, centred on the notion of everyday life, and concerns the interpretation and use of space by its inhabitants. The second one is analytical, determined by the work of the architect and architectural theoretician, Branislav Milenković. We start from their point of contact and seek to find a shift in the diverging discursive positions producing a parallax gap. By way of architectural drawing, we explore and theorise new possibilities opened up by the actual buildings: interstitial, intermediary, transitional spaces, and spatial in-betweens. We hope to demonstrate the pursuit of both meticulously planned and dynamically conceived spaces open for the unpredictable was not only a way to respond to specific Yugoslav socio-political realities, but that it fostered the capacity of architecture to accommodate the future population and socio-economic transformations.

abstract = "In this article, we seek to provide a new line of sight referring to specificities of the neoliberal turn in post-socialist societies and corresponding transformations of space. We hope to demonstrate the pursuit of both meticulously planned and dynamically conceived spaces open for the unpredictable was not only a way to respond to specific Yugoslav socio-political realities, but that it fostered the capacity of architecture to accommodate the future population and socio-economic transformations.",

AB - Most of the modernist heritage buildings in New Belgrade are over half a century old. Additionally, there is a growing need for new residential and commercial spaces in the city of Belgrade, and New Belgrade with its incompleteness might integrate them. Digitalisation can play a key role in archiving, maintaining, and developing this part of a city, which underlines the necessity to convert its analogue form into a digital one as soon as possible. But how to efficiently perform that conversion? The parametric approach enables plenty of mutually similar elements to be generated for a short time, based on varying the values of parameters defined, which is especially useful when such elements are heavily repeated. Therefore, this research focuses on the geometric parametrisation of facade panels of various technological manufacturing processes and of diverse types of multifamily residential buildings located in the Central Zone of New Belgrade. It aims to identify key variable-wise characteristics of the facade panel morphology as well as to establish parameters relevant to describing these characteristics. The methodology implies multiple-case studies, where the parameters to be included in the parametrisation-wise algorithm are determined in relation to varying the panel morphology from group to group of mutually identical panels. The goal of the research, on the one hand, is to further develop a methodology implemented so as to become applicable to the study of other similar architectural heritage objects, whereas, on the other hand, it is to discover opportunities for examining the facade panel design from different aspects. Also, the paper contributes to the development of more efficient digitisation based on digital automation as well as to the greater encouragement of the restoration and conservation processes of facade panels. The usage of proposed parameters imposes itself as an efficient way to flexibly describe the morphology of considered facade panels of various technological manufacturing processes, regardless of the building type those panels belong to.

AB - Urban morphological approaches to open space are often overlooked in interdisciplinary studies, particularly due to the complexity of spaces left-over or spontaneously generated. This paper focuses on these under-represented spaces, integrating the pedestrian perspective into the analysis. Belgrade, Serbia, serves as a case study, revealing remnants of open public spaces within the post-socialist context, shaped by historical urban planning principles and recent socio-economic shifts. In this paper, all of these spaces are considered as liminal spaces from a pedestrian perspective, accommodating individual and collective users with various cultural meanings. The aim is to create a potential classification of pedestrian liminal spaces in post-socialist Belgrade. The study employs a theoretical and observational approach, combining quantitative assessments of urban morphological indicators with qualitative analyses using the urban structural unit (USU) approach. By observing the use of space and detecting social dynamics, the study proposes three types of liminal spaces from both morphological and cultural aspects. In comparative analysis between these spaces, morphology and organization imply a possible measure of spatial quality. This work can contribute to a new way of reading and analysing contemporary open public spaces and help in their transformation, especially in a post-socialist context.
