Urbanism is a field where art overlaps with technology and the social and natural sciences. The artistic element in urbanism is particularly prominent in urban design, which emphasizes the significance of aesthetics in the shaping of space. The examples of artistically-shaped open public spaces are exceptionally important, because shaping them requires from artistic expression to be socially responsible, as well as to responds by its character to the needs of the community that uses it and for which it is part of a local identity. The course “Morphology of City Paths” at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Belgrade is designed to elevate the link between urbanism and other arts to a higher level. The starting point in research at the subject is the works of fine arts, drama, music or applied arts. Students analyse postulates of selected works of art and transform them into an urban space in the form of a small urban design project – a square, park, yard or quay. A special highlight in this process is to connect the elements of the given work with the selected space, through the “translation” of the elements of the work of art into a new functional and physical framework. The aim of this paper is to critically explain the process of work on the subject of the “Morphology of City Paths” as a case study, by presenting research and the best student works as an outcome. Before that, the motive for introducing this subject will be explained through a brief theoretical discussion of the connection between urbanism and other branches of the arts. Combining a theoretical approach with a case study is the basis for concluding considerations about the quality of urban-design solutions obtained and the possibilities of improving teaching.en
