Abstract

The European Patent Office (EPO) examines European patent applications, enabling inventors, researchers and companies from around the world to obtain protection for their inventions in up to 44 countries through a centralised and uniform procedure that requires just one application. From 16 signatory states of the European Patent Convention in 1973 - the ground- breaking international treaty that led to the creation of the European Patent Office, the Organisation has now grown to 38 member states, including all 27 EU member states plus countries such as Norway, Switzerland and Turkey. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the signing of its convention, the European patent Office is running a jury competition for commissioning a paper-based artwork under the theme “Paper Transformation”. The aim is to create an artwork made out of EPO paper files, which have in the past years become obsolete in view of the Office’s digital change. The artwork will be part of the EPO’s permanent art collection and will represent the EPO’s legacy and the hereafter by bridging the past with the future, by celebrating innovations and their inventors, the applicants and their attorneys, the staff and their commitment.
