Human settlement is a place where people live. It refers to the totality of human community with all the social, material, organizational, spiritual and cultural elements that sustain it. A great variety of settlements exists worldwide, reflecting human needs, abilities and aspirations, as well as social, political and economic relations. Through the ongoing process of urbanisation, the world is steadily becoming more “urban” and less “rural”. Two main challenges that contemporary world is facing today are massive urbanisation and climate change. They are connected in the way that how we plan, produce and consume energy in our cities will have a crucial role in our quest to reverse climate change and its impact, and to provide decent life and homes for people.
