The Box Packing – A Mathematical Concept Interpreted Architecturally
Апстракт
In this study we examine a methodology of integrating selected mathematical concepts in architectural design. The studied case is based on the Box Packing concept, published as a demonstration within the Wolfram Demonstration Projects. Mathematically speaking, it is an example of a puzzle problem, within which a set of 27 identical cubic elements, changing their proportions, form a cubical body. The demonstration has been transposed into a powerful Grasshopper definition (visual algorithm editor compatible with the Rhino modelling platform), suitable for use by architecture students, as an example of parametric modelling. The architectural potential of the concept has been examined within an elective course titled Generic explorations 06 in the autumn semester 2010/11 at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Architecture. This initial examination resulted in a series of small scale objects realized in Corian material, in collaboration with the firm DuPont (Serbia). After this initial ...examination of the concept, it is integrated in the 3D Visual communications course offered to a group of first year students, within which a series of objects have been created, modelled, materialized, interpreted architecturally and multiplied (varying parametrically), forming an urban complex.
