This chapter discusses elements of sustainability related to the use of building materials in traditional houses in Serbia. After discussing the history and the socio-cultural context that contributed to the traditional architecture, the chapter further reviews basic types of rural and urban houses and typical structures and building materials that were used in their construction. Finally, the chapter traces and discusses the environmental features of building materials and structures.
