Ecological aspects of steel usage in contemporary building industry

Abstract
Contemporary engineering uses steel and its alloys in every domain. Constant augmentation of needs for steel in global scope causes aggrandizement of types of products on the free market, thus increasing its global production. Due to depletion of natural resources, increase of economical price of energy and vital need for cutting global pollution of The Planet, steel industry of the developed countries focused its efforts in constant improvements of its’ own technologies in order to achieve maximum energy efficiency and environmentally friendly solutions. In these countries, recycling process is dominant in comparison with traditional ore extracting production of iron and steel while steel products trade reaches global level, with obvious trend to grow. Meanwhile, Serbia (as a country in transition) tend to keep up with this ongoing global progress, despite numerous economical, technological and environmental problems and poor results in energy efficiency and recycling. This paper focu...ses on: steel - as the most significant and the most used ferrous alloy in contemporary building industry; steel-related industries and their environmental impact, both on global scope and Serbian level.

Savremeno graditeljstvo se ne može zamisliti bez upotrebe čelika i njegovih legura u praktično svim svojim segmentima. Konstantno narastajuća potražnja za čelikom na globalnom nivou utiče na povećanje ponude najrazličitijih oblika njegove primene, i posledično, na povećanje produkcije istog. Iscrpivost prirodnih resursa, povećanje ekonomske cene energije i potreba da se smanji globalno zagađenje planete Zemlje, navelo je i industriju čelika razvijenih zemalja da konstantno unapređuje sopstvene tehnološke procese ka onim energetski efikasnijim i ekološki prihvatljivijim. Na datim prostorima upotreba prirodnih sirovina za proizvodnju čelika uveliko ustupa mesto reciklaži metalnog otpada, dok istovremeno trgovina čelikom i čeličnim proizvodima dostiže planetarne razmere, sa tendencijom rasta. Sa druge strane, u pomenutim okvirima, Srbija, kao zemlja u tranziciji, nastoji da uhvati korak sa aktuelnim trendovima, ali uz brojne poteškoće koje se tiču obimnije i efikasnije, energetski raciona...lne proizvodnje, racionalnijeg korišćenja metalnog otpada i drugih adekvatnih mera za očuvanje životne sredine. Ovim radom se na primeru čelika, kao najznačajnije i najčešće primenjivane vrste metala u građevinarstvu, uporedno analiziraju pomenuti aspekti na globalnom nivou, odnosno, na nivou Srbije.
