AB - There is a rising concern in the architectural academic and professional community about the current transformation of cities and public spaces, seeking for (a) new and innovative approaches to planning and shaping future cities and habitats, and (b) a platform for experimentation and designing of innovative solutions to complex societal problems through co-creation. The paper aims to highlight the regenerative role that educational projects with a practical dimension could have on the public space and the community. The Europe Readr pavilion in Serbia has been developed in the cooperation of the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Belgrade and the Laboratory for urban morphology and typology (Morpho- Lab) of the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Architecture within the broader international project EUROPE READR. Guided by European values, sustainability, and the European Green Deal through designing public spaces for the exchange of ideas and values, UBFA considered both the process of learning - and the result itself. Accordingly, the process implied multiple phases of project development that included two-stage student competition, three mentored workshops and presentations to project partners, and finally, implementation phase. The paper brings significant experiences regarding potentials and challenges in innovation, critical thinking, competence, co-creation, developing technical drawings, understanding of building and assembling techniques, public purchase regulations, and on-site activities. The project provided stepping out from academia bringing a positive change both to education and public space.

AB - The relevance of this research topic is a reflection of a need to redefine the concept of nature in
architecture and urbanism so as to acknowledge the current environmental and climate issues and the changing position of nature in contemporary culture. Today, the built environment puts very strong pressure on the natural environment, causing climate change and degradation of ecosystems to evolve as a consequence of such tendencies. Keeping in mind that architecture and urbanism produce the
environment for humans and at the same time study the relationship between people and their
environment, both built and natural, we will argue that architectural and urban design are at the very core of the problem between humans, the natural and built environment, and the changes that occur in these relations. Furthermore, recent decades have seen a constant emphasis on the importance of nature, especially natural elements and principles, within design in order to achieve environmental and cultural sustainability, i.e., harmony between architecture, nature and users. However, the practice of application of these methods and knowledge in architecture still hasn’t been developed. The focus of this paper is the implementation of nature-based solutions in the built environment, particularly from the aspects of improving resilience, well-being and landscape valorization. This paper deals with the identification of the key potentials and a range of benefits of ecosystem services, but also of the crucial barriers and limitations impeding the implementation of this concept in contemporary cities.

AB - This paper considers urban gardens as lived spaces which have an important role in reconnecting with nature in an urban environment, but also as an archive of concepts related to culture and everyday life. In this context, the paper studies the character of three of Belgrade's urban gardens and their contribution to the quality of everyday life in the large-scale socialist residential settlements built during the 1970s. Focus is placed on establishing relations between the dwelling culture, social and cultural needs and changes, and the dominant architectural and planning paradigms of modernism and post-modernism. Belgrade's urban gardens were created and developed spontaneously (most often non-legally) as self-organized citizens' acts. Research presented in our case studies confirms the paper's initial assumption that the urban gardens in Belgrade are still considered marginal and certainly not representative urban practices, overshadowed by the planned urban conceptions and sociopolitical actions. In this sense, we may notice the lack of a systematic approach to managing these gardens, and complete absence of legislation either provided by authorities, private or public bodies or even associations. Although the urban gardens emerged in socialism outside of any rules and regulations, they promoted the values of an active relationship between the user, dwelling culture and immediate residential surroundings, and contributed to improving the dwelling culture of the "new working class" in the socialist dwelling units. Also, the gardens were not only a place for producing food in financially difficult times, especially during the post-socialist transition of the 1990s, but above all a place associated with socialization and a "sense of home". Recognizing the benefits of urban gardens and accordingly raising awareness about this concept in the city, together with the adoption of appropriate regulations, would certainly be of immense relevance to urban gardening and generally landscape quality in Serbia.

AB - As a starting point this paper questions the actualization of the concept of the atmosphere in contemporary architectural and artistic research both in theory and in practice. The concept of the atmosphere points to the possibility that the architectural and artistic practices directly operationalize their interests in the problems of everyday life and everyday culture. Architectural and artistic atmosphere are realized in the ratio 1:1, thus surpassing conditions typical for both discipline separately. Usefulness of the scale of 1:1 is the potential for interdiscursive exchange because it includes the experience of the physical body in space and represents a medium through which the social reality is engraved into the space. We propose that the production of the atmosphere could be a mechanism to imprint everyday life into architectural and artistic forms through real-size-multimediaworks.

An Environmental Critique: Impact of Socialist Ideology on the Ecological and Cultural Sensitivity of Belgrade's Large-Scale Residential Settlements

AB - This paper advocates the stance that sustainable approaches in architecture, although usually associated to contemporary practice, have a very complex relationship with the history of architecture and urbanism. By adopting an interpretative framework, the paper highlights the environmental aspects of the architectural practice of Belgrade's large-scale residential settlements created under the cultural influences of socialist ideology. The socialist system enabled systematic implementation of the principles of the Congres International d'Architecture Moderne (CIAM) on a large urban scale, in contrast to capitalist countries where these principles were applied on a smaller scale. The paper starts with the premise that these cultural influences, together with the integration of the principles of modernism, caused the rejection and the loss of traditional and ambience values in architecture. Research has shown that these values play a very important role in meeting the needs of ecological and cultural sensitivity in architecture. In its final consequences, the results of research have revealed that, although widely criticized for its break with tradition and the loss of ambience values, residential architecture in Belgrade during the socialist era included significant aspirations of the architectural practice directed at the improvement of aspects of sustainability, and especially aspects of ecological and cultural sensitivity.

AB - From a theoretical standpoint, this is an interdisciplinary doctoral thesis, combining contemporary design practices with their phenomenological interpretation using the notion of atmosphere of a space. The theme of the dissertation is a definition of the concept of architectural atmosphere, its theoretical interpretation through research of environmental art practice and its analysis through the study of everyday spaces in the designs of architect Vasilije Milunović. The main research objective is to establish a practical relationship between the practices of environmental art and architectural design, in order to open architectural design practice towards critical and research potentials of interdisciplinary and hybrid practices in artistic creation. The usefulness of the established relations is reflected in the possibility of interdisciplinary exchange of research tactics and techniques, as well as through the possibility of improvement of design practice through broadening of the area and of the media of research and work. The operational goal of the research, in terms of architectural work, is to point out the usefulness of studying a wide range of human behavior in everyday life, from what is known as performing the everyday, through rituals and routines, to forms of performance. The assumption is that architecture is considered a structural system of symbols in complex communicational and phenomenological constructs, as well as a multimedia textual phenomenon, which takes place in time intervals of constituting the individual and collective everyday. The general methodological theoretical position of this research is predominantly phenomenological (hermeneutic and interpretative), through which the research is conducted as qualitative interpretative research. Qualitative research assumes the involvement of researchers in the problem and the subject of research. In this case, the relevant position is the dual role of the author: as chronicler and actors of the event, which is a specific role and thus appropriate for qualitative research. The first part of the study sets a theoretical framework, followed by an analysis of the relevant concepts of architectural theory, the theory of environmental art and theory of everyday life. The final chapter of the theoretical study outlines the implications for the possibility of analyzing the ambiance of the quotidian. The second part of the thesis is conceived as qualitative research, consisting of four case studies in which previously proposed hypotheses are tested in real conditions. The concluding paragraphs are an overview of the research results obtained...
Претпоставка је да се архитектура сагледава као структура система знакова у сложеним комуникацијским и феноменолошким конструктима, као вишемедијска текстуална појавност која се одиграва у временским интервалима конституисања индивидуалне и колективне свакодневице. abstract = "From a theoretical standpoint, this is an interdisciplinary doctoral thesis, combining contemporary design practices with their phenomenological interpretation using the notion of atmosphere of a space. The concluding paragraphs are an overview of the research results obtained..., AB - The paper explores the ideological influences in the period of the socialist system on the new urban landscape, and also on design of the typological models of residential units built in Belgrade. After the Second World War, one of the main policy goals of socialism was to solve the housing problems of Belgrade, by building the modern, serially manufactured and economical housing architecture. The period of intensive construction of housing architecture of Belgrade in the period of socialist self-management is primarily related to the achieved quality of housing in this period in terms of environment humanization and functional organization of housing units. This paper explores new concepts and principles of housing architecture with the emphasis on the impact of spatial-functional apartment transformation on the family lifestyle and the formation of a new socialist culture of dwelling. Since the problem of housing is interdisciplinary, the transformation is studied out through detecting the relations of cause and effect among ideological social changes, culture of habitation, technical and technological criteria and functional-spatial house structure. The modern housing urbanism and architecture has become a representation of social, political, economic, demographic and cultural changes of the period.

AB - This paper presents a concept and examples of contemporary subsidized housing, analyzing similarities and differences between the housing models in the world and in Serbia. Contemporary housing policy requires new ways and mechanisms of the use of subsidized housing units, which has resulted in the need to consider innovative concepts, aiming at redefinition of existing concepts and creation of adequate offer for a great number of groups of diverse users. Housing model is considered as a process, political mechanism through which a certain group of population obtains ownership over their flats, while a concept of the residential building is considered as being an important segment of this process directly dependent on the model itself. The factors directly affecting design of such buildings are analyzed; a new attitude towards potential beneficiaries and their needs, financial possibilities, social status and the way in which flats are used, is established. It is emphasized that research and experiment in architectural design enable defining of the new housing concepts, supported by technological solutions, sustainable development and growing awareness on housing problems, on the other hand.
