AB - Pedestrian behaviour is defined by a significant number of factors, but the readability of space is one of the key prerequisites for observation and all other pedestrian activities. The focus of the paper is on the relation between legibility and readability. By analogy space with the written text, legibility is focused on small parts and signs, while readability is based on the whole and on associations, that are emerging in our minds with possible common space usage scenarios. This paper tries to divide which urban elements affect legibility, and which one on readability for pedestrians to help transform networks in neighbourhoods between transport planning and pedestrian behaviour. Interesting areas for analysis are overlaps of pedestrian and road traffic. So, the study area is mega blocks in New Belgrade - block 23 and block 30, especially the parts of the pedestrian network. This approach starts by identifying key elements of legibility and readability and analysing how the road traffic affects the pedestrian network and supported activities in mega blocks. The methodology consists of forming evaluation criteria based on literature review and examining it in the study area through behavioural observations. After the assessment and analysis are done, the results as the elements in two groups of perception data can contribute to guidelines for redesigning the space in the function of pedestrian movement.

AB - Urban morphological approaches to open space are often overlooked in interdisciplinary studies, particularly due to the complexity of spaces left-over or spontaneously generated. This paper focuses on these under-represented spaces, integrating the pedestrian perspective into the analysis. Belgrade, Serbia, serves as a case study, revealing remnants of open public spaces within the post-socialist context, shaped by historical urban planning principles and recent socio-economic shifts. In this paper, all of these spaces are considered as liminal spaces from a pedestrian perspective, accommodating individual and collective users with various cultural meanings. The aim is to create a potential classification of pedestrian liminal spaces in post-socialist Belgrade. The study employs a theoretical and observational approach, combining quantitative assessments of urban morphological indicators with qualitative analyses using the urban structural unit (USU) approach. By observing the use of space and detecting social dynamics, the study proposes three types of liminal spaces from both morphological and cultural aspects. In comparative analysis between these spaces, morphology and organization imply a possible measure of spatial quality. This work can contribute to a new way of reading and analysing contemporary open public spaces and help in their transformation, especially in a post-socialist context.

Aesthetics of Transport Infrastructure Space as Landscape Between Flows and Cultures of Movement

AB - The contemporary city consists of a series of vital systems in which different
flows are present – movements, traffic, forms, thoughts, experiences,
and others. The traffic systems that occupy a large area of the
city and are important for its further development stand out.
The focus of the paper is on the landscape of transport space between
new modes of transport and different flows in the contemporary city
on the one hand and the culture of movement and meaning brought
by transport users on the other. Sensitivity as a measure in aesthetic
reading helps us to understand infrastructure as an integrated part of
the landscape, and not as isolated from it. The subject of the paper is
landscapes of experience from two perspectives of observation, i.e.,
two speeds of movement: vehicles and pedestrians–visual and sound
landscape. This paper aims to define the elements of user experience
in the space of transport, between aesthetics and humanity.
The study area is the space of Highway E75 in the old part of Belgrade,
especially loops (punctures) in connection with the rest of the
city–parts named Autokomanda and Mostarska petlja. The focus of
the paper is the avant-garde observation of infrastructures like Bergson’s
metaphysics, which contributes to the metaphysical framework
of transport infrastructure and the definition of the relative and the
absolute in a flow. Also, there are Bosanquet’s aesthetic approaches
that help define a new pattern of experience in the aesthetics of
transport. Two films of German Expressionism from the Weimar period,
“Metropolis” and “Golem”, help to consider social conditions and
factors in the space of transport.
There is a question of considering space as landscape and also landscape
as a space. When space is landscape, we can consider space
in the aesthetics of architecture, sculpture, and urbanism, trying to
define space-volume and space-direction. The paper contributes
to a new way of perceiving the space of transport outside its economic
role in the neoliberal world, where speed and connection in
the exchange of goods, services, and people are extremely important,
seeking the aesthetics and humanity of such a space.

Mapping the Elements of the Compact City in a Post-Socialist Neighbourhood: The Case of New Belgrade

AB - New Belgrade was planned as an automobile-dependent city with a block structure. After the drastic changes it had been exposed to, the block structure remained untouched but with new usages, pedestrian activities, and routes as a final product. These changes are sporadic and scattered, but together there is a system of elements of a compact city making pedestrian-friendly environments. In this paper, based on a conceptual approach, these elements will be mapped in New Belgrade super-block 30, one of the mainly unchanged super-blocks. There are examples of small urban design interventions, such as new park areas, paths, and ramps. It is making the inclusion of different groups of users – from the youngest to oldest ones or recreationists and wheelchair users. Historically, some parts of super-block 30 have been left unfinished in its construction and had formed empty spaces. From undefined large areas to equipped zones dedicated to specific users, these changes created a new perception of communal public spaces by residents in super-block. An aim is to define how inclusive territory is formed. In which way do these changes contribute to making a new identity for this part of the city? They have new gathering places for activities and a new way of belonging to that super-block, at the same time creating new reasons to stay and influence the community in the super-block. In that sense, there was conducted unobstructed observation and semi-structured interviews with residents to examine if new interventions helped the community, their perception, and usage. Connections between these new pockets contribute to making new pedestrian routes as a part of the walking system through the New Belgrade block structure. Planning further development of these activities and routes can help in the transformation of post-socialist block structure neighbourhoods to compact cities and more inclusive and pedestrian-friendly environments.

AB - Most of the urban studies define reurbanisation as a distinctive qualitative change in local population structures, particularly in the inner neighbourhoods of cities (Haase et al, 2003), urban renewal (Bernt, 2009) or middle-class housing change and gentrification (Bridge, 2006). In the post-socialist countries, reurbanisation is very much expressed as a suburbanisation (Ouředníček & Šimon, 2015), while the process of deconcentration and decentralisation is clearly generated by the political, economic and societal changes occurred after 1990 (Stan, 2015).

AB - Border cities are particularly susceptible to urban shrinkage. The EU territorial documents consider borderland cities and regions as more vulnerable ones (EC, 1999). The border effect manifests itself in a two-fold manner, on the one hand, cities can be affected by accessibility issues, having few connections to their own country or be under the pull of larger nearby cities. On the other hand, they might experience an economic boom due to the border proximity, but once the connection is disrupted the effects are acute.

AB - Publicness can be considered as a way of experiencing the contemporary city. In creating
publicness, we often focus just on places. There is ambiguity about publicness in transport
infrastructure point as place or non-place. In that space, groups of individuals are formed, all set
on the goal of reaching a destination. That groups can be named momentary communities. This
paper sets out to examine how momentary communities have formed, their needs and aspects
of usage, and how they have brought publicness as a lived experience.
The study area is Mostar Interchange - an important transport point of Belgrade that connects
the city and highway system. It is an intersection point of civic and transport infrastructure. At
the same time, interchange connects and separates the city. Historically, by its forming, it erased
this part of the city and made the radical cut in the urban tissue. Today, the important parts of
the development of the city are urban tissue toward the center, as well as the riverfront, while
the transport part remains neglected and witnesses radical urban changes in its environment.
Therefore, this space can be considered as a liminal space that has potential.
The purpose of this paper is to open the questions and reconsider possibilities of inquiries values
of liminal spaces treatment, especially in the context of planning practice. In that sense, the focus
of methodology is on literature review, historic research, and walking interview as input data
and observations as mapping (urban reading) through different frameworks, and also testing
that combined approach in the pedestrian hub of Mostar Interchange as a case study of liminal
space. The results should show that although interchange is a liminal space, it has its hidden
values in the daily mobility patterns of users that reveal the life of a pedestrian hub with its rules
and problems. It is necessary to work on new pedestrian mobility in the development of this
space in the city which will include neglected needs of momentary communities.

Analysis of liminal space - from a sense of safety to a new identity

AB - The research connects liminal spaces and pedestrian experience with a safety theory, in the domain of urban studies. Important topics for this research are based walking, safety, perception, and transport. Walking is becoming an important aspect of an individual's everyday life in terms of public health, economic, environmental, and other benefits. The factors that define a space as walkable are not limited to the physical dimensions of a place but also include perception. For safety, the terms of legibility and readability are important as one of the key prerequisites for observation and all other pedestrian activities. Previous walkability research is focused on neighborhoods or shopping and business districts, but not on liminal spaces. Regarding the aim, there are interesting urban phenomena in the contemporary city which define the occasion of this research. The transport infrastructure can radically divide urban tissue, where, in the history of roads, we haven't found a solution for improving the space of the city highway. Furthermore, post-socialist cities in transformation characterize some crucial changes in urban patterns and urban impacts.
The assumptions are various and multidisciplinary. The first one is focused on post-socialist neighborhoods and their usage especially on mikrorayons in today’s post-social city where the neighborhood of opportunity is considered an imaginary territory that represents a transformed neighborhood unit where the user can satisfy all of his needs by walking. The second one is based on analogy space with the written text, where legibility is focused on small parts and signs, while readability is based on the whole and on associations, that are emerging in our minds with possible common space usage scenarios. And last ones are based on historical and psychological aspects – Belgrade was part of two unfinished modernizations in the XX century and as such it provides new opportunities for transformations according to new types of active transport such as walking and cycling; human faces of passers-by as stimuli from the environment, fill the working memory of the pedestrian user and affect his orientation in space.
The study area is liminal spaces in Belgrade, especially the spaces of traffic hubs of the city highway, such as Mostar Interchange and unsafe parts of New Belgrade mega blocks. The liminal spaces are multidimensionally analyzed using different methods such as ergonomic and spatial analysis, behavioral observations, space syntax, mappings, walking interviews, and elements of psychological and historical research. The focus will be on comparisons and finding out connections and differences between liminal spaces as a part of various places – transport hubs in transport spaces, passages as points of pedestrian network in different types of neighborhoods, and other places. The research aims to find out urban patterns in liminal spaces, as well as elements that can improve the readability and security of that space, focusing on new pedestrian mobility.
The results should show that elements of transformation can be defined by redefining the relationship between spatial planning, urban design, a sense of security, as well as the identity, and historical character of space.

AB - U teorijskim razmatranjima i urbanom dizajnu, bezbednost je preduslov za životnost i intenzivno
korišćenje otvorenog javnog prostora. Težište ovog rada predstavlja bezbednost sa
aspekta korisnika prostora odnosno osećaj lične bezbednosti. Koncept prevencije kriminala
i intervjua i obradi prikupljenih podataka u cilju stručne opservacije i analize postojećeg
stanja.
2013. godine do danas.
svesti o aspektima značaja otvorenog javnog prostora i njegove bezbednosti.

AB - The focus of the research is informal change in the post-social mass housing. Informal change refers to usage of space or need, activity and movement of pedestrians, their intentions and walking targets. Walking becomes an important aspect of an individual’s life as a mode of transportation or leisure activity. The study area is mega blocks on New Belgrade - block 23 and block 30. There is a question, is the movement of users limited to the intra-block or inter-block, or wider zones of this part of the city.
This paper aims to define the edge of the neighborhood of opportunity and urban patterns in a post socialist New Belgrade, by mapping informal changes focusing on walking routes and destinations and measuring walking distances. The presence of walking routes show that it is comfort space with elements of healthy urbanism, also new lifestyle and dynamics of using mega-blocks. To answer these questions, there will be used different methods: walking interview - experimental qualitative and quantitative method, online survey, unobtrusive observation and visual materials. The research reveals how informal changes as walking can be heritage in the community or because of a wide range of factors, absolute individual preference.

AB - The focus of work is on transport infrastructure systems in the city zone, such as highways, loops, intermodal hubs, especially from the socialist period. It usually doesn’t have a defined significance, as well as the treatment of heritage, and at the same time it occupy large areas of the city and it is important for its further development. There are its transformations and roles in creating the everyday life of a city - its divisions, mobility and social cohesion or the formation of a landscape of exclusively economic value. An example of such a system in our country is the city highway E75 in the old part of Belgrade, especially parts of the city named Mostarska petlja and Autokomanda. The paper considers the redefinition of the highway space in the urban fabric due to the relocation of traffic outside the city, observing it between the landscape and the cultural heritage. As a factor of the urban landscape, this type of infrastructure will change its function in the context of strategies for the future development of the city, especially in the conditions of the changed categorization of highway. The question of the identity of space today, as well as the cultural and historical layers that this infrastructure has erased, is becoming topical. With a theoretical approach and historical research of the urban space of the E75 highway from the period of its planning and construction until today, the paper tries to define a better understanding of such a system, especially in the context of aesthetic practices that affect the urban landscape. The question of limiting the intervention on the infrastructure systems themselves, as well as in the zone next to them, in the new redefined system and space, remains open.

AB - Smederevo has great potential for development - cultural, historical, industrial and natural heritage. In this sense, as a generator for the maximal utilization of all potentials, information and communication technologies (ICT) have been applied in certain places - "points" in the urban structure of the city. On the points. ICT equipment can be used to view the elements of virtual and augmented reality - wildlife and history of the Danube, the Smederevo Fortress in the Middle Ages. Smederevo in the future with new elements of infrastructure and robotics (cyberpunk). etc. The application of ICT has also been achieved in urban design - elevated footpaths for a new view of the city and fortress with digital equipment redevelopment of railway wagons and new materialization of thermochromic pigment paving stones and furniture that changes color under the
influence of many WIFl users or their moods. At the end, ICT tools are a base for the comprehensive urban regeneration of the central part of Smederevo Riverfront.

AB - The Thirst App should offer medical (reminder and control of daily drinking water), cultural and historical aspects (city-level tourist routes, as well as information on historical sites). The routes are named according to the parts of the city it passes. The analysis shows that the drinking fountains are missing in the new part as well as in the central parts of Belgrade. Therefore, a new network of drinking fountains has been made to form a part of a mobile urban furniture in public space - with a large number of users of this application, a drinking fountain emerges from the color-changing tile that supplies new users with filtered water of rainwater or snow.
