AB - In the period between the proclamation of royal dictatorship and the assassination of King Alexander I, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia was characterised by the dynamics of competing visions of Yugoslavism. Questions concerning the identity of a Yugoslav nation-to-be, in terms of both national unity and diversity of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, were held not only in political discourse, but also through architecture and the visual culture. This article explores the ideological roles of the Bridge of King Alexander I, built between 1929 and 1934 to connect Belgrade with the ex-Habsburg town of Zemun, which carried not only heavy transport but also powerful political messages. The bridge’s construction prompted a widespread public controversy, representing a vivid testimony to rivalries, tensions and discontents between different ideas about the Yugoslav nation, underpinned by both political and professional agendas.

Practicing Dialectical Materialism: The Balkan House and Architecture in Socialist Yugoslavia

AB - This article examines relationships between architecture and ideology in socialist
Yugoslavia by exploring the cultural interpretation and appropriation of the Balkan
house in achieving modern, specifically Yugoslav architectural expression. Through the
contextualization of the period’s different narratives on the Ottoman vernacular and
various architectural designs related to it, the aim is to demonstrate how Yugoslav architects relied on Marxism to appropriate vernacular architecture into the modernist discourses. Dialectical materialism was used as a key for the interpretation of the
opposition between what was seen as the negative and positive elements of the
Balkan house, which challenged banal polarization between the traditional and modern
and led to a more nuanced understanding of backwardness and progress in vernacular
architecture. The idea of architectural metamorphoses of vernacular to modern
forms was justified by evolution and revolution, the basic concepts of the Marxist understanding of processes in society and culture. The Yugoslav interest in the Balkan house
represented a living, perceivable example of how the relationships between tradition and
modernity, the past and the present, as well as men and their environment, became
incorporated into new architecture of ‘socialism with a humane face’, which stood at
the heart of Yugoslav social and political experiment.

AB - The paper focuses on the border towns of the Republic of North Macedonia (RNM), geographically
located in the eastern and western part of the country, highlighting the specificities of their
morphology in the context of their recent development and/or decline. The selected examples belong
to two different planning regions of the RNM: the East region – Delchevo, and the Southwest region -
Struga. Providing an overview of the identified directions and patterns of their urban expansion, it will
be possible to determine the morphological features which have both affected and reflected their
general urban transformations. Currently, the condition of the border towns from the East region
indicates the increasing marginalisation and, consequently - decline, while those from the Southwest
region register progress and growth on the socio-economic and spatial level. Due to these drastic
differences, the paper will provide a comparative analysis of their urban form, simultaneously
targeting both the micro and the macro level. Considering the latest studies on urban morphology and
its relationship with overall urban development, the paper will also address the identified problems
and trends, proposing the planning recommendations for the future transformations and their
sustainability in the long run.

AB - In its jubilee year of 215 years, the University of Belgrade and the Faculty of Architecture as its constituent member had an opportunity to host the 30th International Seminar on Urban Form Conference (ISUF2023). This year’s conference titled Praxis of Urban Morphology presented a great opportunity to discuss the process by which this discipline is enacted, embodied, and realized. The ISUF 2023 organization committee’s endeavor was to build on the previous experience and ideas, and to direct activities toward systematization and synthesis at an international level, aiming to embody these ideas into operational knowledge. The conference was developed in a manner to provide a framework for reflecting on ISUF community intellectual knowledge coming both from the practical and scientific arenas.

The very conference included total of 227 presentations with 580 authors (220 present on site), with representation of participants from 43 countries. The conference was developed in 4 tracks: A. Good in Planning, Landscapes and Townscapes, B. Culture Space, Common Space and Personalities, C. History of Ideas and Challenges and D. Programming and Rethinking Concepts. Conference proceedings were developed in two parts.

AB - The subject of this investigation is two distinct projects in which a common critical method can be identified – recycling. The first project is the ‘Recycling Beauty’ exhibition, designed by Rem Koolhaas/OMA and curated by Salvatore Settis, Anna Anguissola, and Denise La Monica. It represents the third chapter in Fondazione Prada’s comprehensive study on the contemporaneity of ancient art, exploring the paradoxical and delicate relationship between fragments from the past and the cultural diversity of the contemporary world. On the other hand, this research encounters the latest design project arising from the enduring collaboration between Kosmos Architects and Château Chapiteau - the Tin Can Castle, known as the Château Chapiteau Refugee House. This paper primarily aims to investigate the recycling conceptions in two cases thoroughly and, afterwards, by employing the methodology of comparative analysis, examine their shared characteristics, differences, and specificities concerning contemporary architecture discourse.

AB - This research focuses on the position of vernacular architecture in the contemporary context. A particular focus is directed toward analysing the significance of vernacular architecture – its ecological, economic, sociological and cultural aspects. The main research questions relate to the possibilities of using vernacular architecture for establishing sustainable landscape development. The main research problem relates to misunderstanding the complexity of vernacular architecture as a spatial and symbolic phenomenon, as a result of which the study of vernacular architecture is predominantly focused on the ecological and technological aspects of its reuse and energy efficiency. Therefore, the main goals include emphasising vernacular architecture’s cultural and sociological aspects as equally important factors in its identity development. The research is focused on the analysis of documents and concepts in the field of cultural and natural heritage preservation, with the aim to use vernacular architecture for establishing sustainable landscape development. A particular focus is related to the applied principles within the case studies, their evaluation and the possibility of their application in the Republic of Serbia – Negotinske pivnice, as the spatial cultural-historical unit of exceptional importance, which has been on UNESCO’s Tentative World Heritage List since 2010.

Global Village - Utopia or Reality?

AB - The discussion will start debates about the diverse paradigms of suburban, rural, and urban places in today's global society, and it will do so by comparing these three types of locations. The primary point of contention is whether a Global Village should be categorized as an idealistic utopia or a feasible possibility for the foreseeable future. This debate will explore the advantages and disadvantages of each type of location, considering factors such as population density, infrastructure, and access to resources. Additionally, it will delve into the social, economic, and environmental implications of striving towards a Global Village concept. In the conversation that will bridge hierarchical and network viewpoints, we will investigate the idea of needs. Let's investigate some alternative ways of living to the one we are now accustomed to, on the presumption that we ought to consider the requirements that have been produced. These alternative ways of living may include sustainable communities, eco-villages, and self-sufficient neighborhoods. By considering the requirements that have been produced, we can explore how these alternative living arrangements can address issues such as energy consumption, mobility, built environment, waste management, and food production more efficiently and environmentally friendly. Furthermore, examining the social and economic implications of these alternative ways of living can shed light on the potential benefits and challenges they may bring to individuals and society as a whole. The core beliefs and identities held by people all over the world help to foster the growth of a diversified socio-economic and cultural network that spans a variety of geographic regions. This network serves as the basis for a worldwide community that is referred to as the Global Village. Within the context of our increasingly interdependent global community, this idea stands as a singular example of new communalism. As a result, Global Village would like to draw your attention to the following topics, most of which are also being explored in the thematic sessions of the conference:
1.ARCHITECTURE OF GLOBAL VILLAGE: PATTERNS, FORMS, SYSTEMS
2.PLANNING AND ARRANGING THE GLOBAL VILLAGE: INSTRUMENTS AND MODELS
3.MODERN TECHNOLOGIES IN RISK MANAGEMENT OF TERRITORIES
4.FORMS OF MOVEMENT AND MOBILITY MANAGEMENT IN THE GLOBAL VILLAGE
5.THE ROLE OF URBAN PLANNERS IN MANAGING THE CLIMATE TRANSITION
6.NEW MODELS OF ARCHITECTURE IN TRANSITION
7.RESILIENT CITIES IN THE ERA OF GLOBALIZATION: URBAN INTERVENTIONS TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE
8.HEALTHY city HEALTHY people: designing future cities for "mind body and soul"
9.RESEARCH IN THE FIELD OF ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGIES - IDEAS AND POSSIBILITIES

9.RESEARCH IN THE FIELD OF ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGIES - IDEAS AND POSSIBILITIES",

within processes that require a choice between several alternatives, and are based on the
comparison of various aspects of potential solutions, among which it is possible to
establish a hierarchy. A certain number of such models are also applied in the field of
architecture, and they are intended, among other things, to evaluate the potential of
buildings for various types of adaptations or to select an adequate intervention in
relation to the current state and characteristics of the observed object and its location.
The paper represents the historical development of models for decision-making and the
influence on the creating of contemporary multi-criteria models, the application of
experiences from other fields, grouping according to certain criteria and the shaping of
elements of multi-criteria models throughout history.

AB - The paper offers a theoretical basis for understanding the design methodology of the Villa Pavlović project (by the Belgrade-based architecture studio NEO arhitekti). The theoretical analysis of the design process focuses on the issue of form. The initial idea to build a 50-meter swim lane in the basement gave the house an elongated form, but was ultimately not realised. The moment the form lost its main function, its finitude became a problem that had to be overcome for the design process to continue. By reflecting on the theoretical problems of teleology and time, the text indirectly explains the applied methodology for the destabilisation of the created form. In that sense, a metaphor of dissolution of gold describes the design process, potentially understood as opposite to morphogenesis.

Philosophy “/” Architecture: Against l’informe

AB - From the linguistic aspect, “/” does not represent the concept for “both.” Instead, it refers to the field of alternatives between “two;” therefore, it excludes absolute conjunction. Concerning the process of design of the architectural object, I will try to explain the successive morphogeneses of the architectural form and the formless through which we generate a specific resistance of architecture to philosophy and vice versa. The architectural object is immanent to the formless in order to stop time, that is, its own finitude (end). Thus, the formless refers to what negates form as the principle of stable order and harmonious continuity and opposes form in its material becoming. This opposition to the own materialization of the object represents a metaphor for the desire for aesthetics that includes a non-representational (philosophical) dimension. The formless introduces a conceptual dimension to architecture, which is why I associate formless with the process of the creation of an object at the same time as its disappearance. In addition, according to Didi-Huberman, formlessness is not a rejection of form but precisely the possibility of reaching figuration. When the form dissolves into the formless and the formless changes into the form, the architectural concept becomes “burdened” by its own negativity, the desire for a non-substantial dynamic l’informe, and also the desire for figures that contain something non-imaginable. In this regard, l’informe methodologically belongs to philosophy because it deconstructs the materiality of the architectural object. However, paradoxically, it can also serve as a design of architectural figures. These states of the impossibility of absolute conjunction of philosophy and architecture create contingencies for new architectural concepts.

AB - An integrated building design requires the intensive early collaboration of architects with other disciplines in order to respond to sustainability requirements. Therefore, the education of architects should enable acquiring knowledge and skills essential to function effectively in an interdisciplinary team in practice. Integrating theoretical and practical knowledge within the course curriculum is one way to accomplish the above. Lecture-based courses in structural design within the Undergraduate Studies of Architecture at the University of Belgrade combine theoretical and practical knowledge within the traditional learning model by applying theoretical knowledge to individual non-contextual problem-solving. In the final year of the study, structural design learning is based on contextual problem-solving in teams in the studio, within which buildings and their structures are designed following sustainability requirements. This paper aims to present the applied approach of a combination of two models of learning, individual non-contextual and team contextual, and to assess, using surveys, the influence of applied learning method on the development of cognitive abilities, knowledge, skills, and motivation of architecture students, focusing the contribution of early project-based learning. A total of 230 final-year undergraduate architecture students participated in the survey. The analysis of the survey showed that the applied approach of early team contextual learning in the field of structural design contributes to the development of critical and creative thinking, understanding of the meaning of the subject matter, development of research and analysis, organizational, communication, independent learning and teamwork skills, and motivation to the acquisition of new knowledge and self-engagement. The above indicates the need for constant improvement of the architectural education methodologies and processes to respond to growing complex requirements in practice oriented towards sustainability.
