This is a pioneering survey of residential architecture in Belgrade of the 19th and early 20th century, a period of key importance for the evolvement of modern Serbian architecture and society. Being based on a wide spectrum of interpretative tools and theoretically highly self conscious, the book represents a precious source not only for exploration of various aspects of architectural culture in the 19th- and fin-de-siècle Serbia and its capital, but also for any relevant research of Serbian cultural identity over the course of the most significant time of the emerging country’s modernization. The book evidences how different ways to modernization, burdened with complexity of contradictions and ideological instability, were reflected on Belgrade architecture in general and residential buildings in particular.
